Exclamation Grilled Cheese with MAYO!?

Anyone ever make grilled cheese but instead of using butter they used mayonnaise? Apparently this is a thing.

I tried it and it works!! But is it better than butter? I don't think so, but it wasn't bad. It didn't have that wonderful buttery, kind of greasy taste that grilled cheese should have IMHO. But it worked, and the bread wasn't a greasy tasting so some might like it more.

Anyone tried it? I'm a "butter man" but anyone else a "mayo man" as it were?

Jay

I'd give it a try.
What's the worst that can happen? I'm out two slices of bread and a couple slices of Kraft's Crappiest.

I learned that trick from my Mom. She worked at a diner in a small mountain town during the Great Depression. You learned to make do with what you had. One day they were out of butter so the cook used mayo instead; everyone liked it so much they kept on doing it.

I think the egg yolk helps it get brown and crusty.

Mayo on the inside. Butter on the outside.

I always put mayo in the inside tho. Like the flavor engancement.

Actually, olive oil for the outside/frying pan works pretty well, too.

Best to use real cheese. And good bread.

Add some prosciutto... Fry it up.

Hmm. Gettin' hungry...

Fried prosciutto?? Now way jose!! Too good for that! Prosciutto is best enjoyed as is, not cooked.

Really, I have tried it, and it ends up just tasting like fried ham to me. It's a waste of prosciutto! YMMV.

Naw, ya put the prosciutto inside the sammich, so it gets in there with the mayo and melted cheese in between the two crispy fried bread slices...

I've never done grilled cheese any other way.

Slather the outside with mayo and put two slices of American Cheese between the two slices.

People really do it with butter?

I have always made toasted cheese sandwiches with butter or margarine on the outside, and mayonnaise added on the inside after it has been fried and the cheese has melted. I use only whole wheat bread. Usually accompanied by a bowl of cream of tomato soup and saltines. An ideal combination for a chilly winter day.

I put Cheeze-its in my tomato soup...okay, I am weird. And like crumbled potato chips on my tuna sandwich (mayo, no veggies, veggies are what FOOD eats).

I'm up for anything so the first try will be real mayo on the inside, followed by using mayo to replace the butter. But, I will not change the french bread and the minimum 3 slices of cheddar cheese. It ain't happening. hardcase60

What kind of cheese? I usually use cheddar, but swiss isn't bad either, especially with a slice or two of tomato on it too.

Get bold! Mix your cheeses.

Combine cheddar, brie, jack etc.

And not slices but hunks from cheese bricks.

And add a little tangy mustard on the inside.
And the mayo too, inside or outside.

I think a grilled cheese sandwich is the ultimate comfort food.

I have a panini maker so I can skip the butter/mayo if I want. I love grilled ham and cheese on sliced sourdough, especially with a fried over easy egg placed inside after grilling.

I also like grilled cheese sandwich served with tomato soup or sliced tomatoes inside are good too.

Types of cheese to use, they are all good, a favorite though is English Coastal white cheddar. It is nicely tangy with crunchy salt crystals. They sell a really good one at Trader Joes. Walmart sells chipotle cheddar and smoked mozzarella slices which are quite nice as well for something different.

I need to go grocery shopping today, cheese is always on my list!

I'm with Uncle Ed,
but along with the mustard are a lot of slices of red onion...
as a picker upper in the flavor department.

Gray Poupon can be substituted............

My mom uses Mayo on the inside butter on the outside. So much grease you can almost see through them when she's done.

I try to be healthy, toast the bread, put cheese in the middle and microwave to melt the cheese. No butter or Mayo used.

Not as tasty, but healthier.

Kind of defeats the purpose of the eats. Believe I'll pass.
I like to plop the untreated sandwich onto sizzling butter.
Not sure that will work with mayo.

Grilled Cheese are made with butter on the outside of the toast and mayo on the inside. There is NO OTHER LEGAL METHOD !!!!!

Must have three pieces of cheese....Pepper Jack, mozzarella and Swiss........Anything else is a chargeable offense in my neck of the woods. Add crispy fried bacon and thin sliced dill pickle and you have gone to samitch heaven.

