Default Did an Oliver North "event".

Most of you older guys should understand my title.

Finely finished shredding a bunch of old paper work. I started with calendar year 1970 (year we were married) and worked up to calendar year 2007 and got rid of a large amount of old income tax paperwork. My accounted said to hold 7 years but I held a few more. Being we always used the long form there was a lot of receipts and documentation to support the returns sent in.

It was taking up a lot of space in a shelf in the basement that I will use for more important purposes. (Ammo storage)

I physically went through all paper work and anything that had sensitive info went into the crosscut shredder, innocent paper was ripped up and went in regular trash. (Most of it was shredded) Where is Fawn Hall when you need her?

Now going to do a shred every year after my taxes are done. Throw the oldest away so that I have 10 years in storage.

I have kept my tax records back into the 1980s, but about five years ago I actually did need to access some of the earlier records. For many years I have used TurboTax, and I keep only the PDF files of the IRS tax forms themselves as well as the TT working files. But I still keep hard copies of brokerage statements, 1099s, receipts, etc.

At this point all that early info is gone. My accountant said it was OK to do that. I'm long retired & getting a pension and been on SS for years so that will not be a problem. The last 5 or so years she has done all tax work electronically and she has all recent info available.

3 years ago we moved, I shredded from 1974 to 2010 in tax papers and cleaned out 4 kids papers the wife kept from school (52 school years worth)! National geographic from 1973 and American Rifleman from 1979 plus 400 paperbacks and 150 hardbacks Not counting the hundreds (maybe a 1000) of paperbacks I donated to servicemen overseas.

Ammo storage is always the priority!

Why mention Oliver North?? Personally I think he is a patriot and did what needed to be done. No need mention his name in this context IMO.

My sister passed away and I'm Executor of her estate. I'm going through boxes and boxes of papers containing: Old tax returns, credit card statements, bank statements, insurance policies, etc. Even though she has passed, I still think it is a good idea to destroy these types of documents which contain personal information.

I have discovered that my bank offers a shredding service, providing not too much is given to them at one time. Every week, I stop by and leave about a inch or so of paper which they will take and shed. Just a few more trips and all of the paper will be shredded. It sure saves wear and tear on my personal shredder. The amount I had to shred of would have put my shredder in the emergency ward!

I retain important paperwork five years, then shred. All very important paperwork is scanned to a jump drive, before it's shredded.

Same here ... either the wood stove or the fire pit outside. This thread reminds me that I should get rid of old bank statements and tax records too.

I was not "dissing" him. I figured most on here (a very astute bunch) would understand the shredding part, it is well know history!

I did a similar cleaning a couple years ago, and nearly burnt up my shredder. It got so hot it quit running. After about an hour of cooling off, I continued on. I do clean out my Utility bill, credit card statements every year, I keep current year plus 1 yr previous. Also my medical, one year plus current year and move anything I had out of pocket to my Tax file. I do have an excel spread sheet on any medical expense I keep as is incurred, and print out at year end for tax. Unfortunately the last few years I have been able to exceed the standard deduction so the tax records have come in handy.

I had a 92 year old relative pass away last year and had to get rid of eighteen 5-drawer file cabinets and four 2-drawer files - she kept just about everything that was money related! I briefly tried to shred some documents in a home style shredder but that was an impossibly slow process. Ultimately I hired a company that comes to your house/office using a truck with a built in shredder. They empty the drawers into a hamper, wheel it to the truck, dump the paper into a lift that carries the paper to the shredder intake and its done! It grinds up stapels, paper clips, binders, etc. I believe they charged about $275. I did go through each file folder in case she had squirrled away any cash (she didn't) but I did find a nice pocket knife!
