Camaro, Mustang, Challenger, and AMX were Pony cars. Pony cars were not muscle cars. They had a little less engine and were actually able to turn corners. My first was a 1976 Camaro Z28. Current is an 2001 Camaro SS.

Muscle cars had big engines in a full size chassis. Most of them could not negotiate a road course if the driver's life depended on it but in a straight line they would run away from most any thing. Both Ponys and Muscles are fun in their own way. My example was a 1972 Dodge Polara with a 440. My Platoon leader bought it when I got orders for Germany. Bought I 1978 El Camino Super Sport upon my return to the States. Not really a Muscle car but at the time is was close enough for government work.

Something weird started in the 90's though. I couldn't drive anywhere in it without being gawked at and hounded to sell it. People would pull next to me while driving and approach me while parked, or leave notes under the windshield wiper.

Looking back at it's 30 years of good, drama-free service to our family, I'd have to agree with you, it really did stand out well.
They were the nicest of the A bodies, Dusters Demons Valiants Darts and more shared internals. The biggest problem with them was rust where the roof met the quarter. Esp. the ones with a vinyl roof. Apparently the bondo they used to fill the seem was like a sponge.

I really liked the torsion bar front end.

Garaged!!! I hope whoever got yours kept it in the garage too.

I think hubby sold it while i was away on a job, because I have no memory of who got it. After the four kids grew up and the interior got refreshed, it looked new and still ran like new.

I'm sure he probably sold it to one of the strangers who used to chase it. Be nice if someone was still keeping it up.

I'm telling you, that all factory Pony would burn up the asphalt!

The Challenger/Cuda E Bodys were the best.

What combo is in your '74 and what's in the plan for the build?

"all it needs is every thing" I hear you.

Its a 318 car, no engine or tranny, but I have a built 440/727 for it. Needs quarters, trunk floor, some glass missing, but im building a shed for my charger to keep it inside and get the challenger in the shop soon. Originally yellow, has 3 extra coats of paint, blue, silver, now black. I figure Ill be drivin it in about 5 years give or take. May use 70-71 fenders and grill. Im sure it was somebodys parts car but it still has all the suspension and most of thr body less hood and a fender, lights. But I couldnt beat the price. $350 and its tagged in my name

To list a few other things, I drive a 77 New Yorker,(440 car), 77 D 100 with a 12 valve, it used to run mid 13s with the 440 going in the challenger.

My very 1st car that I ever owned was a 66 hipo poppy red coupe mustang. I had saved up 3 years worth of paper route money to buy it from a neighbor in Amarillo TX. After shelling out $600 in 1984 at the age of 12, I was the brand new owner of a broke down ford. My father and I worked on it until she ran. I never did get go drive her, for my father traded her for a trailer to move us to IN.
Since then, I have always been indulged in the automobile. Currently, I have a 66 Ford 7 Litre 4 speed, a 1970 Mercury Cougar, and a 1960 Edsel Villager.
I have a few loves in my life, old American iron, only trailing my family.

Currently I'm driving a 2010 Chrysler 300 Hemi! I want to tell you for the tank it is,,,it moves off the line!
Which takes me back to my high school days and a friend, still my best friend today had a car very similar to this with a 426 Wedge Hemi in it!

I always loved that car, always! and then he sold it behind my back, never once asking if I was interested!
Always have been a Mopar fan even though through my adult life I drove Oldsmobiles!

Now he keeps wanting me to sell him this! , that is currently setting covered in my garage.....86 Corvette Convert!

Default No such engine...

...as a '426 Wedge Hemi.'

The 426 had wedge shaped combustion chambers; the Hemi had hemispheric shaped combustion chambers.

Thus there cannot be an engine with both.

Nice car, regardless.

Be safe.

My mistake!
Quote:
Not to be confused with the 426 Hemi, the 426 cu in (7.0 L) RB was a wedge-head RB block with a 4.25 in (108 mm) bore. The 426 Wedge served as Chrysler's main performance engine until the introduction of the 426 Hemi. It was initially offered as the "non-catalogued" option S42 in Chryslers (the number of such produced is uncertain), offered with 373 or 385 bhp (278 or 287 kW) via a single 4-barrel carburetor (11.0 or 12.0:1 compression ratio, respectively), or 413 or 421 bhp (308 or 314 kW) via ram-inducted dual 4-barrel carburetors (with the same compression ratios).[6] For 1963, horsepower ratings would slightly increase (see below), and it became optional in B-bodied Dodges and Plymouths. After 1963, it would be used only in Dodges and Plymouths.[7]

Every Friday night during the summer we have a cruise night where everyone brings out their old iron (and new stuff too). Happens on 8th Street, long road with three lanes each direction and u turn lanes at each end. Parking lots full of watchers in lawn chairs etc.

