Default Word of advise I learned the hard way....

Never, never, ever try to use a new computer with Windows 10 to do your normal work. I was trying to get on the forum and the thing acted so crazy that I got locked out of the forum. I had to get hold of Lee, to get me back in.

I was able to 'tame' my old HP laptop by tinkering around with the settings in Windows. In fact that's what I'm using now. I got my wife a new ASUS laptop and even after changing a lot of settings it still does a hundred things EXCEPT what I want it to do. I'm not going to saddle my wife with that, but I'm going to have to figure out how to control it before anybody uses it.

To me there NO advantage to using Win 10 but it is a LOT more complicated and has a mind of it's own to the point that it ignores you. The computer people need to read up on the Three Laws of Robotics.

Well, it's probably just different. I upgraded to Win10 as soon as it was available. Haven't had a single issue.

I'm not sure what caused you to get locked out of the forum, but it wasn't Windows 10. Windows is the operating system and doesn't dictate how you get on a forum. Maybe you changed or updated your browser? Did you switch to Microsoft Edge from Internet Explorer when you upgraded to Win 10? I usually recommend Firefox.

I don't see much benefit to switching to W10 from W7. Nonetheless I did update two laptops from W7 to W10 back when it was free to do so. I can honestly say I have no reason to be sorry I did, W10 works fine for me. My son has a laptop with W8.1, and it is a nightmare to work with. No way I would ever have a W8.1 computer. I have both Opera and Firefox browsers installed, but Opera is more of a backup for Firefox than anything else. Microsoft Edge is a non-starter, I want nothing to do with it. I learned the hard way long ago that I should have at least two browsers installed in case one fails.

I have been using Ubuntu with Firefox for about 8 years now. When I was using the various versions of Windows I was constantly having problems...viruses, system crashes, slow running machine, even with different anti-virus software (Mcafee, etc) my system was riddled with viruses...and the anti-virus software slowed the system down dramatically. Since using Ubuntu, *zero* issues with viruses, system runs much smoother and quicker, and system crashes have dropped about 95%.

If you have some specific programs/applications that require Windows to operate...you can partition your drive, run Ubuntu most of the time, especially while online, and run Windows when using those applications that require it.

The computer and the OS were so jerky, windows jerking around and popping up without me wanting them to that I failed login too many times and got locked out. When I tried to get a new password, everything was fine until I tried to plug the new passcode into the log in page. The thing went nuts again and when I found my way back to the log in page, the code wouldn't work. When I tried to get another, the site thought that I was a hacker and wouldn't let me try again.

What I'm saying is that the OS and the new computer were so outrageously uncontrollable and badly behaved, that it caused me to lock myself out.

I tried to tweak the settings but the problem just got worse. I ended up restoring the computer to factory and start over. Man that was frustrating. Now I gotta try to get it working well enough to use. I would NOT ask my wife, who can barely run a PC at all, to use that damn thing.

One thing that I notice is different about the computer itself is that rather than the touchpad having buttons, the whole touch pad clicks. Between that and Windows autoselecting everything I touch, it's insane. I've turned off 'hover' features and the like but nothing I"ve done helps and only makes it worse.

I've been running 10 for a few months now with no issues. Took a couple of days to get the kinks worked out but it's always that way with an operating system upgrade.

I was a big DOS and PCTools fan back in the day and resisted going to Windows in the first place. When I changed out my 10MB hard drive for a 20MB I thought I was in tall cotton.

Default I've got three....

Before I bought the ASUS, I had three computers with Win 10 and one with Win 7. Though I don't like Win 10, I'm able to work on all of those with no problem. I bought an ASUS Win 7 machine for a friend one time and it was an excellent combo.

I have NO idea why the combo of the Asus and Win 10 is beyond uncontrollable and it's going to take some time to find out.

Have you considered turning off the touch pad and just using a mouse? I know I've had trouble with touch pads in the past. I've always been able to overcome those issues, but sometimes it's just a good idea to try something else.

I always said that if Microsoft made cars, the gas peddle would get moved to the trunk and the steering wheel to the hood. Why? Just because they like to watch us squirm!

My wife probably could but I don't sit in my chair where I have no flat surface to run the mouse on. I think I have an idea, though.

"Why should people complain about Windows 10...If's free." I beg your pardon it is NOT free. I PAID for my copy of Windows 7, but new pcs now come with 10. Win 10 is a vehicle mainly for f collecting our info and forcing more advertising down our throats

My cheapo E Machine pc that uses win 7 can't even take windows 10 program. I bought a Mac Imac because I don't want windows anymore and after just setting it up I haven't used it since. I need find a high school kid to show me how to use it. I figure I will use my cheapo PC, that has out lasted any pc I had before that cost over twice as much, till it crashes. Then I will try and learn how to use the IMAC.
