Anyone tried Pusser's navy rum?



It is about the best rum I have ever had. A lot of flavor to be sure. They bought the recipe and rights to make the navy rum that was issued to the Royal Navy till the 1970s. I tried it with some cold water and a dash of nutmeg and cinnamon, to make a pirate drink called "bumbo" and it's really good!!

One to try if you like rum. I know some on here like alcohol and some don't, but if you're the former check this one out.

I'll give it a go-maybe. Problem with rums is that I either really like them or really hate them and the only way to find out is to try some which means buying a whole bottle. (Unlike single malt-some are better than others but the worst is still pretty damn good). I would love to see the high end makers of various spirits bottle them in 1.5 oz or 50ml size for tasting purposes. That would be a fun way to broaden one's horizons while at the same time be good for the bottler.

I am thinking of getting a bottle of the 15yr old Pusser's.

Sounds tasty but it seems it would be hard to drink out of a bumbo.

Having spent many cruise days in the Caribbean, Pusser's is always a good one.

If you like the darker type with a little more molasses, try Cruzan Black Strap - on ice with a twist of lime if preferred.

Pussers is the RN rum but it is diluted for the local markets. Usually in hte RN it was around 140 proof and needed to be diluted. If you want a good single malt, try to find Edradour, from the smallest distillery in Scotland and look for a cask strength 25 year old. Manna from Heaven and do not use ice!!! Dave_n

Watered down rum is grog.

Good in a tall glass with soda water and a lime squeeze, maybe a dash or two of bitters.

At that strength, it would have been a fire hazard on wooden ships!

Or just about. Coincidentally (?), the TSA prohibits alcohol with more than 140 proof (70% ABV) on airplanes.

Drank many a PK on a charter catamaran and at the Soggy Dollar in the BVI............where it was invented........

Now drink a few Bushwhackers and you'll want the Painkiller

Spent several years in the islands and enjoyed Pussers in the BVI.

From what I've read about the British Navy in the 18th century rum was about the only thing that got people to enlist. They had such a large Navy they couldn't find enough sailors. They solved that problem by boarding American merchant ships on he high seas and drafted American sailors into British Naval service. That led to the war of 1812 and proved to the new country that they needed a formidable Navy.

I like rum in the winter. I'll have to give that one a go. I've seen it in Costco.

In the RCN one would receive the tot in a mug and drink it down. An option was to buy a bottle of coca cola, drink half the coke and pour the tot in the bottle. To keep the line moving, one did not have to drink the whole bottle in front coxswain so the cap was replaced and the bottled stowed in ones locker. The process was repeated for two or three days, then one had a good time after watch whilst ones mates covered for him.
