This is embarassing to ask about but, Shasta i extremely ill and on IV support. Im now out of loan money and the vets saying she needs to be in for at least a week. I will give more details Sunday afternoon. In a nut shell, she has diabetes and when I dropped her off on Wed, her reading was 600. She wasnt improving much but, I visited her today and she was down to 189 this morning but went back to 512?

I went there today to put her down--but they gave me some hope. Shasta has a 25/75 chance. When I show up she does try to perk up. I know my visits help. My problem is--I got a loan for $600, but its almost gone and I dont gett paid for weeks. If anyone knows how to set up a go fund me account-or maybe can set one up for me? id be extremely greatful.

Ringo Kid, I hope that things work out for Shasta and you. But be prepared for nothing to work either and you lose Shasta.

I say this because a little over a month ago we lost our wolf-dog, Kira. The day before I had to leave for the rig, Kira threw up after eating her morning meal and was a little lethargic that afternoon and evening. That was Tuesday. By Wednesday afternoon, my daughter had to bring her to a pet hospital in Metairie, LA because she was extremely lethargic. Since she was a high content wolf-dog, none of the local vets were licensed to treat her and Banfield didn't have the facilities to give transfusions. Once there at MedVet, they found her platelet count to be extremely low and needed a transfusion, which they gave. They diagnosed her with an autoimmune reaction and treated for that. The meds seemed to stop that and my daughter brought her home about 10 days later.

She was home when I got back in from the rig on Thursday morning, but weak as a kitten. She had also lost about 12-14 lbs in the 2 weeks I was gone and not eating much of anything. By Friday, she was swelling up and had to go back to MedVet. They found that the meds she was on for the autoimmune disease had shut her digestive system down and had to pump her stomach out and also clear the rest of her digestive system. She stayed at MedVet until the Friday before I had to go back to work (leaving the following Tuesday at midnight). They also inserted a feeding tube into her so that we could get nutrition into here even if she didn't feel like eating.

We brought her back home and that Friday she was very weak. Saturday looked like she was making a turn for the better. She actually ate some chicken I had rotisserie on the pit and was looking more like her old self and was a bit stronger. By Sunday evening she was starting to go back down but still responsive and going to the bathroom. By Monday, she was visibly weaker by the afternoon, but Banfield in Lafayette (her normal vet) couldn't see her until Tuesday. That Monday night it was clear that the trip to Banfield on Tuesday would be her last ride. We brought her in early the next morning and put her down, as watching her suffer was just too terrible. It was the toughest thing I've had to do in years and years, but we couldn't stand to see her suffer. She went peacefully with myself and my daughter holding and petting her and telling her to let go and sleep.

My daughter did some research and found that what Kira had was a disease called Evans Syndrome and reading about it described the sequence of events that Kira went through to a "T". It seems it mostly hits female dogs of middle age with spayed dogs seeming to be more susceptible (Kira was spayed). We went from a healthy dog to one we had to put down in a little less than a month.

I'm sorry if it seems like I am hijacking your thread, but I hurt too bad about this to post this before now. Even now, just writing this out has me tearing up. But I needed to get this off my chest. And to warn you that treatment can get extremely expensive, depending on what the prognosis is. I spent close to $15K and will be paying this out for several months and still didn't save Kira.

I wish Shasta all the best for the both of you and I hope that the vets can get her better. My prayers are going up to the big guy above for this to work out well for you and Shasta.

We had cat who got run over by a car. We found out at the vet that nothing internal was damaged, just her pelvis was broken in two. If she had internal injuries, it was pretty much no question for me, but I had to think about my wife and son. We paid out a tidy sum for surgery and got her screwed back together, but the kitty is now fine and she's sweet as pie. I thought that we had it bad but a friend told me that she had to spend $4000 on her dog that had bad intestinal problems, which was about a thousand more than we did. I know it sounds foolish, but we love those critters.

My little girl had auto immune disease and then a stomach flip a year later. Both required trips from my vet to the local animal hospital and each visit ran around $4,000. I just finished paying the second one off. You might try looking into Care Credit. That's what I used and then an offer came in the mail for a 0% credit card for 18 months. They did charge a 3% transfer fee but $120 up front or added on is still better than 24% interest a year or $960 for 12 months or $1,440 for 18 months.

That's a good point about Care Credit, JSR III. We used that around a year ago on Kira when she had blown out her knee and needed an operation, which ran around $2500. They had a 0% APR on it when we applied and were accepted for it if you paid it off in 6 months or less. We paid it out in around 5 months, so we didn't pay any interest. It's definitely something to look into, RK.

Vets are a good group.
They won't try to build false hope but as long as there is a fighting chance they give all they have.
Ultimately the decision belongs to the pet owner. The vet can only play the hand they're dealt.

Long story short, had vet try to convince me to pay for $7000 operation I knew my dog didn't need, then tried to make me look bad for refusing the operation. Over 6 years ago and the dog is doing fine.

Carl, I think you are the only one who can set up Go Fund Me as it has to be tied to a bank account. I believe that is how it works but not sure.

Thank all of you. I cant ask anyone here for donations, but am, in no position to refuse. As of Sat, im about $515 in the hole but, I can get about $160 for monday since I got refunds on some Kia car parts I never used.

When I visited Sat about 1 pm, Shasta was very tired. I had her moved to a quieter room and spoke to her. At first her head was limp-couldnt move her tail-her eyes at slits. After a cuple minutes-one of her eyes opened wider and I purposely made motions to see if she really knew I was there. I wtched as her eye followed me. Shasta then lifted her head a few times and looked around a bit.

