The U.S.N. has been allowed to decay over the last eight years, just as it was allowed to decay after the Civil War.
Let's hope that things get fixed in a big way over the next four.

Happy b day.
We come a long way since then. Remember we shot a crippled sattlite out of the sky from a ship? The sattlite was in space falling towards earth. Funny how the rest of the world forgets.

Happy birthday to the Corps sister service. We would be the Army without you. Go Navy. Beat Army.
Ok soldiers do not get bent out of shape. I cherish you too. I just don’t understand why you did Minot want to routinely test your ability to not get sea sick. But, I have to root for Navy in the annual contest. My dad was a sailor.

Happy Birthday USN!
Dad was a CPO in WWII, taught aerial gunnery and dive bombing in Pensacola.
During the 60's my Dad always told me - "Navy's got the nukes."
Whatever...
SAC anyone...?
Still, God bless the Navy.

"Give me a fast ship, for I mean to sail in harm's way."
Not bad for an AF guy remembering a Navy quote.
I was tempted to cite another Naval quote, but given the board's censor, "Doggone the torpedoes; full speed ahead" just wouldn't look right.
Are the actors above Christopher Plummer and Robert Stack? What was the name of the movie? How old is it? Can I see it on YouTube?

Most of Dad's ditties were Air Corps songs, but I remember one Navy one...
He would sit and play the piano like a pilot in a ready room (which he had been) in some old movie about the Battle of Britian...
I wanted wings 'till I got the goshdarn* things,
Now I don't want them anymore
They taught us how to fly,
And sent us out to die,
I have had a belly full of war,
You can save those Mitsubishis,
For some other sons of Richies,
When we get home late,
We get our wisky straight,
Oh,
I wanted...
They feed us lousy chow,
But we stay alive somehow,
On dehydrated eggs and milk and stew,
The rumor has it next,
(two censored lines, pertaining to command, shipboard food and liberty)
That's when I tell the boys I am through.
I wanted...
I'm too young to die,
In a lousy PBY,
That's for the eager not for me,
I don't trust in my luck,
To be picked up by a Duck,
After I have crashed into the sea,
For I'd rather be a Terrier,
Than a flyer on a carrier,
With my hand around a bottle,
You can keep your goshdarn* throttle,
Buster,
I wanted....
Miss you Dad.

Robert Stack is one-not sure the other. The movie is John Paul Jones and it was made around the mid 1950s (not an actioner like it looks-but still a good movie none the less)-and the quote -or part of the poem is about David Glasgow Farragut. "Damn the torpedoes-full speed ahead....." Sorry ive forgotten the rest. I learned it in the 7th grade as part of a math class project.

The movie is excellent and dates from 1959. I've since started a new thread with a link to view it.

I bought a molded DvD copy when it first came out about 4 years ago. Havent seen it sense as ive got over 1,000 movies. Ill eventually get around to it again.
As you liked this one-try Robert Stack in: Fighter Squadron-that one too-is excellent. Also-a bonus--it featured all things--Cats.......................red, yellow, blue and green Thunderbolt Squadrons.

When I joined the US Navy, my rating was cross hammers,
a year after I was on active duty, one of the hammers was swapped for an axe,,,
I see now, they added a framing square,,,
I actually loved my work, even when they tossed all the fire fighting duties in on top of everything else!!
Happy Birthday USN!!

Graduated high school 1972, Thanks to good old Tricky Dick I missed out on the draft! I was classified 1H, H = Holding.
Now my mistake which I believe too this day was I didn't enlist?
Now if I would have it would have been,,,,,You guessed it! ,,,
NAVY
And it would have been for the Silent Service, I least I would have tried!

Now Lesson Two in strategy—
Our subs and planes are title C.
Just send them out on any mission
And win your battles by attrition.
Where'er you send the subs or planes
They're bound to chalk up lots of gains--
And losses, too, but what the hell.
Who cares about their personnel?
For planes are chauffeured by young studs;
Lieutenant Commanders run the subs.
— Richard G. Voge, Lieutenant Commander, USN.
In one of my dad's books just after WW2 about the subs. I've mentioned in posts before he was a 20 year sub man. Actually in the cavalry until disbanded in '39 then the Navy. I was in for 4 from 64-67. By the way 52 subs and 3500 men didn't come back in WW2, just happy my dad did.

Graduated in 73 and my lottery number was 10. If not for Nixon, I was headed east.
The silent service became aware of my existence somehow and courted me to join. How that happened I'll never know. At the time, subs had the reputation of having misfits, so I thought that's why they were interested in me.
What they didn't know was that I lost the hearing in my right ear from measles when I was 5. Pretty much no joy for things like subs and aircraft.
Pretty sure the Army didn't care at the time, VN being the meat grinder it was.
If they drafted me, I would have gone to the Marines.

Reasons I joined the Navy.
#1 if the engines/power goes dead, your just DIW , not so with a aircraft.
#2 3 hots and a cot no matter if your at battle stations.
#3 I don't sleep well in a fox hole.
#4 I like the idea of 5" 38 guns at 12 miles and they can't shoot back well.
#5 With subs, well, we did have several ways of dropping multi nuke depth charges or torpedoes.
#6 I look better in Navy Dress Blues then any other uniform I think! LOL!
#7 An that's where I met the love of my life!!!!!!!

FWIW, Sterling Hayden was with the OSS in WWII.
And I think the actor with Stack is Peter Cushing (?).

He is Peter Cushing as Captain Richard Pearson. Good spot-I should have known--the gaunt cheeks gave him away.

Happy Birthday and many more to come!
I supported the fast boat submarine navy as a "sand crab" engineer for near 32 years before retiring this past spring. I can't imagination a more meaningful carer for a better cause.
