Insurance company options
I don't know if this is an appropriate question but here goes. I've had State Farm insurance for over 40 years and I have become more and more disgruntled with their claim processing procedures. For years all claims were handled out of your local office. The agent and adjuster knew you and knew the area if an accident was involved. I had an extremely minor accident a couple of weeks ago, explained it to my agency and have had to REPEATEDLY explain this to multiple clueless people in remote regional offices.
I have the following question: Does anyone on here have an agency they can recommend that still does business the old fashioned way? I'm tired of trying to deal with people I don't know and could care less about what exactly happened.

My opinion of insurance companies. .....
None want to pay.
They mostly all suck.
I buy the cheapest that has acceptable coverage.
Prepared to fight it out if nessary.
None of them have any loyalty to me, and I have none to them.
It's the current state were in.

I like USAA. I've been with them for 40+ years. I use them for insurance, banking, investments, mortgages and just about anything else I need.

I also use USAA. If you're not eligible for USAA try Amica. Pretty good rates and excellent service.

Deal only with an independent insurance broker that sells multiple companies. Never buy from a one company agent.
Sit down with the independent broker and explain what you want: many actually coordinate claims for their clients.
Years ago, I worked for a silk stocking law firm that did only insurance defense work.
None of us (the lawyers that defended insurance claims) would dream of buying insurance from the big name companies (e.g. Allstate, State Farm, Farmers, USAA, Progressive etc) since we know how they handle claims.
We defended the claims for these insurance companies, but wouldn't dream of buying insurance from any of them.
Find an independent broker.

My buddy is into it with Farmer's right now because they take a credit bureau's word over his. The point in question is his home address, can you believe.

My broker looks for insurors with small market share in the area, that have claims handling practices that won't tie me up messing with my own insurer.
Right now, I buy Auto Owners insurance.

We get auto insurance through Costco for 1/2 or what we could get local quotes. 15 Sub Forester, 08 Dodge 1500 and 09 Suzuki Dr 650. Claims have been more than fair.

I've had State Farm since 2001. I had to use them once in 2003 so I can't say if it was good/bad or even who I talked to. To be honest it would probably be more of a pain in the ... If I had to switch because one time I had to talk to someone not my agent

I've had State Farm since 1975 and just two claims in 42 years: One trivial claim for a tree branch that fell on my house in a storm way back in 1978 and another claim when a sneaky, dishonest neighbor "accidentally" vandalized my property. That latter claim (for $3,000) was supposed to go to subrogation against the evil neighbor's insurance company but State Farm eventually chickened out. They said it wasn't worth the legal cost to pursue it.
That said, we positively hate State Farm for some weird, nasty stuff they have pulled on us lately and we won't be using them again at the new place. We now know there are far better options. We are just staying with them until we move just to avoid the hassle of changing companies with so little time left here.

If you don't qualify for them try Shelter - if they are available in your area. MY BIL is an agent for them and they work the old fashioned way - he knows all his customers. If I couldn't get USAA I would go with Shelter.

As advised above, seek out an independent broker. Do not use an agent, as they are bound to place your coverage with the company that they represent as an agent. Better yet, find several brokers and ask them to shop the field to meet your needs, then pick the best offer put forth if it meets your needs. Go thru this process every several years.

Recently had problems with TWO State Farm agents. They would not send me from to file for beneficiary's benefits.
They wanted to get me into their office so they could try to sell me some financial/investment plan and collect a commission.
Letter to home office resulted in getting the correct form mailed to me.
You mileage may vary ...

Do try to use a broker rather than an agent. If a broker is big enough, they may have a claims coordinator on staff to act as liaison for you with the carrier. My experience with claims coordinators is that they are well meaning, but often do not understand coverage much better than the average person on the street. They will also mostly focus on the large claims or the claims entered by their larger commercial clients.
The only agency that I know of that still has on site adjusters if Farm Bureau - and then only at the larger offices.
I adjust claims for a living for a multitude of carriers both domestic and foreign.

Had USAA for years. Very happy. They left S.C.
Had AIG for years. Very happy. They left S.C.
Now have Farmer's. One month ago I added a 2017 Corvette. Annual premium is $550. Last week added a 2017 Ford F150. Annual premium is $750. List price for car is double that for the truck. When I questioned them about this, they said, and I am paraphrasing, Das whut da book say. Whatcha gonna do? It's the new world order.

We go through a local insurance broker. Never had a major claim but the idea of a local brokerage is that they can help you through it. They shop around for the cheapest and best options for us. They are paid by the insurance companies, not us. I've compared the cost of going through a broker with the cost of going straight to the insurance company and its pretty much the same. The best thing is you deal with someone local.
