That is a fine looking cat, my friend. Good on you.

This is a tough time of year for black cats. A lot of shelters won't even adopt them out during October out of concern they would get used as Halloween props then dumped again.

If You Want to Adopt a Black Cat, You May Have to Wait Until Halloween Is Over

The only suggestion I might make is to check to see if a home was nearby, one where a young child might have let the cat out by mistake, before you get too attached to it.

Thanks, we did look around some, this was in an area with very few homes, maybe I'll drive back up there again today and double check.

Well, Maple Trapper got me to worrying, so I drove back out to where we found Lucky. Here is the view that we saw that day, Lucky was right in the middle of the picture, at the base of the rocks, and across the roadway, trying to run towards where I was standing when I took this picture. This rock face extends in both directions for a couple of hundred yards. To my back is a creek way too wide for the kitty to have crossed. No houses for a long way in either direction.

I still believe that someone must have put him out. I will keep watch for “lost kitty” signs.

Here is an update photo of Lucky here at the cabin:

Best Regards, Les

If you know the area just Google map it to see if there are any houses. From the picture it doesn't look it

In my opinion it either had a home not long ago but wondered off or it was born wild. We don't have a stray animal problem around here. If there is one it's definitely because someone left a door open. Areas like in the picture typically have nothing around for miles

I would make a substantial wager some piece of human execrement simply dumped him along the road. Frankly I would be surprised if they even slowed down. Les he looks like he is fitting right in and making himself at home!

Good on you Les!!! One of those times I wish we could give multiple likes. Really! Lucky is a cute little fella. He kinda looks like he is going to be a hand full. You are a good man and I agree that there couldn't possibly be a better name for him that LUCKY.

Bella is not a happy camper!!! She hisses every time that Lucky tries to get close to her!! She looks at me as if I had betrayed her trust. I try to spend time with her to show her she is still important, and I’m sure that she will eventually come around. She has not tried to hurt the little guy, and he is little. I almost think she is afraid of him, small as he is, and as relatively large as she is.

Best Regards, Les

Thanks Jack!! You’re right, he is literally a little handful...he will fit in my hand, and is full of mischief! Have fun at your “fall break” down at the beach. Sounds like a perfect getaway.

Outstanding, Les. We have four rescues. All are now indoor cats who keep us amused. Our black cat, Middy (Midnight) is a cuddler and turns on his purr machine every time he comes around to check up on me. I hope you and your new pal have a great life together.

Whenever we've introduced a kitten to the rest of the family, there's always been some dominance issues like hissing or growling to let the newcomer know its place. We were always quick to show support for the kitty to let it know we accepted it, and the other cat(s) came around in a few days.

That is an excellent new picture of Lucky at the cabin. I can imagine him thinking that soon he will have the humans trained. LOL.

You know, cats sure can be funny, Les. We have a 13 year old cat who was never too warm to new cat additions to the family until Cooper, who we got around 3-4 months ago. The cat before him that adopted us, Sox, didn't get accepted by her for around 2-3 months or so. But she took to Cooper right away. Maybe it's because we lost our dog Kira right before he came home and all our cats and dogs were pretty close, even the ones outside who come around to eat free food. Nee Nee even plays with him occasionally each day. And Cooper and Sox get along famously.

Based on what that picture shows where you rescued the kitten, I say Congratulation, you are officially the cat's new owner, or is it that the cat is your new owner?

Update...November 11, 2017:

Well, Lucky had his first official visit to the vet's office this morning. It was 4 weeks yesterday since we found him alongside of a back road. Vet says that he is about 9 weeks old, and old enough for the first round of his kitty shots and treatments. He had fleas when we found him, but he had to be a certain age before he could have a flea treatment. In the meantime, I gave him baths and used the flea comb, but couldn't quite get them all. He was old enough to have a treatment today. Also, tested for worms, and treated for those, plus had his first kitty shots. He weighs in at 2.6 pounds!!

Vet says that he is healthy, and I can attest to his energy level and love of play, and affection for folks, and his kitty friend, Bella.

Overall, I'm pretty happy. Next visit in three weeks.

Best Regards, Les

Actually, I was surprised at how relaxed he was. He charmed all of the vet tech girls, even the vet!! After he got his shot, he fell asleep in my lap while we were waiting for the vet to come in and talk with us.

I also had our dog Erma there at the same time, for an anal gland squeeze and to have her nails trimmed. She loves the place, and knows when we are about 100 yards away, and starts getting excited. Some dogs hate going to the vets: Erma loves it.

