Default A computer hint

I'll pass on a story from last weekend. I made a change in one of the W10 operating system features (to turn off Microsoft Media). While that should not be a problem, it killed my laptop completely. I couldn't re-boot or do anything - I got just a pure black screen, like the laptop had been turned off. I even removed the battery and replaced it, and that didn't help either. Fortunately, both Windows 7 and Windows 10 have a feature allowing you to create a Windows system recovery disc (on DVD) which I did when I first bought my laptop. I have never needed to use it before, but as I had nothing to lose, I popped it into the DVD drive. That was all it took. After a few seconds, my laptop had started and it was obvious that things were going on. About 10 minutes later, I was allowed to log on normally and everything was back to exactly where it was before the problem. You will find it at Control Panel>All Control Panel Items>Recovery>Advanced Recovery Tools>Create A Recovery Drive. If you make one, it could save you an expensive repair bill or even worse.

I've mostly used the Media Creation Tool to make a Windows 10 installation bootable USB flash drive.

Download Windows 10

I completely wipe(format installation partition) my hard drives and SSDs about every 6 months and install a fresh copy of Windows

You can also create a mirror image of your entire hard drive for re-installation of everything, including user software, and the method can also be found on the Windows control panel. It needs to be created on a hard drive or a very large capacity USB drive. It can be used in conjunction with the rescue disc. It can also be updated as often as you wish. I have that also for all of my computers but it takes a fairly long time to create. The main thing needed is a way to get into your computer if it freezes up completely, and the rescue disc earlier mentioned allows that to happen as it will boot your computer no matter what the problem. In fact it may be the only way it can be done.

It's seldom one really needs to re-install the full operating system, the SFC/SCANNOW command will scan the OS and repair any corrupted files automatically. It is also a good idea to perform the SFC/SCANNOW routine occasionally, which I do. I know it works with both W7 and W10, I don't know about any other versions of Windows. If you Google SFC/SCANNOW, you can get the full instructions as to how it can be done. It really is fairly simple and doesn't take too long to perform.

The main reason I wipe the drive is to get rid of the 6 moth accumulation of fragments left from deleted trial versions, stubborn programs that are hard to get rid of entirely and a few security reasons.Everything I need to reinstall is on other flash drives.

I never do recommend settings,I customize and mostly say no to all choices.

See if when you restore from a created image if you have a folder called Old Windows? Then look what's being kept.

I've done this so many times I can get Windows installed with my select programs and passwords in a very short time then start accumulating again.

I made a recovery drive per their recommendation. Hope I don't have to use it.

I think I have found your problem. You just need some bug spray.
