Do you ever wish you were smarter?
Not a day goes by that my own "mental limitations" amaze me. I'm not talking rocket science or ******* physics. Everyday stuff. A couple recent examples: 1) I have new blood pressure medication and must take a BP reading at least once daily. I have an "old school" cuff, A Marshall that has a "Gimbels" (been out of business 40 years) price tag on it. Every time I use it I need my wife to get it tight so I get a good read. Pull it off when done, I guess I like the velcro sound. My wife sez "Why don't you just leave it attached and slide it down your arm when done so next time it's just right?" "Aren't you the smarty pants around here!" Doh; that never entered my mind. 2) My lawn mower been giving me fits, just won't run up to speed. I gapped the plug, worked one time. Changed the plug several times, worked one time. Putt-putt-putt, smoking and coughing. Already using non-ethanol from the Wawa. Air filter bright green like new. I need the mower to work when I have a chance to work so I can't screw around. Head over to Home Depot and buy a new SP Toro on sale for $329. So while I'm finishing the grass with this new "less than optimal(Briggs and Stratton) device" I'm thinking "seems like the choke is stuck. Looked around the garage and spied a can of WD 40. Popped off the air filter and sprayed a liberal amount directly into the intake. One pull and that Honda spewed a giant puff of white smoke and ran so fast I could hardly keep up. If'n I was smarter and tried the WD before the Home Depot, I'd have saved $400. At least I have a spare now. I have dozens more of these stories. When I was a boy, the school told me my IQ was 127. Like most . gov I'm sure they overestimated by at least 50%. Joe

That name is a blast from the past. I was kind of "attached" to Gimbels NYC when they closed the doors in 1986. My office window at Gibbs and Cox was next to the skywalk that connected to Gimbels over 32nd St. It was a sad day to see that page in history get turned.
P.S. Don't worry about your shortcomings sneaking up on you. Someone here will point them out to you.

Paul, I had a 140 IQ. The optimum word being "had".
After chemo and radiation to my skull, my memory is like a filter feeder that grabs what floats by and my math skills have deteriorated. It's not fun but I am blessed that it is not worse.
We think of Candi a lot.

At 75 I do not need to be smarter. I just need to be wiser. There is a difference.

I'm old and have learned three important things.
1. "don't do things that hurt."
2. "when you find something that makes you smile, do it again."
3. "The only person you have to please looks at you every morning in the mirror... make him happy."
If you are happy what else is there?

I was in a study while in collage, I was forty then. The group that conducted the study told me I had a pretty high IQ, but didn't tell me what it was. They did say IQ isn't as important as being able to use what you learn and function in society. I have known some really smart people and they could tell you all about a subject or how to do a job but being able to do the work they were lost.
I have been able find ways of doing things when others can't, I believe that what we see depends on where we stand or what we here depends on how we listen.
We all have different gifts that we bring to the table, not good or bad just different.

I'm happy with my intelligence, but I wish my memory was better. Kind of like Spencer Reed on Criminal Minds.

Exactly. This world is made up of 99.999% of what I don't know I don't know. I'm almost 64 and I know 1,000X less than I did at 18. By the time I'm dead I'll be one dumb sum*****. Joe

From my experience:
Intelligence, Wisdom, and Common Sense are three completely different attributes.
We all have varying amounts of each.
My wife wishes she had my intelligence (which she obviously over-estimates!), while I wish I had her wisdom and common sense!

I'm just smart enough to realize that I'm not very smart. I'm OK with that. If I were any smarter I'd have to act make a real effort to act my age, which is something I've been avoiding for quite a few years, now.

Me???? I guess I never really got smart....I learned at a early age when my mother would ask? "Who broke that"? Me..."I don't know"!!!
My dad would ask "Who was that smoking behind the shed"? "I don't know"!!!

