Default Hear Impaired and Turn Signals

Due to have a hearing problem I just cannot hear the relay in my turn signal and sometimes leave it blinking until my wife points it out to me.Does someone make a higher viscosity blinker fluid or does someone make a relay that is somewhat louder?
Oh by the way ,right now hearing aids are out of the question!

You will blend right in. If you know you have this issue, a simple visual/manual check should solve it, assuming your vision is OK. My Grandma was VERY hard of hearing, her driving partner was blind. So many bigger issues on the road today. (texting/impaired/aggressive/etc) Dad taught me to expect the other driver to do the worst possible thing & you won't be disappointed.

I could wire up an electrical coil to your seat to "remind" you.

If you're over about sixty years old society pretty much expects you to drive around with a blinker on all of the time anyways. I wouldn't worry about it.

Does anyone remember the pre-turn auto signal days when
you were supposed to use arm signals?

I think bicyclers are supposed to use arm signals these days.

I doubt it. Spark plug coil, timed to go on after a minute's worth of blinking. Somewhere around 40,000 volts but very little amperage.

I knew a taxi driver that had an old Ford magneto wired up under the rear seat to use in the event someone ever tried to rob him. Never heard if he had to use it or not.

I remember my uncle telling me that the only thing you can be sure of when you see a woman driver giving a hand signal...is that the window is down!

My MG parts guy like to tell about when he lived in San Francisco in the '70s and his daily driver was a 1960 MGA(that he still has).

MGAs have a "pull" knob for the starter and not a key position. He says that he used to put the HT lead from the coil to the starter knob at night. Once or twice, he heard a yell from someone trying to steal the car .

Been guilty of this a couple of times on my big truck. From what I see on the highways, no one looks at instrument panels anymore if they use the signals at all.

I have to admit I like the system for the vital signs on big trucks. You have a gauge, a warning light and a really loud and annoying buzzer if you aren't paying attention to the gauges and idiot lights.

Driver training was long ago, but it appears they don't teach the use of mirrors or turn signals, checking the instrument panel or anticipation of other drivers probable actions anymore. Not to mention courtesy. There's an incident engraved on my memory: I was approaching a red traffic light at 0500 and was slowing trying to time the light and noticed a car in the far left hand turn lane (2 left turn lanes, 2 lanes for straight ahead and 1 right turn lane-I was in the right hand straight ahead lane) with the signal on. The light turned green, I accelerated, shifted up and watched the car (woman driver) turn right across 4 lanes of traffic without regard for my oncoming truck. I didn't even have time to lift my right foot. Yeah, she made it without getting killed, but if her timing had been just a wee bit off, it would have been a fatality.

I have the same problem as the OP, and developed the habit of manually turning the signal off. It is also what you had to do on the motorcycles I learned to ride on.

It’s pretty simple. You turn it on, you turn it off.

If it really is a problem you may want to keep your hand on the lever.

You can ramp up the sound with a hearing amplifier which is not a hearing aid. Just keep it in the car and use when driving. They come in all shapes and sizes and with wide range of costs. There are some pretty inexpensive but good ones out there. You only need it for one ear.

The link takes you Amazon where you can buy one for $37. You can search internet for Hearing Amplfier too

Good suggestion. I need hearing aids in both ears. 30 years of booms and bangs before they gave earplugs. I got two aids from the VA. Cheapest things money can buy and low quality. But they are much better than nothing and they are free.

Eventually I bought a set of higher quality aids a Cotsco for $1800, about 30% less expensive than a private practitioner. They work great.

I am not sure if car blinkers are universal anymore like they use to be but you can certainly call the Dealer's Service Dept, and ask. Google "loud blinker for car" and see what you find. Maybe they actually do make louder ones. I know every car's blinker is different. My Wife's hearing is so good she is actually sensitive to them and won't buy a car with really loud ones -

My new car has a "3 blink" option if you just touch it a little and so I rarely set it for constant blinking except when I am at a light and making a hard turn. It's a good thing too because mine is fairly quite

You could always drain some of the Blinker Fluid out and it might become louder.......

Quite frankly from the drivers point of view I really don't see a problem. So the blinker's on...so what if the people driving around him have an issue with that it's THEIR problem-get over it. I'm a GOOD drivers-in 45 years of driving I've never been in an accident that was my fault-well except for that time a almost took out that car load of mexicans parked in the middle lane of a multi lane throughway right at the base of an overpass. Three more feet and I would have missed them entirely. Still pisses me off and I knew I was screwed when the reporting officer showed up and his name tag read "Hernandez". What I should have done is just plow into the car and given them their money's worth-I had plenty if insurance

I'll also add that I've been guilty of leaving turn signals on in one car-my MG.

The self-canceling is wonky and broken in one direction, when I'm moving I can't hear them over exhaust, wind noise, road noise, and every other sound the car makes, and the dash bulbs are dim enough that I can't see them very well in daylight(especially with the top down).

Part of my regular "check list" in the car is to make sure the signals are off, but I've been guilty sometimes of leaving them on for too long.

I don't need anything else. I've got my wife, and she will let me know if I forget to turn it off manually. It seems they almost never turn themselves off these days.

When I see someone with theirs on now I just say, "They must not have a 'Wheezy." (my wife's pet name) She grins.

Exactly, the cancel is broken on my IH grain truck that gets used about 1 month a year. I just pay attention and cancel it by hand.

Not sure how old yours are.
My brother after years of me and several of his friends telling him to go to the VA finally went last year.
His hearing aids he got from the VA not only work better than any he got before but he has a little remote looking thing that lets him hear the tv and a different one for his cell phone in his truck while keeping the volume at normal levels.

After I started using hearing aids I was amazed at the dings, clicks and noises my car made. And my wife appreciates the lower volume on the radio.

Remember when Chrysler made vehicles had the turn signal indicator lights on the top front of the fenders on each side of the hood? I always thought that was a quality feature.

Hard to miss. This would work great for you.

That is also a problem that what you describe would answer:I cannot see the blinkers on the dash of my old Toyota because the steering wheel is in the way! If I could see them I might remember to turn them off!

For years I thought that all the chimes in my truck were not working, somehow they all started to work again when I got my hearing aides.

One of my goals if I ever hit the big $$$ is to buy a new Cadillac convertible, drive top down, 45mph in the left lane of the freeway, with my left turn signal on.