Used to eat a lot of them when I was going to school on the GI bill and didn't have much grocery money. Big blocks of Kraft cheese and day old bread were cheap! Ate a lot of red beans and rice with them as well. Got bacon scraps from the local little store for flavor and a little meat protein. Cooked it all with bacon grease and thought I was living well.

I like using mayo, Wifey likes margarine. Try a grilled PB&J. Jif peanut butter and Smuckers grape jam on the inside and Kraft mayonnaise on the outside, fry until the bread is nice and crispy. You have to eat it with a knife and fork but they are "some kinda good."

Yes, fried like a toasted cheese sandwich. Always a debate about whether Elvis preferred white or wheat bread, chunky or regular PB, and if he liked his bananas sliced or mashed. I vote for wheat bread, chunky PB, and sliced bananas. Elvis was a true genius to invent that sandwich.

Butter here. Not much of a mayo fan. My wife dunks hers in ketchup after the grilling. I keep mine unadulterated.

While I have been served grilled cheese sandwiches with mayo on the outside my preference is to use neither mayo nor margarine or butter. I just give the pan a light spraying with cooking oil. That's all heavy wheat bread and good cheddar cheese need.

I can not eat all the calories I want. Butter and mayo are nearly completely gone from my diet.

Oh man! Ain't had one in years! Used to take toast, peanut butter, sliced ripe banana and drizzle some honey over it with the toast still warm... I need to make one soon! Of course Wal-Mart had nothing but bright green bananas so I'll have to wait till they ripen!

Darn it there isn't anything better than toasted cheese samitch dunked on tomato soup and a dill pickle on the side.
I never heard of using mayo instead of butter but mayo on the inside just sounds like yuck. Like they say don't knock it till ya tried it. And no I don't know who "They" are.

I just got a recipe for home made bread using coconut or almond flour so I just might have to make a loaf for a cheese samitch. I make the bowl of bread for breakfast all the time now. 2 eggs, 4 tbs almond flour, 1/2 tsp baking powder, 1 tbs flax seed, 4tbs of water, 1/2 tsp onion powder and garlic powder, 1 tbs heavy cream, pepper, 1/2 c shredded Colby jack cheese all mixed together then nuke for 4 minutes. You can leave out the flax seed if you want. Then just out of the microwave I put two slices of philly cheese to melt on top. HMMM it's good eating. I will have to use this to make toasted cheese samitch also.

(Sure does remind me of Dirty Harry though: "Ya gotta ask yerself. Do ya feel lucky, punk?!")

When I was a kid, we used to sprinkle sugar and cinnamon on the buttered bread of a grilled cheese sandwich. I haven't had one in a LONG time, but I remember that it used to taste heavenly.

Along with peanut butter and pickle sandwiches one of our standard brown bag school lunches was peanut butter and sliced banana. That tradition started before 1960 so I asked my now 93 year old mother if she'd ever heard peanut butter and banana attributed to Elvis. Her was answer was that's nonsense. She ate cold peanut butter and banana sandwiches before WW II. To her siblings that seldom ate anything they did not grow, hunt or catch the bananas were a flamboyant treat. Perhaps Elvis was the first to fry one but that's not likely.

By the way, all our sandwiches were made with mom's home made heavy whole wheat bread and nothing good was said about the white Wonder Bread eaten by most of the other kids. I still avoid white bread.

No doubt the Elvis banana and PB sandwich pre-dates Elvis, but he made it famous. I remember reading that his black female cook said he loved them and she made them for him around the clock. She said he liked his made with just "plain 'ol white bread." Whether she fried them for him or not I can't say, but I prefer them that way.

She may be the one that Elvis gave a handgun to for protection and wrote and signed a "permit" for her to carry it. I remember reading a story about that. I guess in Memphis an "Elvis Permit" would have been honored.

I call it the "BOMB" you won't eat too many there heavy.

Grill cheese. Cheese of your choice white or yellow American, real butter.
Fry bacon the way you like it.
Burger the way you like it.
Fried onions, sweet yellow onions sliced, ketchup, fried in olive oil, paperika, salt pepper, fry till caramelized.

Make a few you can't have just one they are so good.

OK so we have grilled cheese and mayo with bacon snuck in, so where is the broccoli? I'm thinking a broccoli/cheese sauce might be good spread over the finished sammich.
