Default Nutrisystem ads on Fox News.

I watch those ads and I think of the dog that chases a car and wonder what the dog will do if it catches the car. Let’s say you want to lose 40 pounds, you subscribe to Nutrisystem, and you lose the 40 pounds - what then? Do you stay on Nutrisystem and continue to lose weight (no), go back to the old eating habits that made you over-weight in the first place (presumably no), or do you change the diet you ate pre-Nutrisystem diet to maintain your new weight? That would seem to be the most sensible answer. But if you have it in your head that you’ll be changing your diet, why not just go to that new diet that you design and control, lose the weight, skip the Nutrisystem step? What am I missing?

Diet and exercise to lose weight, and it takes time. There is not magic solution.

The point is that you'd learn that with proper eating you will either loose or maintain weight. It's no different than a good diet and exercise. If you stop both of those and start eating junk food again you'll of course gain weight

I have often wondered why people would go through surgery to lose weight when it would be cheaper and easier just to push away from the table.

Most people use it as an easy out but there are people for whom surgery is the only option. Hormones play a big part and not all of it can be solved with a pill

Diets do not work - long term! You need to CHANGE YOUR LIFE STYLE! As soon as you get off a diet, weight starts pouring back on. That is actually worse for your heart than being a few pounds over weight. CHANGE LIFE STYLE!

How about the ads that say, "Lose weight without diet or exercise!" That pretty much leaves illness.

Default My wife eats a lot of salad.....

My wife eats a lot of salad and works a very physical job. She might sit for about 1/2 hour a day, but is always doing some housework, too. She is gaining weight rapidly and is fighting like anything to keep it off. Obviously, there is something to do with aging and hormones. She's been getting tested and nothing shows as the culprit. She hasn't just been 'trying', she's really fighting it. So I love her all the same for it.

There is probably a maintenance program for once you reach your goal. However, none of these plans are anything that a person couldn't do on their own.

Diet and exercise are the key to losing and keeping weight off.

Read the food labels, limit calorie and fat intake for the day. More fruits and vegetables, drink water (or some other non calorie drink).

I'm in a study where everyone keeps a "food diary". Tracking what I eat helps me be more aware of what and how much I'm eating.

The harder part is keeping the weight off.

Depends what kind of salads she eats. Lots of fast food salads will hit close to 1000 calories each.

Toppings and dressings account for most of the calories and fats. Creamy dressings are the worst, along with fried anything on the salad. Also serving size of the dressings can be deceiving. Most serving size for dressings is 2 Tablespoons. That's not a lot. The dressing on the salad in front of me is "Lite Italian". 45 calories, 40 of those from fat. 4.5 grams of fat in 2 TBLS.

A good hint when getting a salad in a restaurant is to ask for the dressing on the side. Most places seem to poor about half a cup of dressing on their salads.

Dieting is a journey, not a destination.

How many have seen Kirstie Alley pimping weight loss commercials? I guess after she got paid it was okay to put all the weight back on again.

No. As been said. Weight loss has nothing to do with diets. Diets don't work. Sooner or later the person gzins the weight back. Doesn't matter if it's Kristie Alley or you! Once the diet stops weight comes back! What works is a lifestyle change. Better eating and exercise

You right, it doesn't mean it's healthy, but she doesn't eat junk and always gets the vinigrette type dressing. I'm the one that's bad about piling on the Thousand Island and French stuff. We like Greek salads, which are pretty healthy, though I"m sure Feta cheese has got to have calories, we don't eat that much of it.

We don't get paid for losing weight and touting a product. But yeah, we all have the same problem, rich and poor, famous and non famous

Look very closely at the small print running at the bottom of those ads. They always say something like how it works effectively with a proper diet and exercise program. Ya think?

Arik, your answers are becoming tedious to say the least...

Going on a diet is a lifestyle change and one would think (unlike you) that if it works you should stick to it.If it works then it is no longer a diet but your new lifestyle.Everyone processes what they eat differently according to their life style. Not everyone needs the same amount of proteins or carbs in their diet.Exercise can be just walking a little bit each day.It doesn't have to be an hour at the gym or 20min. at home on the treadmill. Not everyone is able to exercise to the same degree as others but if a particular plan of weight loss works for you then it would behoove you to stick to it and not show your fat face on TV just to make a buck.

Nope. Diets don't work not because I said it but because it's proven. Over and over. Diets don't work because no one ever sticks to them can you eat Jenny Craig for the rest of your life? No! No one can! What works is constant exercise and a lifestyle change. If diets worked they wouldn't be making billions. Once and done!

Her peobl is like 99% of the people. Once it works they stop. Stop because it's working and stop because it's nont sustainable.

Also, I like how you're "behooving people! Maybe you should be her manager! You obviously know what's good for her.

What you think about me I couldn't care less

Not saying this'll work for anyone else but--here's how I dropped at least 80 pounds. I fell in love with a beautiful woman-bought about 40 packs of Jack Links beef jerkey ( which HEBs had on sale for about 1/2 price) and the jerky replaced a meal a day for awhile- also enjoying high protein tv dinners. After about a week-my stomach shrank so much I couldnt finish a small apple before getting full. Of course, I started going to the gym too-having a lot of incentives to do so. The best incentive-was Sabrina, the 10 or so ladies I met at the gym, etc.

Anyway, over about 9 months, I lost the 80 pounds. However, due to my chronic insomnia, I regained about 3 pounds.

Quickest and easiest way for me to loose 30 lbs of ugly fat would be to chop my head off.

All you have to do is call Nutrisystem and ask the cost of their program for food on a monthly basis and that will probably take your appetite away! Believe me they're in it primarily for the money period!