Both eyes widened after about 20 minutes-and she managed to shift and sit--though only by her tummy. Shasta then moved around attempting to get up on all fours--and did so-mostly be herself. That made me feel a bit bettre. That diabetes is whats doing her the most harm.

Sat morning as the staff arrived-saw Shasta standing and either trying to eat and drink-or just eat. They took her reading and it was normal-but sometime in the morning-shot up to about 512? I know Shasta is trying to get up so she can rub against me or climb into my arms.

She has an IV in her leg-and I know is very painful to her. They moved it first from her left to he right leg as both are shaved.

My wife kept Otis our rescue mutt wayyy to long before we put him down. I sometimes wonder if we do the heroic things for our pets more for ourselves than for them. Right now my wife is sticking our daughter's 16 year old cat twice a week to give the cat IV saline to keep the kidneys flushed and Pud our other cat is now in his 6th week kennel bound with a healing broken leg after the wife backed over him in the driveway. I often question for who's benefit do we do the heroics..............sometimes after a certain point it is for us rather than them.....But then this is the choice we made when we brought them into our lives. Great joy is usually followed by great sorrow at some point-it's the way it is.

I almost had them stop treatment yesterday-till they told me that Shasta was responding to treatment-though she has had her glucose reading? go back to 512--bt at least its not 600. Ill be going to see her about 10 am--and see whats happening?

I can keep het UTI under control-but the diabetes is what's hurting her the most. If they can control that? she'll be OK and get better. Shasta proved to me-on the last 3 visits--that she tries more when im there and can do it if I can keep her treatment up. The vet says she needs to be there for at least a week. Im HOPING that means that she is good to come home-and will not be fed through a syringe. Ill be finding out more on Monday. The Techs who were there Sat couldnt answer all the questions i had been asking.

I just tried setting one up, but didnt get past the page where they needed a photo. I dont have a facebook account either. Im not sure how to get around that, but will see if someone here can get a photo of Shasta off my Tablet and maybe try signing on again.

Ive been grinding that through my mind sinse Wed. I just dont know the right answer--because of what happened on Friday and Sat. Sat I went there prepared to say a final goodbye, but was encouraged by what I was told.

It hurts me that Shasta is in some pain due to IV--but??? then im also pondering if I have the right for her to be in pain with continued treatment.

Her cage is over another tha had a sick dog in it. I found out later that the dog didnt "make it" and that hurt as well.

I had one about 3 years ago--but never could get it to work. Now I dont have the ability to set one up-as my tablet cant do that much. I had tried to set one up back then, because I was going to try selling stuff on ebay--but the account I had-never worked.

It's OK, most of the world wouldn't want to come to my neighborhood. They can contact Fred, Wayne, Federali Etc for it. Anyone that wants my phone number too can also have it. Also, a sad update from about 20 minutes ago. As I was replying to PMS, the vet called me and said that Shasta passed away. I just visited her earlier and she was on her feet and she was eating and drinking fine. I don't know what happened since but am trying to find out. I'm guessing she may have had a heart attack due to being near so many dogs? Her bill is just under $740.00 and I have $200. to put on it by tomorrow.

I'm comforted that Shasta's no longer in pain and she's giving the Lord more joy by rubbing against his legs.

It is difficult to deal with the loss of one of our furry friends but as others have stated sometimes we hold on for our sake when we would be better off letting them go. I believe that sometimes God steps in and makes the decision for us. Take comfort in the knowledge that she is pain free and that you gave her the best care possible while she was here.

I almost did let her go Sat, but had more good than bad news. They were closed Sunday-so I couldnt visit her.I know if I could have? I know she should have lasted for my monday visit.

Shasta loved rubbing against my legs and also walking through them letting her tail tickle my thighs. Id reach down pet her-she would rub her wet nose into the palm of my hand. I am comforted knowing she's giving the Lord the same pleasures she gave to me. Im grateful I was allowed to have her 14 years, but wish it could have been a few more.

Sometimes at night, I could almost swear that I can hear her eating her dry food even though its all gone.

Thank you. Im working tonight so will be thinking mostly of that but regret when it'll slow. I skipped the gym again this morning not having the energy to go.

As of today it was down to about $240? I wish I had thought of that possibility to save you all from going out of your way. Their number is 361-993-2702. I dont know what happened with the total I was quoted a couple days ago? but glad its now lower. I turned in two 8 pound bags of science diet food which I guess got me a credit of about $43?

She is just checking up on you, really.

Thank you sir. Shasta is one of those that comes along rarely. They said she is a domestic short-hair--but still didnt know her exact breed. Her fur felt like rabbit fur. Ill be picking up her ashes later today before work. My family already knows im to be cremated when that time comes? and my ashes mixed with hers-then spread to the winds somewhere in the Hill Country.

Im not getting another cat for some time, but probably will by next year. Shasta is now tickling the Lords thighs with her tail.

I hear ya. The first time Shasta stayed over-night at the vets--as I was driving home and maybe 2 miles from my house--I KNOW I heard her meow.

This last time--when I left her Wednesday morning--I didnt hear anything--which I saw as a not so good sign.

If it were not for you all here--and one of my neighbors--I would be in a deeper depression. I know losing a pal isnt easy--even if you had them only a short time--but 14 years--makes it rough as heck.

Our little guy was doing fine at 21:00, and stroked out at 01:00 while we were piled up on the couch. We just can't predict how they will leave us. I understand the loss of a pet who is more a child to us than many can understand.

Sometimes we just have to understand that they needed to go home. We can't keep them here forever.
