Water well ballpark estimate
I'm sure there's some experts in this field here, as I've gotten help from them before.
I'm trying to make as many things around here good for a long time as I can before it's too late. My first and probably most expensive, is to get my well reliable and functioning well. It works pretty well now, but I believe the casing is shot, as all you can see from above looks like a dirt hole in the ground. I want to have the casing replaced. It was dug in about 1950 I believe. Also think it was around 60 feet deep. I've had to pull the jet up couple times due to silt. I have water at 14 feet, the old casing looks to be 6 inches, maybe 8.
So, what's your best guess what this is likely to cost me? All the hardware is fairly recent, so maybe all I need is new plastic piping down to the jet and up.

You can't just replace your casing you will need a new well
Cost of wells vary due to your location and depth of your aquifer I just put a new well in about 5 years ago its 225 ft deep I'm in our area aquifer it's a 4 inch casing with a 2 horsepower submerged pump and motor with 2 pressure tanks total cost was $4575.00 but I suppy water for 10 mobile homes and because its a Community type well I keep a spare pump and motor to change out if needed
I built a rig so I can pull my pump out by my self and a friend because each section of pipe is 20 ft long
If your only needing water for one house consult with a local well driller about how deep you need to go and the size your pump should be your current setup sounds like a shallow well that is not into an aquifer but again check with a local driller he will know about your area and water quality

Wow, cost does vary by where you live, I had one drilled about five years ago also. Mine is 100 feet deep, four inch plastic casing, one horse power four inch jet pump at 66 feet. Cost was $8500. Phantomcycle you got a good well driller stay on his good side.

I had to replace the well before I could sell my house in MD. The new well was about 300 feet deep and it was just under $10,000 when it was all said and done.
As far as I was concerned, the price was cheap because I was leaving the People's Republic of Maryland for good!

I have known of wells just having the casing replaced , in Az it was common . So unless your county / state reg's say otherwise I would first look into it . Drilling a new well would be the last alternative .

If you had a 6" casing that you think is shot, it is no problem to drop a 5" down it.

Interesting replies. I spent 36 years in the industry. I have seen people pour thousands of dollars in a lost cause. If you can get a new water supply for less than $5,000 do it. Wells are like anything, the wear out over the years. If a new 60' well cost $5,000 and lasts 30 years, the cost would be @$13 a month or 50 cents a day. Also old well construction was far from modern standards. The things I have seen in old wells range from horse droppings to many dead animals and insects. Newer is better in this situation.

I suppose it depends on area. 5-8K out here depending upon depth and ground composition. My last property was around 6700 for just under 800 feet. Out here they range from 400-1,200 ft.

I too spent 35 yrs. in this business.I agree, get a new well. You will be suprised what is down your old well if there is no casing at the top. I,like 30-30'have bailed dead animals out of wells and puked on the ground. Can't think of drinking out of a bad constructed well. Get new and be done with it.My 2 cents as a retired"well digger".Always hated being called a digger.
