And so, his collection will pass on to others, the history preserved. He sounded like a great man and he is with HIM in God's kingdom.

Old soldiers never die,
they just fade away...
to a better place.
God speed Cyrano.

Rest In Peace Lieutenant Colonel Colin Doane. I wish I would have had the pleasure of making your acquaintance before you were called home.

He must have passed away just shortly after you spoke with his daughter.
I guess it's OK to use his real name now, he was Colin Doane. Like many of you I had some correspondence with him, and he was an articulate and well educated, scholarly, and enthusiastic proponent of the shooting, reloading and collecting fraternity. I am going to copy the short bio from the book that he coauthored with Eugene Medlin. I have just been reading it today.
Just found his obituary....
In Memory of
Lt Col Colin Robertson Doane
July 30, 1933 - October 9, 2017
Obituary
Colin Robertson Doane was born on July 30, 1933 in Reading, PA, the only child of Francis H and Eleanor F (Kamenoff) Doane. He grew up in Sherman, CT, except for the years of World War II, when he lived in Jackson, MS, Bel Aire MD, Asheville, NC and Seattle, WA.
In 1955, he graduated from Harvard University with an AB degree in Romance Languages. As a result of pursuing the ROTC option at college, he was commissioned in the Air Defense Artillery branch of the US Army. He served in the air defenses of Boston MA and Norfolk VA. He served overseas in Greenland, Alaska and Vietnam.
In 1964 he married Mary Kay Kellam at Cape Charles, VA.
In 1975 he retired from the Army with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He entered the civil service as an education counselor and administrator in the Education Branch, Ft. Bliss, TX, retiring in 1995.
He enjoyed travel, visiting Hawaii, Canada, Mexico, Denmark, France, England and New Zealand. He was interested in firearms and shooting; he wrote several articles on various aspects of firearms, and co-authored a book on the French Model 1935 pistols with Eugene Medlin.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife, Mary Kay. He is survived by his children; Sydney S. Kellam ( Marcella J.) of Dallas, TX and Mary H.K. Ready of Albuquerque, NM and three grandchildren; Jeffrey S. Lillie, Daniel B. Lillie (Emily Kuo) and Tessa L. Ready.
RIP Sir.
Best Regards, Les

Rest in Peace Colin. I never knew that day could be so dark. My prayers are for him, his family, and all of his friends. This hobby-has lost a great friend and I have lost a mentor.
This is the first time in a few months ive shed tears-.................

It is not meant for any of us to live forever in this sphere of existence. By the same token, when the really good people pass on to their reward in the next world, those who recall mourn and feel the loss. His ship has sailed over the horizon.

Saddened by this news.
A mainstay of this forum his generosity of thought
and self deprecating style will be missed. A man of varied
interests managed to turn a degree in Romance languages
into a passion for French firearms.
There is a good story in there somewhere.
I'm sorry I'll never hear it.
Rest in Peace Colin Doane.

The world is a better place to have had him in it, and so much sadder to have lost him.

I didn't know him personally but he did respond to a few of my threads. Always thoughtful and helpful.
Guys like him make our lives better and make us saddened when they depart. Always remember that their lives were full of that special generosity and that's why they will be missed.
To die loved and respected by people that didn't know you well and more so by those who did is an accomplishment few people achieve.
God speed.