Our annual official Cruise Weekend is just winding down now, but I can still hear some die hards out whipping their cars. I live about 10 blocks away. You hear someone wind out their car and its usually followed by sirens. The police are in attendance too, so the folks who act like idiots usually go home with a prize. The police are good but they still have a job to do.

We took the kids out and did a lap or two before parking at a 7-11 to sit down and spectate. A LOT of cool cars out tonight, everything from restored Model T's to all-out race cars that really aren't street cars anymore. There were a handful of cars that I saw running 9 seconds at the track last night cruising the strip.

Most of the folks participating behaved themselves and just cruised for the sake of cruising. Of course there were some that spent their evening trying to strut their stuff. I had an early Cuda pull up beside me and for about 4 blocks he wanted to throw down at every light. Same with a Chevy II that had a chute and a shutoff switch on the rear.

Wife asked me "What is that?"

I replied "Probably a good sign that I'd lose!"

Sadly, Cruise Weekend here is a reminder that summer is almost over, and that the Chevy will soon be parked for the winter. Maybe I'll be able to tinker on it some though, and get a few more things done to it for next year.

What kind of car do you own? I really like that show on Velocity channel, RESTORATION GARAGE. How far away is THE GUILD from your home?

This is the SS396 Chevelle that I sold my SS396 Camaro Pace Car to provide the funds for. This car was perfect in every respect. I wouldn't trade my marrage, kids or military service for either of these cars, but man, the memories of them are great!

I had a 1970 SS396 (L-78 402 cid) Nova like the one pictured. (Not mine.)

Before I took delivery I had all the SS insignia and the fake hood scoops removed, holes welded over and repainted. The tires were a bit wider than stock mounted on slotted chrome steel rims. The crossover exhausts emptied in the rear wheel wells and could not be easily seen.

3:55 Positraction rear axle driven by a wide ratio four speed with stock Hurst Competition Plus shifter. Gears 1–3 were equivalent to 4.11 at the rear wheels. Fourth gear was one to one. Variable ratio power steering with a thick foam 12-inch steering wheel. Special order suspension.

The L-78 motor was incredible, producing somewhere around 425 bhp, not the cautious 375 bhp Chevy 'claimed'. Although it seemed to want to keep on going, I never ran the engine beyond 7000 rpm. That was 70 mph in 1st gear and 140 mph in 4th gear. Power shifts were at lower rpm.

A great "Sleeper" set up by one of the best muscle car and general automotive mechanics in the country. I never used another mechanic since 1968 except his son—right up there with his dad— whom I still use to this day.

71 Dodge Demon 340, no pictures. I did the sleeper thing too, removed the stripes and the little demon 340 emblems, exhaust tips etc. Tweaked it a little. I'd drive around looking for GM or Ford small blocks to pick on. Problem was the old 340s had a very distinctive sound that I couldn't get rid of. It was fast but ate alternators like cheeseburgers. Sold it and bought a 71 Cutlass Supreme with the Rocket 350 in it. Had it till about 2004 when I grew tired of working on it. Some rap video had just come out with 71 and 72 Cutlasses bouncing up and down and a power company guy working on the poles in the neighborhood pulled up in my driveway and asked how much. I said cash talks so he came back and started counting out hundreds. Took what I got plus some money that I had rat holed and bought a 2005 GT Mustang. The retro Mustangs had just come out replacing the old fox bodied ones starting with the 2005 model, I thought they were gorgeous. This was the 10th 2005 GT sold by the dealership, people would stop me on the street just to look at it. I made this one my 50th birthday present to myself, still have it. It's not as fast as the 5.0s they sell now but it will smoke the tires real good and would have outrun the Demon or Cutlass I had by a good bit. You can tell it's a 2005 because that was the only year it was available mineral gray metallic. It's strictly my weekend or vacation car and I intend to own it till the doors fall off. Don't have to work on it much either, cranks up every time.
The first week I had it some guy in a 500 series BMW was giving me a bunch of **** on the expressway, just kept goosing his little German autobahnmobile, all he wound up seeing was my taillights.

You guys with your 2017 pony cars owe the 2005 Mustangs a good bit. They had stopped making Camaros and the Challengers weren't even a dream yet. The new Mustang was it and when this one was bought you had your choice of 6 cylinder or GT hardtop, the convertibles were still on the drawing board. If it had been a bust instead of the success it was you'd be in trucks or SUVs and the Camaros and Challengers would have still been memories.

Jim, my story exactly, almost! I got my '67 GTO in September of 1967 and paid $3,300. It was white with a black vinyl top and red interior. Same engine as yours and also a 4 speed. I only had it for 6 months as I got drafted in March of '68, but I still occasionally dream about that car. Later, in 1978, I bought a '78 Trans Am identical to the Smokey and the Bandit car - black with the gold eagle, T-top, and 4 speed. I still dream about that car too. Wish I had them both sitting out in front of the house right now.

This is my favorite so far!