Gathering the will power to make the change is the hardest part, IMO. Common sense says that veggies are better for the waistline than ice cream. Likewise, getting out of the chair and walking a couple of miles 4-5 days a week, along with light calisthenics. Putting the changes needed into action and keeping on course is the trick.

For the last two months I've made adjustments. No special "diet". Just eating more healthy and easing back into moderate exercise. While trying to lose weight, a "journal" of everything eaten has helped me drop 15 pounds. More calories out than in is the simple version.

Another important saying I've heard is "It's not what you eat between Christmas and New Year that kills you; but between New Years and Christmas". Not really, but the concept is true. Cheating occasionally (within reason) has been my approach. About 10 more pounds and I'll be at my goal. Adding a bit more muscle mass over time will help burn more calories at rest. I may try for an extra 5 pounds just to give a little cushion.

For me this approach worked to keep it off for years. The cheating in both food intake and lack of exercise finally had me too fat again. Now that I'm semi-retired, I can focus once more.

I haven't calc'd it, but I'd bet my diet is at a bare minimum 45% fat. All healthy fats from grass fed beef, pastured pork, olive and avocado oils, leaf lard and grass fed butter. No margarines or other manufactured fakes, no hydrogenated fats. In case anyone hasn't heard, the old paradigm that fat makes you fat has been discarded for some time now.
Granted, excess caloric intake makes you fat, and fats are loaded with calories, but cutting back on good fats and substituting carbohydrates in breads and other baked goods will not cause weight loss, nor will it contribute to heart health. Now, taking a plate of greens and covering it with grated cheese, dressing and a load of croutons and calling it healthy is just fooling yourself, unless it's your only meal of the day.
I like Micheal Pollan's diet advice for the most part : "Eat REAL food, mostly plants, not too much." REAL food being the key. Stay out of the center aisles in the grocery store and shop only in meat, fish, dairy and produce. If it comes in a box, chances are you're better off without it.

My wife had that problem. We found that she was getting too much calcium and it was causing her thyroid gland to go all wonky.

Because of a degenerative motor nerve condition that started 6 or 7 years ago, my activity level dropped to near zero and I almost ended up in an electric scooty chair. Also My weight went up to 230 pounds (actually that's just when I stopped weighing myself) and walking was getting difficult.
It took time but between my wife and myself we restructured our diets to stay healthy and keep ourselves in a caloric deficit.
A pound of fat is 3,500 calories and I had lotsa pounds to lose.
We joined the YMCA, take spin classes and workout on the weight machines.
Today we went hiking for about 6.5 miles and I weigh 157.5 pounds.

When it comes to weight loss, fats are fats. "Good fats" vs "Bad fats" is valid when it comes to cardiac health and other things, but not weight loss.

When you cut back on fats and calories, that's not substituting for anything, it's cutting back. Carbs are a different issue because they are high in calories even if some are low in fat.

The paradigm has been discarded by people who don't know what they are talking about.

Cut calories, cut fats, eat more fruits and vegetables, exercise (20-30 minutes a day minimum), and you'll lose weight.

That would only lose me about a pound and half of bone. I need a bellyoctomy.

I finally figured it all out. Studying those charts I have come to the
conclusion that I'm just to short (6'3") for my weight (250#).

The girlfriends of the Nutrisystem owners need their own apartments, cars, nights out and clothes - do not be so selfish!

I'd miss the Marie Osmond commercials. Mighty hot for a 50-something mom.

Ya lose the 40 on Nutrisystem. Then you're better able to drag your not-so-fat self off the couch and move around more to burn off more calories.

Depending on her age she ought to check with an OB/Gyn or endochinoligist. Poly-cystic ovarian syndrome will cause the body to not metabolize sugar correctly. Taking metformin (an off the books use-not yet approved by the FDA for this purpose) helps the body metabolize the sugar correctly and the weight loss can be startling.

This is the tried and true formula that has worked for a long time.

OTOH, this article is interesting, Why the calorie is broken - ScienceAlert

Current means of counting calories are an imprecise means of calculating how many calories foods contain. Plus, cooking some foods might change how many calories are available to the body. Plus HOW foods are cooked might affect that.

I'm not planning to change my diet even more based on this article, since there's a lot of speculation in it. However, intuitively (always dangerous when discussing science), it does answer the question of "Why is it I ate less yesterday, but weigh more today?", that I find myself asking from time to time.

She doesn't look much like she did on the 'Donnie and Marie Show". She was 'pretty' but she seems to have smoldered with age.

It's not a diet, it's a lifestyle has been my motto for three years now. Never have paid much attention to Nutrisystem ads. I do my own thing with Google Fit, Map My Walk, and My Fitness Pal apps on a somewhat smartphone and my own cooking. I prefer that lifestyle to a mail order diet lifestyle.

Obesity issues may be caused by health problems, psychological issues, or simple overeating and not exercising.

A diet ad that touts eating bars and shakes for weight loss probably is not going to work in the long run.

Don't we all smolder? She is 57 and gave birth to 3 children and adopted several more,

Not to smoldered in this 2017 picture. She can deliver Nutrsystem to my door anytime!

Does she eat Nutrisystems daily or is she simply a spokesperson?

I noticed Marie on those Nutrisystems ads about the time she was on Dancing with the "Stars". Im no expert but I imagine dancing eight hours a day had something to do with her weight loss.

Just eliminate processed sugar from your daily intake and the weight falls off. I don't and won't exercise, I eat what I want and simply cut processed sugar out of my diet and have lost close to 30lbs since the first of the year!
