Was there something special about the photograph? Like maybe it was autographed or something?

I mean, images of Fess Parker as Daniel Boone are available on the Internet. Hundreds of 'em.

Its my original copy and the one and only copy that the Chicago Tribune used in 1964 when the show first premiered ( premier episode) and then it was used again in 1970 when it was in rerun. I had the photo digitally restored and the guy who did it did an amazing job.

The real Daniel was a fascinating man that lead a life of extraordinary adventures. He had many rifles. Rifles at that time were like pocket knives. They seldom survives for more than a few years. Indians were always taking them, getting lost from overturned canoes, ect. Like many men that live daily with inanimate object, Daniel named at least one of his rifles. He named it "Tick Licker". The caliber is in dispute as their was no official way of measuring in those times and places but he used it to kill buffalo so it was assumed to be of large caliber. In the fight with the Indians that killed his son Israel standing next to him,, he took and extra long fowling piece to the fight in his own words. He liked it because as he described it, he could use a handful of powder, a handful of shot and several balls at a time. WOW not loaded to SAMMI. specifications.

Richard sent it as a PDF file, I can open it but cant copy it. Also once I forward the email once (which I already did) the file seems to disappear. I cant seem to recover the email from my gmail account no matter what device I use.

Forgot to mention, Richard digitally cleaned up my photo-taking out printers instructions-scratches etc--so I could use the photo (once I get him to make me a hard copy) so I can get it printed to a shirt or whatever. I'm going to have him clean up a few other stills for me as well-one Sean Connery still from: A Bridge too Far--aiming a 1911 ,45 before shooting a German through a window--which will be just him and nothing else in image--and a similar image of James Caan same movie--where he's aiming his .45-at the surgeon who says his Captain is dead--a Roger Moore Wild geese pic--and maybe a couple others. Richard does excellent (but expensive) work restoring photos.

Ill see if my friend in England still has the mail and can send it back or if I can access my gmail elsewhere and find the mail again? PM me and ill send you my gmail acct and will send you what I still as-maybe you can get it to work? He sent me 2-3 mails. One has a light, dark and a best version-the othe has different sizes, and another shows off the above image and other images he restored.

Are his guns on the California permitted list?

Did he wait the required time before taking possession?

I'm wondering if the real Daniel Boone wore tailored skinny jeans?

I'm thinking not.

Restoring pictures is not too difficult if you have something like Photoshop to work with (and there are cheaper software options to Photoshop). I have cleaned up many very old badly damaged photos, some even from the 19th century, so they look (sort of) like new. It just takes a little patience and practice to learn the tricks.

Portraits, yes. Pictures, very doubtful. Photography began around 1800 and Boone didn't die until 1820, but commercial photography didn't come into being until the late 1830's.

I dunno what stuff Richard uses but, he does work restoring for museums-just did work (or still is doing work restoring) for the Art Museum of Corpus Christi and his work is fantastic to say the least. I aim to have more made when affordable?

Just sketches, inks, paintings and peoples renditions of what he looked like-no actual photos or tin or deguerre types of him exist. Too early were D.B's years.

My most challenging restoration involved some 5x7 glass plate negatives. I don't know their age, but probably from the early 1900s. They were badly overexposed and making contact prints of them by normal photographic methods wasn't very successful, even using the highest contrast paper available. I ended up scanning them using trial and error settings and back lighting, and finally got some recognizable images. I then made positive print files. After several hours work with Photoshop on the positives, I finally got some reasonably acceptable images, and then cleaned up all of the spots, cracks, and other blemishes. I remember spending close to a full day doing both of them. I still have the image files somewhere, but I would have to look hard to find them, as it was maybe 10 years ago I did that project. They weren't particularly interesting, just some family pictures of my wife's long-dead relatives standing outside the old homestead in Alabama, but they were the only images available. I also did a series of tintypes, the subject matter on those was quite a bit easier to work with than the glass negatives, but the physical damage was more extensive. They looked more theatrical, like pictures taken of actors during a play.

According to his biography, there is only one likeness of Daniel and that was of him as an old man. Even though photography did not come about for earnest till the Civil War, there are actual photographs of 9 Revolutionary soldiers taken around 1860 and the soldiers were all or near 100 years old.

Dixie Gun Works has a print of Daniel Boone that has been "de-aged", taken from the portrait of him as an old man.

Dixie Gun Works muzzleloading, blackpowder and rare antique gun supplies.

Loading Buck and Ball was somewhat common in the era. Buckshot and round ball. The gunsmiths also made the mold that fitted your rifle as tooling would wear and the gun they built later would be different than todays.

"Around 1800" is a bit too early. The very first known photo of a human ever was from 1838, showing the famous unknown man having his shoes shined in Paris, produced by Louis Daguerre. That guy was the only person in the scene who stood still long enough for his image to record. The shoeshiner is also discernible, bur less distinct since he was moving.

I just looked up who took the first photographic portrait, of a human face. Turns out that happened a year later, a self portrait of a British guy named Robert Cornelius in 1839.

So Daniel Boone, who died in 1820, missed his chance by about 20 years.

From Wikipedia:

Quote:
The history of photography has roots in remote antiquity with the discovery of two critical principles, that of the camera obscura (darkened or obscured room or chamber) and the fact that some substances are visibly altered by exposure to light, as discovered by observation. As far as is known, nobody thought of bringing these two phenomena together to capture camera images in permanent form until around 1800, when Thomas Wedgwood made the first reliably documented, although unsuccessful attempt. In the mid-1820s, Nicéphore Niépce succeeded, but several days of exposure in the camera were required and the earliest results were very crude.
I suspect the reason for portraits trailing object photography was the time required to sit still, which I believe ran into minutes. Buildings on the other hand don't ordinarily move.

What were the family names? I had ancestors and other relatives from Alabama and out in Texas about 1910. I am always looking for: Hampton, Hendrix, Hendricks, Peek

Thanks,

Buck and ball was standard fare for military for many years. This was George Washington's favorite load during the revolution. This military load was for smooth bore muskets and consisted of @50 grains of powder, one ball slightly smaller than the bore and 3 large buckshot. I gave away the book about Daniel to a relative of his so I can only give a close estimate of what the book stated. Daniel took his extra long fowling piece and loaded it with a handful of powder, a large handful of large shot and up to 15 balls at each loading. Wow just wow. I will shoot about anything with a trigger but doubt I would pull the trigger on that gun.
