Default Audie Murphy

Hopefully the attached clipping from Stars and Stripes is readable for you all. My father sent it to me as part of his genealogy research hobby and family history story writing. If you can't read it, it is a short article about Audie Murphy's Platoon Sargent in North Africa and Sicily. He was the one who put in Murphy's first award recommendation (silver star). The amazing thing is this man is my great uncle! (grandmother's younger brother). The really amazing thing is my father has had this info for years and just this evening thought to share it with me, and my uncle Lawrence and I are the only career Military in the family tree.

I cant add much but-there is a man here who owned (s) a Barber shop here in town that was in Audie Murphy's Platoon. I never got what this man's name was. Not sure if he is still living or not?

Lawrence Bullinger was kind of a mystery man even in my dad's family. He joined the Army in '39 to get off the family farm, discharged after WWII, stayed with his sister's family when he got home. My dad's only recollection of him at that time was having to give up his half of the bed he shared with his brother. Last time my dad saw him was in '48 when he and his dad took Lawrence to the train to Chicago where Lawrence was going to re-enlist back into the Army. Ten years later, by pure coincidence, my dad ran into uncle Lawrence at a PX in Germany in '58 and learned he had also served in Korea received his second Purple Heart and the Silver Star.

These guys were our heroes when we were kids and we need to keep relating these stories to everyone that will listen, especially the kids. You know darn well they won't learn any of this in the schools these days.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^Which is partly why-every so often-that I repost a great photo of Audie--as a Captain at the Alamo. He was there to promote and attend the world premier of his auto-bio: To Hell and Back. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

It's a press photo-but it didnt have much of a caption-so I was unsure why he was there-but figured it was for something as important as visiting the Alamo. By chance--as i was researching something unrelated, I came across
some other photos taken on that same day/visit-that had their info fully describing the event. The press photo, was the first one taken of Audie at this event when he was leaving the Alamo chapel. The other photos shd him walking a short distance and up to a table with a large Alamo-shaped cake--and one or two photos shows him cutting and dealing out the slices of cake.

Anyway--killing two birds with one stone on this. 1) emembering heros like Audie- 2) as well as our dead from that fight. Makes you think of both.....

Being from Tennessee I wonder what percentage of our state knows who Alvin York is? Fifty years ago it would probably be well over 75%. It's probably less than 10% now. It's a shame.

They also don't care. As my great uncle would say. It's a shame, a scandal and a disgrace. Larry

He was a Major then, not a Capt. That was his final rank.

No-when the photos were taken--he was a Captain. On his uniform are the raidroad tracks of a Captain's rank-not gold oak leaf for Major. The photos clearly showed his railroad tracks..

Sadly, most millenialls will never know of Audie Murphy. They will know of Kim Kardashian and the other brainless people.

That would be your Alvin C. York from Pall Mall, up near Jimtown by the three forks of the Wolf.