Its not 60's or 70's "factory" but I'd say its era-inspired (with some modern parts thrown in).

Gen I small block with Clay Smith cam, MSD ignition, Dart heads and a new Edelbrock tunnel ram/500 carbs. Probably over-carbed.....

Muncie M22/Hurst shifter, 4.11 9", manual drum brakes, strong arm steering, homemade steel tilt front, Hooker fenderwell headers with 3" side dumps, Cal Trac bars, MT drag radials, chrome reverse steel wheels, etc.

Its loud, ornery and you can't eat a cheeseburger while steering with your knee. Out of respect for my neighbors I don't drive it before 8 am or after 10 pm.

On the to-do list: seat belts! and maybe disc brakes in the future.

That is just flat out cool! My fantasy car is a duplicate of the "Bob Falfa" hero car, '55 Chevy, from "American Graffiti" and later "Two Lane Blacktop". The closest I think I'll get is the model I built while recovering from my heart attack in 2003. LOL

RWSMITH if your 289 engine is pumping out 271HP then its a K code engine. I have had doz's of hotrods over the years and still have my 1972 GMC Blueglass pickup with around 450HP sitting in my driveway. Pics of it are in the LMC website under trucks of the world and from Canada. Its the 1st one listed in Artic White colour. I finally built a TH400 tranny as I melted 3-th350 tranny real quick. Used to spim the entire qt mile until I put a Auborn posi and Richmond 342's in the rear. The engine is Band Bd with double Camel Hump heads. Looks like a sleeper but its Not.

...I never could afford any genuine Detroit iron...when I was 14 I tried to talk my parents into a Hemi Road Runner...they bought a Plymouth Fury with a 318 instead...when I was 16 I talked my Dad into buying a 1947 CJ-2 Jeep that had a 283 Chevy in it...I soon rebuilt the 283 to Corvette specs...with the 5.38 axle gears and 2000 pound weight...it was very fast from stoplight to stoplight...

I like these cars. I was never really a Mustang guy but I did like what Ford did when they brought these out. As far as I'm concerned, its as close looking as anyone's got in the retro-styling game the manufacturers have been playing.

If I were to buy one, the one I want is the Bullitt edition (I think it was 08-09).

Sure the newer ones are faster, but I like the way these ones look. If going fast was all I wanted, I could have gone a lot faster for a lot less than I've got into my beat up 55. I work with a guy who races his 80 Dodge Colt hatchback with an Eagle Talon drivetrain. He would whip me if we lined up at the lights, he runs low 11 second quarter miles. But its sure fun to drive even if its not a competitive race car. I wouldn't trade him for all the tea in China.

2 Lane Blacktop is what got me wanting a 55, I watched it with my dad when I was 10, wanted one ever since. 28 years later with some help from my wife, I got one. But the first thing she told me when I pulled up in front of the house with it was "You are NOT painting that car primer grey!"

My kids dubbed it the Cherry Bomb that same day. I guess it stays red.

Not a car, not a '70 ~ '80, but I consider "The Beast" a muscle car.

Daily driver during the Spring, Summer, and Fall it's a joy to drive with old school power and torque.

I'm going to sneak a newer one in here too. 03 Marauder, I put 4.10 gears in it, a 3200 stall tc, stainless headers and 3" exhaust, and a custom tune. Pretty fun car but my wife doesn't like this one. Not huge power but I did beat a CTS with it. Not a CTS-V unfortunately, but on paper the Caddy should have eaten me for breakfast. I'll put it down as superior driving .

I would like to supercharge it but haven't decided what to do yet. In 5 years I've put maybe 1000 km on it, it mostly just sits in the shop.

It was always my understanding that a "muscle car" is an intermediate with a big block engine. No full size is a muscle car, no matter the engine. No pony car is a muscle car. Dean

My apologies for the horrible picture but it's all I got.

72 Dodge Dart Swinger. Sold it in the late 90's when I got into Harley's.
Came with every factory option EXCEPT a V8 and disk brakes!
The car still turned heads and ran like a champ. Was my daily driver for 4 or 5 years.

Muscle cars and guns - alright.

This is my 66 427 Corvette I did a body off restoration of about 20 years ago. It has a replacement 427 full of mostly L88 parts, newly built Muncie M22W rock crusher and 4.11 rear.

This is my 67 GTX 440/A727/3.55/full power/air. It's not really restored - just a lot of rebuilding. Luxury muscle.

This is my 66 replica Cobra I built from an ERA unit. Full independent suspension, stroked 428 with lots of 427 parts and 485 HP/530 torque, Toploader 4-speed and as much authentic-type stuff as I could put on it. It was built as a street roadster model with no rollbar, no hood scope and undercar exhaust.

And although it's not an antique yet, this is my go-to-Lowes special, a 03 Lightning with 16k miles, 4 lb pulley, custom tune, cat back and cold air intake. Pretty strong truck.
