I worked 40 yrs. for a company that had subsidiaries in many States so moving and keeping a job was possible and I have visited 40 some States but I was born and reared in NC and I don't see any reason to move. BUT if I ever do move it will be to Wyoming. My second favorite State. Larry

My daughter's been working her mother and me over about moving to the Gulf Coast of Mississippi, where she lives. Lived all my life in Michigan, dislike winter more & more the older I get. That said, winter can be dealt with. A day or two after a big snow, streets are plowed, people have their sidewalks and driveways cleared. Life gets somewhat back to normal. On the other hand, one hurricane and that's that. Guess I'll be staying up here.

Stay in Michigan. I went to to the U of M. My son went to U of Southern Mississippi, So I've spent time in both states. I'd take Michigan over Mississippi any day.

I am retired now and still live in the same area that I grew up in!
Don't like winter and the cold anymore, have no use for it! I would just like to pack and move to Arizona and at one time I had almost bought land out there.
For health reasons I believe it would be better for me and I just like it out there.
Have several friends who retired out there and they love it!
But since the wife is still working and with our kids and grandchildren still living here it isn't going to happen!

How about you? Where and why?
As a recently retired federal employee myself, I know we have to look to states that don't tax our pension. Here in MA, they do not .That's a good part of the reason I'm staying. Family and laziness is the rest.
Truth be told, I just can't see relearning what it's taken me near 60 years to figure out about the where, who, when and why's in my life all over again. For me, there is a great comfort in keeping things the same. Adjusting to retired life already has it's challenges. I don't need more for a weather change.
If I recall correctly, NC treats fed retires good too. Good choice! Always said that if I did move, it would be to NC. It's allot like New England (minus the Yankee's :-)
Enjoy it!

We bailed out of New Jersey as soon as I retired in 2011 and moved to North East Pennsylvania. Close enough to the kids. Very rural, surrounded by state and federal land, lower taxes, no income tax on retirement income, pensions etc. Great hunting, fishing, hiking, skiing. And we can shoot in the backyard. Just got back from a day of kayaking just a few miles from the cabin. Good luck in your search.

I'm fine right here in Minnesota. Pretty good cultural amenities, restaurants, and lots of outdoors stuff. My kids and grandkids are here, too. I don't really mind the cold and snow. You learn to dress for it and drive in it, and it tends to keep the riffraff out. In the summer, I can't imagine anywhere I would prefer, except maybe Sconny next door.

on terminal leave till my 62nd Bday April. I' ve been eligible for a early retirement from my NYC Civil service job since 2011 but would to have kept working at a civilian job. Blessed with a few good years to build 457s and pad pension. Can't wait to have freedom to pursue my hobbies. Will try to establish residence in Vero Beach Florida (no income tax on retirements), Will not miss NJ winter or NYC liberal ****holes one bit. Will still spend warmer months at the Jersey Shore. Both communities have great fishing and good shooting ranges near by.

As fellow Minnestoan with 3 years left to work I am pretty much in the same mindset, with one exception, I am scouting locations to spend January to March. Maybe Costa Rica or Mexico. Just a three month rental spot.

Retired this year and built a new home outside Whitehall, MT. We visited Arizona, NM, W. Texas and Nevada a while back. Too many people and I would miss ice fishing far too much to go South for anything longer than a week of the Arizona Fall League. Grandkids are here and life is good. I'll trade and hour one way to a supermarket to having to wait at a stoplight. We have a Dentist and 3 Dr's in town at the same clinic and it is rare you can't be seen the next day after you call.
Tonight we have a dozen antelope out the front window and 5 deer out the deck. Life is good.

A couple of observationsthus far:
1) I see one recurring theme - being close to family and friends.
2) Climate doesn't appear to play as much of a role with as many of you as I thought it would.

I guess the climate aspect would all depend on how many times you moved and where you lived.........I was born in NYC, lived in Atlanta, the greater Houston area, western slope of CO, ND, NV and FL......family is scattered.....now, if I won the lottery, I'd live at Tahoe and maybe FL or HI, but that isn't happening for me at this stage...........so if you are living/working in a town where you and your parents and your grandparents and your whole family lives, then climate isn't as much a factor as closeness to them is...............

After 49 years as a respiratory therapist, I am staying put. Retired April 30 this year.

House is paid for, credit card debt is minimal, still serving as reserve officer in CID.

Texas has just about everything I could need in terrain.

Common sense is still present to a great extent, at least in rural areas.

Gun laws are about the best in the area.

Wine industry is exploding around me.

Yep, that about covers it.

Ten years ago, had retirement forced upon me. Retire then or lose retiree healthcare. Wife was already medically retired, so we packed up what we had left after the sale of the house and most household items and left Minnesota and its snow and cold Winter. Moved to be close to our sons in Georgia. Lived the retirement community route for seven years and we found it not to our liking. Sold that manufactured home and moved farther away from Atlanta and settled in a small town in the hills of NE Georgia. Been here three years and am truly settled into it. Sure like the mild Winter and no sub-zero weather. The last couple of years were hard up in MN.

