I find many of these poor fellows are just lonely and looking for a conversation. YMMV.

"All hat and no cattle" comes to mind. Those who think they know it all
are very irritating to those of us who do know it all. Only problem is
by the time you know it all you can't remember it.

Many years ago, I was at a local informal range near here, with my friend Kip. A guy shows up, who tries to impress us with his knowledge, and his list of firearms. (none of which he brought along) I'm standing there listening to him, while Kip decides to shoot at a coffee can 100 yards away, with a Rossi .38 Special. This guy and I are in mid conversation, and every time Kip shoots, it's followed by a "PLINK". The guy finally looks over and asks "What's he shooting??" I said, "Oh, just a little .38." "He said, "I wouldn't want him shooting at me!"
I thought to myself, "those who can, do, and those who can't, brag!"

I was in the service with a guy like that - we always said take whatever Jim said and divide by 10 to get the truth.

Sorry. I could not resist.
Seriously, though, I know a guy that's always flashing his 1911--in every picture he's in.
And another fellow that constantly opines the value of empty-chamber carry, especially using an appendix holster. When I first heard him say that, I wasn't so much dumbstruck at his empty-chamber suggestion, as I was at the appendix carry thing.
I kept thinking to myself--"Where the hell does he fit the gun?"

No, but telling a lie long enough makes it their reality. Some of these folks actually believe the lies they tell.

I have ran into one of
these guys at the gun store and at gun shows. I had a early Air Force survival rifle made by Springfield Armory I wanted to sell. this younger guy wanted to see it and then had a story about how he had to use a gun just like that when he was lost in the woods of Canada. this thing was a 22/410 over and under. good for rabbits and grouse, not bear and moose.

That the rifle with a squeeze lever for a trigger? My dad had one back in the day, and sold it before I could lay claim. Really nice little backpack rifle . . .

This is why I shoot bullseye (not very well, but that's for a different day.)
The paper never lies.
Ask them to come to the range and show us how it's done.

Reminds of a video I watched the other day on You Tube. 3 Guys, mid 20's, black clothes, gloves, beards. They are reviewing a S&W J Frame (638 I think). They each shoot 5 rounds at a target that's across a pond, 50-60 yards away, 15 misses. They all state the gun has a terrible trigger pull and is hard to shoot and should be used at extreme close range only! The video had 3 times as many thumbs down as up.

I found out a long time ago you can't make a liar admit he is a liar. Also don't argue with an idiot because by standers will not know who the idiot is.
Sometimes I have a hard time believing what even an expert gun shooter can do yet claim he is that skilled at shooting. Yet people believe he actually did it just because he is a skilled shooter. It reminds me of watching Penn and Teller "Fool Us" show. It's called magic. Slight of hand and optical illusion. People will believe what they choose to believe also. How's the saying go, believe 1/10 of what you hear and only half of what you see.

I've noticed what really tees them off is to agree with them, then just keep doing what you were doing.
"You need to do this and that, it's what the competition winners/Navy SEALS/Black Ops use!"
Okay, but I'm doing it my way. Go ahead, if you want to do that, I'm not going to try & stop you.
"B-b-but..."
Of course you can always play the game with them, when I've done it they didn't figure it out, they just figured I was a fellow traveler.

There's a thing called "The Silent Professional".
Basically, they're the opposite of this kind of blowhard we're discussing in this thread. They don't feel the need to tell everyone how much they know (or really don't know) and in general are probably a LOT better at firearms.

At first, those guys used to bug the heck outta me, but now, as I've grown older and good comedy entertainment on television has become hard to find, I've come to appreciate these bozos as true comedy relief. I mean, if you think about, these poor guys are a real "kick in the pants."
If you really want to have some fun, the next time one of those guys starts going off like that, just say, "Hey, Larry, tell us about the time you shot Osama bin Laden." Then sit back and be prepared to be entertained.

There is a saying for those folks. "He drinks his own bathwater!" Some folks just like to brag and others feel the need to argue with anything said. I actually get a kick out of just sitting back and listen, enjoying the ride, cheap entertainment. I will admit to skipping over certain posts though, but most are entertaining to some degree. Pretty easy to tell who the BS'ers are.

LOL. I agree nicky.
Which reminds me of another story....
20+ years back we had a transplant from FL who opened a cafe/bar in our little town along the MO River south of me. He was a BIG time, big game hunter. Shot NOTHING but Weatherby's. THAT alone says something. He DID have a good knowledge of rifles and cartridges, reloaded, etc.
He was apparently a VERY successful long range hunter, as it seemed all his game was taken at 600-700 yds. At least that was the story.
During the Fall a lot of hunters came to the area. One evening he was regaling a few guys on his latest LR feat ,when one of the guys called BS on the story.
He said; This here bar table is what....24" in diameter? Tell You what...I'll put a 24" diameter target out at HALF the distance you are claiming and give You $100 for every shot you can put on that target. But...for every MISS...You pay me a hundred.
The shooting match NEVER seemed to ever get scheduled. Always something to interfere with it.
LOL.

Well there are videos similar to that being done and with a handgun held upside down even. Ripley's believe it or not comes to mind for some reason. Even Hickok45 sometimes misses the 80 yard gong while holding a handgun upright for cripe sakes.
