Default CADENCE SONGS

Did you sing cadence songs when marching in the military?
Do you remember a favorite or two?
For example: GI beans and GI gravy,
Gee I wish I'd joined the Navy.
Or: There's a place I want to go
and it's back in Idaho.
Or: Lift your hat and show your curls
we are marching by the girls.
Most of the ones I remember would probably violate a rule.

How about you?

I've got six pence,
Jolly, jolly sixpence ,
I've got sixpence ,
To last me all my life!
We got a lot of songs from the Brits, including a bunch not allowed here!

C130 rolling down the strip
Airborne daddy going to take a trip
Stand up, hook up, shuffle to the door
Jump on out and count to four
If my chute opens wide
I'll be landing by your side
If my chute don't open round
I'll be the first Ranger on the ground
Sound off

Gory, gory, what a helluva way to die,
Gory, gory what a helluva way to die,
Gory, gory, what a helluva way to die,
and he ain't gonna jump no more...

In boot camp.

Some guys want a BAR
I just want a candy bar
Never knew I could run so far
I still would rather go by car

My gals name is Cindy Lou
Cindy I am think of you
See you when I close my eyes
Too damn tired for it to rise

I like girls with blue eyes
Eyes as bright as blue skies
Not too many of them around
But if you look they can be found

Ok That is it for me. Any other I post will get the post deleted or merit an infraction.

Oh, so many I remember, and like others have noted, they would get me in big trouble here.

One of my favorites was the 3rd chorus(?) of "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" - the Ft. Sam Houston, Basic Medic (91-B) school version:

Behind the door her daddy kept a shotgun
He kept it in the springtime in the merry month of May
and if you asked him why the heck he kept it
He kept it cause that Medic who was far, far away
Far away!
Far away!
He kept it cause that Medic who was far, far away.

Regards,

Dave

Two old ladies lying in bed...
One rolled over to the other and said...
"I wanna be an Airborne Ranger!"...
"Live a life of guts and danger"...
"I'm gonna cut off all my hair"...
"So I can wrestle a grizzly bear"...
(I don't remember the rest of it)

Went to jump school at Benning in July 1969, the song was:

I want to be an Airborne Ranger
I want to live a life of danger
I want to go to Viet Nam
I want to get me a Charlie Cong
Here we go , here we go
All the way, all the way
Airborne, airborne
Everyday, everyday

The other one I remember was: C-130 going down the strip
Airborne Daddy gone take a little trip
Stand-up, hook-up, shuffle to the door
Jump right out and count to four

If that main don't open wide
I got another one by my side
If that one should fail me too
Look out below, I'm coming thru

If I die on the old drop zone
Box me up and ship me home
Pin my wings upon my chest
And bury me in the leaning rest

I was the only Navy in my class but there were about a dozen ANGLICO Marines. Caught the usual flack.

Just remembered another one which the jump master sang out whenever we passed a non-parachutist.

On the right, on the right
Dirty leg, dirty leg
Can't run, can't run
Can't fight, can't fight
No good, no good

Since we did more drinking than we did marching,
We had a bunch of drinking songs.
Had a Squadron Commander who wanted all of them written down and put into a book.
So just The space ship guy - he said Make it so!

I remember we had some pretty raunchy ones in ROTC high school. Counted off when no faculty officers nearby although one or two didn't mind.

What? I never even saw anybody march like that, let alone do it myself.
Unless there was a different level of marching in the Airborne, and I mean really different, that's purely Hollywood.

Man, some of those bring back the memories.

Oh Jody boy, riding down the avenue
Six more weeks and I'll be through
I'll be glad and so will you
Oh Jody boy, riding in his Cadillac
Ain't no use in looking back
You're mother was there when you left, your right
You're father was there when you left, your right
Jody was there when you left, your right

I don't know but I been told
Something something mighty cold

Late at night while you're sleepin
Charlie Cong comes a creepin
around

Stand up, hook up
Shuffle to the door
Jump right out
and count to four

Re up and buy a brand new car
Re up show what a fool you are

This was not appropriate when the first sergeant was around with his new Olds Tornado.

Your left, your left, your left, your right your left.
I had a good home but I left,
You’ll never get home on your left,
You had a good wife but she left.

Don't know if it's the Chemo Brain or I'm just forgetful, but all I can recall are a few about Jody. And you already know we can't post most of those.

The one I can't figure out is the one posted by old tanker-about the bad ending for the bird.

If anyone knows that one, please post or, if it is one that would be inappropriate, please PM me with the lyrics.

Bob

Repeat above
That's one I remember my dad used on us kids when he used to have us practice fire drills at home. He also used a thunder whistle. We kids got tired of his thunder whistle--took it while he was at work one-time,and buried it somewhere down the alley never to be found again.

...this may be it...

A little bird with a yellow bill
Was sitting on my window sill
I lured him in with a piece of bread
And then i smashed his little head

In fourteen hundred and ninety two,

A Diego from Marsilli

Was walking thru the streets o' Spain, sellin' hot tamales.

He walked right up to the Queen o' Spain,

demanding ships & cargo.

He said he'd be a son of a ____ if he didn't bring back Chicago!

He said the world was round-o,
He said it could be found-o,

That hypothetical, _______ son of a _____ Columbo!

Somebody else can add the verses about Pegleg Morgan
and the cabin boy.