Were we to do it again, we would opt to not have lived in a gated-community. Too restrictive for an independent and ornery old cuss like me. Only thing I miss is a gun-club that is not killed with rules and run by people that do not know **** from shinola. We do live near the WMA and that range is free for old-timers.

Parents died years ago. Two sisters in MN and we are not close, so the distance is not that much of a burden. One son moved to FL for his job and sanity. Atlanta was getting to him. The other son is here and we shoot together most weekends and do the gun-shows together. Moving was a good thing.

A few years ago I had considered moving to Northern AZ but with kids and grandkids set in the jobs and homes in MN and MO, guess I'll just stay here in between them. I can still keep my nose in the business, nice indoor shooting range 10 minutes away, My sisters , nieces, nephews, step-kids, and step grands are all in CA & AZ so if I need a break in winter I can go visiting.

Born and raised an Iowa farm girl I couldn't live in a city but do like to travel & visit.

Default Retirement

My wife and I have been retired for 5 years. Many places we would have like to "retire to", but having an adult challenged son who is gainfully employed here and doing very well, we will stay here in North Dakota. ND has it's downsides, like any place, but we can't complain. However we are moving; from a rural area where we've lived for forty years into town to a twin home. You make good with the cards dealt, and we feel fortunate to have our son and our health. And I can enjoy my guns, shooting, and great hunting, time with our son, and my wife has a whole slew of good friends here

Default Already There!

Southern Black Hills of South Dakota.
8 miles from Pringle, elk capital of South Dakota.
18 miles from Hot Springs.
So called Banana Belt, but as house is at 4900' elevation, we shall see this winter?
Mule deer, whitetail deer, Merriam turkeys, wander the yard every day, even had several deer on the back porch, looking in the bedroom window one morning. Seen elk within 3 miles, but none on the property yet.
Rural water, electricity, and several acres for the horses. Next to the Mikkelson Trail for the bikes and horses. Place came with 2yo atv with blade, 16' boat with 50hp Yamaha, so activities covered, things to maintain! Hot Springs has a population age similar to us. South of the main tourist traffic in the season, and isolated enough, but still within reach of amenities we desire.
No or low humidity!!!! 😁

Likely much too cold for me. Anywhere that requires a plow is a no-go for me.
Though, it does sound like an excellent setup you have there.

Dirt streets. 21' of snow last winter. Burned four cords of wood to stay warm. 30 miles to gas 'n' groceries. Wore snow shoes and pulled a sled with my six-gallon gas can, grub and other supplies up the hill every week. 30 year-round residents; some are hospitable; all of 'em have guns -- lots of guns. Gets -40° most winters. Wind blows all the time. Ticks and other bitin' critters. Bears. Mean mamma moose. Pack rats.

It's a terrible place; tell yer friends.

'bout a hundred yards from my cabin to the town's overlook atop Mill Hill (where I took the first photo). The feller who owns the red cabin across the county road was here for 24 hours one day this year -- for the eclipse -- a bit long for my likin'.

Been here goin' on 12 years. Turned 65 this summer. B'lieve I'll stay.

Wyoming!! Massive envy. One of my favorite states. Don't know if I could take the winters but I could give it a try! Of course my wife might object to the winters but she loves Wyoming in the summers. My favorite place, Douglas. Can't say why. I just like the town, but been to all four corners of Wyoming and a lot in between. One of the most beautiful states in the country. The best thing, more sheep than people. I like that your nearest neighbor might be miles away. I don't mind driving two hours to go shopping.

PS: Walkinghorse, A boat? Where do I find property (other than an island) that comes with a boat?

Probably just stay here... Remodel the house for a home base and then just ..well...hell I don't know. What I really want to do is sell my office building and then buy a trawler. Then live on it for most of the time keeping one step ahead of Creditors/kids/wife. Take the ditch to Brownsville and then come back. Take the ditch east around Florida up the east coast-maybe do the loop, maybe not. Have the 13' whaler on the back for fishing, etc.
Or use the office building proceeds to buy a sailboat instead of the trawler and cruise the caribbean (although I'd stay away from Puerto Rico for now).
Or maybe I'll die in which case it's all the wife's stuff and she can decide what to do with it.

I chose Texas;I just couldn't fathom returning to New York City after working abroad for 20 years.

My pensions and SS are safe in Texas from triple taxes in NYC

Texas cities are going blue if not already blue and some are buying into being sanctuary cities.

Near my area is a huge population of people from southeast Asia that are pressuring local boards to change things to their thinking.High School football is in danger of being eliminated in a few areas and funds going to soccer.

The beautiful greenery in this area is rapidly disappearing with strip malls replacing it.

I really like Texas and my neighbors but may need to move again further from the over development.Half of the ranches that were here 3 years ago are gone, replaced by housing developments and malls.

I'm on a greenbelt that the town wants to put a road through.

Can tell you about another place in S.D. that had a boat on it. All steel, my guess about 30' with. 8' beam! 8 miles east of Newcastle Wy. ! Of course the hole in it was about 4' in dia. ! Amazing what is out amongst the trees and scrub, if you look around. Looked at places with mining claims on them, of course the claim was not in the sale. But you need to be careful looking, even if a for sale sign is there, a lot of people get antzy about a stranger wandering around!

