"Detroit" USA Movie shows 5" nickel Model 10
I just watched the trailer for "Detroit" a USA channel movie scheduled for 8/4. I caught enough of a quick view of a S&W to go back and stop it for a better look. Whoever is holding the gun is not shown. I did confirm it was a S&W nickel model 10 with the 5" barrel. I own one and just happened to have it right at hand. Mine is not a Detroit Police marked version, but it is a 10-5 nickel 5". The movie is set in 1967.... "Police and the military spring into action when rioting and civil unrest rocks Detroit during the summer of 1967". Could it be that they are actually going to show Detroit LEO's with the exact correct issued revolver of that time period ?!?! The pics are my 10-5 with modified smooth targets.

Detroit did issue five-inch nickel M-10's, so that's correct.
Interestingly, I was watching episodes of an old TV series with Robert Taylor. I think the title was, Captain of Detectives. It opens with officers at a range, firing what look like five-inch M&P/Model 10's, but they have half nickel shape front sights and lanyard rings. Prob. British surplus .38-200's that the prop house got a good deal on...

The DPD model 10s do show up around here on occasion. A lot of them were carried in full flap holsters, and are somewhat the worse for the experience.

On the Detroit PD, most cops who were at all "gun guys" and even a good percentage of those who weren't, got rid of the Model 10 as soon as they were off probation. That's why so many are around in very good shape. They sat on the shelf for most of a 25-year career.
DPD policy was that after you were off probation, you could carry whatever revolver you wanted as long as it was Smith and Wesson or Colt, .38 or bigger with a 4" barrel or bigger for patrol.
Later they approved the Model 39 and 59 for carry. Later still, they approved the Model 645 for carry. After that, they went to Glocks and later to Smith semi-autos. At some point, they approved the Walther PPK in .380 for off-duty. Probably because some guy with some rank wanted to carry one.
So it would be MOST correct to see Detroit cops, in 1967, carrying a variety of handguns that fit those caveats.
As soon as I was off probation, I carried a 25-5 and later a 645.

I saw the trailer and noticed that they had the correct side arm for the time. Same type I was issued, a 10-5.
I'm not too happy to see that movie come out as it was a sad time for Detroit. The Alger's motel shooting was questionable and I'm sure it's not going to be a fair minded effort on the producer's part to portray it.
The whole 1967 Riots rang the death knell for a once great city. No need to open up old wounds but money talks and .............you know the rest. Keep the pot stirred up.

From what I saw, the Algiers Motel shooting is the main focus of "Detroit."

I was just 12yrs old and living in Detroit with my parents. My mom was anti gun so we weren't supposed to have any Guns in house. After the riots got started.I told my dad where my older brother had a shotgun he had brought back from Tn hidden. But there was no ammo for the gun and none for sale any where around. So we watched the smoke in the distance and prayed we wouldn't need the gun.Detroit never recovered and a once great city to live in became a sewer.

I'm not likely to actually watch the movie. I'm sure it will be anti-police. I don't need anything raising my blood pressure !!

I lived through the Cleveland riots during about the same time period, but it was fairly minor as compared to Detroit and Watts. One of the (many) reasons I hightailed it out of Cleveland.

Can't say anything because this is a highly political movie and dings will be forthcoming.

Wonder how much they took right from the book. I believe the author, John Hersey, was a local reporter at the time. I know a couple of STRESS cops who were mentioned in they book on the periphery of the "action".
