Default the know it all

I stopped at walmart to pick up some ammo and while there a fellow told me I should save the brass and reload. I said I no longer reload because I am turning into a old dude. He then tells me he reloads 1000 rounds an hour for his hundreds of guns and that he has won pistol matches all over. I said I had been shooting for 60 years and he replies that he started when he was 5 years old. Says he carries a 10 mm and asked me if I know what a 10mm is. Then shows me his mag with the 10 mm in it. I think the term blowhard comes to mind. Maybe everything he says is true or not but I could care less. Anyone else ever run into this type of person at a gun shop or range, you know the one who knows every thing and is better than you at every thing.

One-uppers can never be defeated in their eyes.

Got 10 guns?..I have 600. You don't reload?.. your a fool. You reload?.. That's for chumps. US champion shooter?.. world champ here.

It's only exhausting until you start playing games with them. Tell them you were an astronaut or that you are an astrophysicist to see where they go with it. Then get more outrageous with each claim.

Unfortunately, these guys can be more than annoyances. On more than a few occasions, I've had to ask a shop fly to keep their opinions to themselves vs confuse new customers with their superior view of the world of weapons.
IMHO (and practice), gun purchasers should be advised of options by the shops trained staff, not bullied into a bad decision by know-it-all bystanders. This is especially true for new shooters when it comes to choices of caliber, action type, safeties etc. In short: One size does not fit all.

As an aside, I've been noticing more of these experts seem to have more keyboard than trigger time under their belt. :-)

Yep the blow hard syndrome. He has to let everyone know how great he is. Even on the best presses can you load 1000 rounds in an hour?

I swannee, you could make a novel out of the exploits of such a highly trained, equipped and egotistical mall cop. "I used a breaching round to enter the stall, and there he was. The woman's little lost puppy. She had left him in the rest room and he accidentally locked the stall door. And I was lucky that I finishd that 'operation' because when I did, terrorists stormed the hobby shop and took an original Ty Cobb baseball card hostage. How dare they insult the United States of America like that?"

Oh yeah? Well I carry an 88Magnum. I'd show you one of the 10 extra mags I carry, but you have to have a special government license with extra top secret clearance just to see it so, I can't.

Reminds me of the old cartoon "The World of Commander McBragg I watched as a Kid. Watch it some time on your computer. We've all met them before. One upmanship is their stock and trade. "Lost a leg in the war...well, my head was blown clean off but a good medic was able to re-attach it with bailing wire and duct tape until I could be sent for triage...

Knew a guy from HS who was the consummate BS Artist.

Thirty years after HS, we met and he regaled me on his hunting adventures.

Went on and on about the man eating BLACK bear he shot someplace up in Canada.

" Shot it with my Custom Weatherby" He told me.

"What Weatherby cartridge" I asked.

"it's a .308 Weatherby Magnum" , he replied.

"Sure it's not a THREE HUNDRD Weatherby" Said I.

"No! A THREE OH EIGHT Weatherby.....Had it built for me Special".

...he can defeat any man. Or so says the brag of McBragg.

"Quite"

PS: I'd expect him to say that he sewed his own head back on, with quick thinking, of course.

I always like the fellows who have a family member of friend in the Navy. Of course, the friend is almost always SEAL. Never a bosun's mate or quartermaster, always a SEAL! And if they have a buddy in the Army, he will, of course, be a Geen Beret. Now I do not doubt that people do have friends who are indeed special forces, but most of the time it just seems like a fisherman's lie.

Reminds me of my one of my husband's old coworkers who was 19 years old and supposedly was in Special forces, awarded two purple hearts (for saving his entire squad), and was honorably discharged after stepping on a landmine which broke both of his legs. Must have had a great doctor, he didn't limp or have any scars.

I frequently buy ammo at our local Runnings ( good prices), and naturally wander over to the gun counter to look. Several times I've entertained myself by eaves dropping on a "salesman" trying to sell some sort of handgun to a novice buyer. Ya know what I'm talkin' about

I used to see those types when I used to go to the old gun shop, my friend that owned the shop would have some fun with them, now I just see those types on the Forums that I am on, occasionally I will see one at the range, but not often, private shooting club, no mall ninja's off the streets.

Some folks feel the need to share......wither you want the info or not.

I choose to keep what lit'l I know to myself. Especially the good stuff.

If I were to tell you what I know....
Then you will have what you know, and what I know too.......

.

And yes, they are everywhere, in every walk of life.

An old saying, says it best. "Those that speak the most have done the least".

Ran into a bunch of those over the years training those to ride motorcyles. I use to like to train the ladies on the range. They would listen and learn . The guys with the. "I got this " attitude. I would. Stop them half way on bike range and tell since you " Got This " you can pick up all the orange cones you just hit lol.

For some reason, these type guys tend to seek me out to impart their wisdom. I've found that staying out of WalMart helps.

My wife and I are railroad enthusiasts. We like to ride trains at various tourist/historic railroads. Inevitably the biggest "Foamer" on the property finds us and begins his oral diarrhea of falsehoods, half truths and impossibilities regarding all things railroad. If we escape a train ride without being waylaid by one of these windbags we count our blessings!

By the way, railroad enthusiasts nicknamed the Know-it all types who follow trains "Foamers" because they are so rabid about trains they nearly foam at the mouth.

Gunstore commandos remind me of an old adage that went something like this:-

"Never argue with fools. They'll beat you down to their level then whip you with their experience."

True, a similar saying is "The older I get, the better I was!"

When I was younger, those guys used to frost my cookies. Now a days, I just tell 'em I was the door gunner on the space shuttle AND I have the patch to prove it.

Dave

It's only exhausting until you start playing games with them. Tell them you were an astronaut or that you are an astrophysicist to see where they go with it. Then get more outrageous with each claim.
Yep, play games with them. When they realize your messing with them, it's price less.