Took voluntary layoff in May, 2014, after working in the aerospace industry for over 34 years. My step-father in Massachusetts, 69 years old, died of a heart attack. After his funeral, wife and I decided San Jose, CA was getting too crowded to bear. Also had developed atrial flutter due to work stress. Decided to stay in California, both kids still in bay area and most of wife's relatives also there, but moved to Paradise, CA. Northern CA is a big departure from the city states of San Francisco and L.A. 26K people, little traffic, wooded areas, close to college town and major shopping. Works for us.

We retired here from Seattle and love it. Don’t miss the rain at all.
Lower taxes and cost of living don’t hurt either. Gun laws here are
just the icing on the cake.

I'll probably stay here. 4 hours from my cabin in Maine and deer hunting. 2 hours from Cape Cod and all of the beach and ocean anyone could ever want. 2 hours from snow skiing and snow shoeing.

No wild fires, floods, mud slides, earth quakes, tornadoes, alligators, poisonous snakes, sink holes, chiggers, hurricanes or other such negatives.

Retired more than a decade ago to Greenville SC from Long Island NY. I worked a contract there thirty years ago and knew it would be on my short list for retirement.
It offers a choice of urban and rural diversions in a pleasant environment that's a day's drive from everywhere east of the Mississippi river.

bigwheelzip -- wow, that's an impressive video.

Here's a contrasting one about the 150-year-old town 3 miles from here.

Enjoy,

Yeah, I know. The history of the Old West -- Wyoming anyway -- is like having a history conversation with somebody from Europe. We speak of a hundred being old; they speak in thousands of years. We're just a bunch of young whipper-snappers.

The point of my posting the video wasn't to claim age, but rather show the contrast between the up-and-coming, ultra-modern and the historic.

Coming up on 20+ years of Federal job. My Federal retirement, Social Security and 401(k) will/should give us a pretty good retirement. Wife will have a couple more years after me.

This will be the third year in a row (4th total) we go to Alaska, especially the Kenai Peninsula. We could sell our house in WA, both cars are in good shape and paid for and move to Homer. Problem would be health care. Homer, Soldotna, Kenai and Anchorage all have health care facilities. All have a Safeway & Fred Meyer. Weather would be pretty comparable to North Central Washington, in the Cascades. There is some interest in me for a seasonal job in Homer.

However, I have a standing P/T job waiting for me here. I also am interested in getting a second Master's Degree in Primate Behavior or Ecology or a PhD in Bear Behavior. Local schools offer both. Also, I have connections to teach part-time or environmental consulting. House is going to be remodeled and I enjoy canning, gardening, preserving, and cooking. Family is not an issue for either of us. Siblings but none are close.

Another factor is shipping (one) car and trailering our "stuff" would cost as much as several halibut trips and I can catch salmon in town. I expect I'll be staying put.

At 0:12 there is a man on the left holding a Springfield Trapdoor Cavalry Carbine. I sure would like to know the serial number of that gun and the history. Rosebud Creek? Little Big Horn?

Been retired for 7 yrs this month. Born and raised here in Georgia but left in military, ended up in Florida. Started with FAA there and ended up staying there for 30 years. Transferred back to Georgia in 2003 to be closer to parents and in-laws due to their failing health. They're all gone now, but 2 of our 4 kids are here along with the 2 grandkids and some other family. We won't go anywhere else.

I think I'm retired now. I am an NRA Instructor, but since CCW license
is no longer required here, I don't have much to do. I've pretty much
nailed my feet to the ground here in Boise. Been to all 50 states and
a few countries and haven't found any place any better.

I've been doing some traveling in the last few years as my wife and I have been retired for awhile. Mostly we just buzz up and down the west coast and Rocky Mountain states. I've been to NC, WV and VA also. We're in SE Utah right now, but we won't stay much longer because the weather is changing. This trip we were or will be in OR, CA, NV, UT, CO, NM and ID. Been thru WY and MT several times also in the past few years.

I've also lived in FL and AZ. We're on and island in WA. presently. We've talked about moving but every time we decide to stay put. When you move you leave friends and family. That's probably the biggest reason we didn't move. I've seen some places I would rather live but when I consider the big picture they all lose their luster for one reason or another.

NC is a beautiful place to be. Believe me, you could do a lot worse. I suggest you travel some before you decide if you haven't already.

Retire? I'm in my 30s and people in my generation are aware that there's no such thing as retiring anymore. U.S. national debt is at $20+ trillion right now...

Yeah, the question could only be considered by boomers.

Everyone else pays cash.

I know his is a bi IF. But IF you come up the Eastern Ditch, let me know. I'll fetch you over to The Battery Oaks when you get this way. In the mornings I'm about 250 yards from the ditch and in the afternoons about 6 miles. IF!

For all those above the Mason-Dixon wanting to move South...remember...It is humid, sweaty and we have gnats. Yes you can play golf all year long but you will miss the beautiful white landscape come December. Lived 95% of my life in NC I have only experienced 1 white Christmas and always prayed for snow to go sledding. Grass grows like crazy and it is really fun fun to cut it in June/July/August/September. Humidity sucks.