AMEN! When I took the test in the 4th grade they said my IQ was 148 but it's been all downhill from there.
Unfortunately (or fortunately - depending on the situation at hand) I seem to remember about 3/4 of everything I've ever read - and I've always been a big reader.
That was great in school, and it's great when making casual conversation. I know a little bit about almost anything you care to discuss. But while my knowledge may be a mile wide it is only an inch deep. I don't know a whole bunch about much of any one thing.
Although I can remember a bazillion useless pointless trivial facts that I've read or picked up along the way, I can't seem to remember a lot of things that have practical day-to-day value. Like appointments, or where i put stuff.

I was tested in college for fun. IQ was supposedly 153. That's fairly high, I think. Definitely not a genius, though. Trust me on that.
I was promptly invited to join MENSA. I politely declined. I'm not a joiner. The only club I'm a member of is the gun club, and I don't have to go to any meetings unless I want to. I don't.
My wife didn't graduate high school due to a language barrier. She had moved here from Cuba and was just learning English. In some ways she is smarter than I am. I have no idea what her IQ is, but she is very bright.

I wish I was like my dad. When I was in my early teens he was dumber than a box of rocks, as I aged he got a whole lot smarter.
Unfortunately I didn't follow that pattern. I was real smart in my teens, now I'm far from it (actually both).

HOW DUMB IS SHE?
This may sound like an old NON PC Polish joke, but My sister the only college grad of us kids at the time, asked for help getting her lawn mower in the car so she could bring it to the gas station & gas it up. More IQ is way down on my wish list.

I've developed a sense of knowing when it's a good time to leave a situation. Only screwed that up a couple of times when I thought I was indestructible when I was much younger. The last time I barely beat the process of natural selection. Short term memory not much now, but I'm proud of my white hair.

I can't believe how stupid my dad was when I was 18. I also couldn't believe how much smarter he had gotten by the time I turned 21.
Anyone else ever hear that growing up?

No I don't. I wish I were dumber. So dumb, in fact, that I had no understanding of what is going on in the world.
I once went on a "news fast". No television, no radio, no newspaper. For two months I had no idea what was going on in the world. At work, I stayed out of the break room so that I wouldn't accidentally overhear any conversations regarding current events.
I slept better and worried less.

I once went on a "news fast". No television, no radio, no newspaper. For two months I had no idea what was going on in the world. At work, I stayed out of the break room so that I wouldn't accidentally overhear any conversations regarding current events.
I slept better and worried less.

I am on a permanent near "news fast". I don't watch TV News, or listen to Radio News, or read the local fish-wrapper. I get my news from a few feeds off the 'net - because I don't need the MSM telling me what to think. The slant of what passes for news reporting these days raises my blood pressure too much.

There are a lot of people smarter than I am and who do things better than me. I don’t let that get me down. When I do something badly, I think of all the people who probably would have done it even worse. I concentrate on other people’s shortcomings and compare myself with the worst and forget about the smartest and best.

When you're 7 you think your dad is the smartest man in the world.
When you're 14 you think your dad is just a stupid old man.
When you're 21 you come to realization that he's just a man, much like so many other men.

The way one spray fixed a mower I was struggling with for 2 seasons is mainly what got this thread started. I was certain it was an ignition problem, and past a certain point, I am so invested I will not consider another option. That is dumb (maybe insane, doing the same thing-changing sparkplugs over and over) expecting it to work "this time." Joe

We are just...
We are just too smart to be of any use to anybody. I get locked into trying to do things one way, when there is a simple trick that gets the job done just like that.

Nope...and I really don't give a darn what my IQ is or isn't. Doesn't matter. What matters most to me is that, for some reason, my grandchildren think I'm the smartest man in the world, and by golly, I ain't gonna tell 'em no different!

Smarter? Sure; but more wisdom, please. Age has acquainted me with my limitations, which thankfully keeps me out of endeavors which require more wisdom than I have. Seeing as how I've eluded marriage #3 so far, that seems to be working.
