Default Telling a child about the birds and bees.

This weekend my middle daughter and her family visited. They don’t come often so it was a pleasure to spend time with my granddaughter.

My seven-year-old granddaughter wanted to see the cows so we went for a walk. Out in the pasture a bull just happened to be mounting a heifer. She asked what those cows were doing.

“They’re making a new cow.” I replied.

My granddaughter looked puzzled and continued to ask questions. So finally, in the most general and gentle terms, I explained what was happening, just like I had done with my own kids. She seemed satisfied with the explanation and we continued on.

Back at the house, she tells my daughter, “Mom, I saw two cows making another cow and grandpa told me how it works.”

My daughter gave me the eye and later took me aside. “I wish you hadn’t done that.” she says.

“Sally Sue”, I say, “you and your sisters knew all about the birds and bees by the time you went off to grade school.”

“That’s true, but farm kids grow up fast. Your granddaughter is not a farm girl and I think that kind of information should be left for later. I don’t want her growing up too fast.” She says.

My daughter wasn’t angry only concerned that it was too much information too soon.

I sucked it up and apologized. I don’t know anymore when the right time is to explain to the new generation of kids the facts of life but it seems to be different for city folks.

Sounds like you found the perfect time and perfect situation!

My daughter in law tends to infantalize my granddaughter too.

Seems like moms now days have a hard time letting their daughters grow up.

Well, Jinglebob, for what it's worth, I think you did the right thing, both by answering your grandaughter's question, and then by apologizing to your daughter when she objected.

No harm done, and probably some good.

Good job all around.

If kids are asking questions they will find answers, better to give them the correct answer. They are very aware and the exposure in the media is constant.

Back in pre Katrina days when there was a Harbor in New Orleans the wife and I were sitting on the boat feeding the ducks. One particularly aggressive male was trying to mount a female and kept pushing her down in the water. My wife remarked that I needed to do something as that duck was trying to drown the other duck. I looked at her with that " you gotta be kidding" look. She realized what they were doing and I've never seen a redder face on anyone . I've never told this story so y'all keep it to yourselves....

When we were teenagers, several of us were playing cards at a friend's house, when his little brother came running in yelling: "Mama, Mama!!!! the beetle hounds (beagles) are stuck together!!!!!!!"

His nickname will always be beetlehound.

I (a only child born mid 40s) came along late in my parents life and to be blunt about it they were both kind of prudish. Heck in that era (late 50s) condoms were kept hidden behind the counter and if the pharmacist though you were too young would not sell you any!

Never had the "talk", but did have a few sort of mumbled things said about "when you are a adult" With that said I learned about that subject by listening to older boys talk and having a couple "friendly" girls to practice with. Needless to say I was a good learner and practiced as often as I could.

With my own kids, both boys we did have the talk. (FWIW I'm far from being a prude!) I also went a bit farther by giving them a chance to ask question about the subject any time they wanted to know something.

They were told to come to me for the truth as out with your friends no telling what you would hear., Use any words you have too, to convey your question, no repercussions for bad words.

Go to admit they came up with some rather interesting questions, but I gave the good answers. I had told them if you can ask it I will answer it.

If she grew up on a farm, she should have known what would happen when she brought her kids there.

For some reason, people seem to get less intelligent the closer you pile them together.

I guess some feel if you tell them about the birds and bees, they'll use that information to get into trouble. 50 years ago, I took four years of algebra, calculus and geometry. Haven't used it yet. Telling a child about the birds and bees.

Never too early to talk about the bird n' bees. It can be dangerous for kids that don't know, much like introducing them to alcohol as soon as you can so that it looses the mystique and they aren't drawn to it.

I was never told till I was 14yo. There was a lambs protection floating in the water. The old man told me what it was I already knew.

My youngest son (15yo) was at that age were he might get into trouble. I told him they like yxxxx bxxx in jail. We were watching a movie a week later I didn't know it but it had a part in jail. The kid turned to me and said your weren't kidding. I told the boy I'd never lie to him.

The self help sections of larger bookstores have very useful, illustrated books about this. I wish that had been so when I was young.

My mother was a Baptist church staffer (youth minister) before she became a teacher and she and Father never told me much about that. Too embarrassed.

An uncle subscribed to, Playboy. I found it very useful, although I never dated any girls who had staples in their navels. Otherwise, they looked just like the ones in the magazine, so I knew what the parts looked like before I actually saw them.

Out in the field one horse was mounting another horse and the grandchild asked the Grandfather, "What are they doing?"

The Grandfather was caught off-guard and said, "...ummm, well, the horse in the back has hurt his leg and so the horse in the front is just helping him to get back to the barn."

The child says... "oh... yeah, isn't that just how it is! You try to help someone and you just end up getting screwed!"

I can relate, I have a 11 yo grand daughter that loves to hang with grandpa
Back when she was just a toddler she would be with me while here on the farm

An since we have no modern facility's here on the farm, when she needed to pee i would tell her to just pull down her pants squat and pee.

Problem solved until one day her mama saw here squat in there fancy subdivision yard.

After questioning the girl and finding out grandaddy had told her it was alright.
Her mama pointed out the fact very plainly to her granddad that little girls don't squat and pee