Best Regards, Les

You made my wife go, "Aww, he's so adorable! You're lucky to have such a cute little baby."
We're glad to hear he's a healthy little boy.

Our cats know all the vet tech girls too—it takes them all to hold them down when the anal probe and needles come out!

A black kitten wandered into my yard one, running snot from every orifice. The vet gave him some antibiotics and he cleaned up nicely, developing a beautiful, luxurious coat. I called him Rico, so I could say “Rico, get the car” like Robert Stack always did in the Untouchables.

A vet once told me that the dogs and cats that lost an eye or a limb always got called “Lucky”, at least until they left the hospital, but it suits your little guy, too.

Well, I thought I had posted this, but since I said Bella wasn't happy, (above, October 15th, 2017), she has since made up with Lucky, and they are inseparable!! She is a combination mother, sister, and playmate. She grooms him, they chase each other, and sound like a herd of elephants running around the cabin!! She looks a little stern here, but they are best friends.

Best Regards, Les

That reminds me of when we got Natayo.
After Zachary established that he was the King of the house, they became the best of buddies.

Handsome little dude.

After my experience with my little dog Moose, I want the T-shirt that saya "RESCUED is my favorite breed."

Caje, I want a black cat of the female persuasion, so I can name her Blanche.

Greetings:

Thought you guys might like to hear an update on “Lucky”

We had our second visit to the vet today. Three weeks ago, Lucky was treated for round worms, fleas, and got his first shots. He weighed 2.6 pounds. Here he is this evening...I had to wake him up to take his picture, (that's why he's giving me the "malocchio") , he is all worn out from his big trip to see the vet today:

Today he weighed in at 3.8 pounds, and was treated for tape worms, received his second kitty shot, and was pronounced generally in good health. He goes back again in three more weeks for a final booster shot and second tape worm treatment.

He is so energetic, and although he has not gained a lot of weight, he has grown dramatically in bone length. And he is a dynamo... sounds like a herd of elephants all by himself, and when he is chasing Bella, or she is chasing him, they shake the cabin!!

Anyway, he is a pretty happy, healthy kitty!!

Best Regards, Les

Less that is one cute kitten. I can see that when he grows up he is going to be a beautiful adult cat. When you first got him and posted his picture here I said the he looked like he was going to be a hand full. I think that is even more obvious now. I know the look well because one of mine is just like that.

Here is my Cody, turning on the charm in hopes of getting some treats. He's a cutie but subtly is NOT his long suit.

That is a great picture of Lucky, Les! I see he shows some stripes with good lighting. We had a black cat for 16 years until we had to put him down because of sickness that showed stripes in bright lighting and Pepper also had a slight reddish tint to his fur in bright light too.

I must have missed this thread the first time around!

I love cats, but we're gone too much to have one. My mom and sister have almost a dozen between them, so I just visit them and call it good.

Yours is more blessed than lucky, but that's still a good name!

Thanks for the update.
It's amazing how much noise a small cat can make just scampering around.
'Specially when there's 3 of them rippin' around in the attic.

It is the wise man to send the GF across traffic on Friday the 13 to fetch a black cat.

My little kitty Bella showed up here at my camp, probably put out along the road by someone when she was about Lucky's age. She's just over 10 pounds now, and keeps me company when I'm here at the cabin. We have a few old, tired, neutered Tom cats who lay around doing pretty much nothing as well, and each was a rescue.

In fact, they are getting up there in years, and we were worried that they might all pass on and leave us catless, but I guess that isn't going to happen!!

Most of you have seen Bella, but here she is again:

Iggy, thanks for pointing out the family resemblance....

Best Regards, Les
You're a wonderful and caring guy! Lucky and Bella (and you) are truly blessed 😇

Yes please do keep them coming! I used to have 4 cats and a dog. My daughter has one of them still and the other 3 lived long happy lives with us. We have 2 very small dogs right now and they are so cat-like themselves. They were each small puppies when we got them and they were delightful with the kitties as they grew up. Logan is 3 and Jackson will be 11 next month. I wish we could have kitties again but with my husband's disability it would be difficult to have one at this time. So Les.b, I so enjoyed hearing about your sweet family! God bless you and your girl friend! May you always be as"lucky" as you are right now!

That's exactly how Sandy lays in my lap--as she is now a fan of Westerns....... Sandy also likes to watch Tucker Carlson and Sean Hannity on Fox--while I play computer games.

That is one pretty cat, and Lucky looks right at home on that quilt.

That cat knows he hit the jackpot.
