Smile Meet “Lucky”!!! Update: Happy 6th Anniversary!!! (Post #248)

Today, Friday 13th, I was coming home from taking the GF to a routine doctor’s appointment, beautiful fall day, driving down a secondary road, when we see a small black kitten starting to run out into traffic in front of us. There was traffic in both directions, and I couldn’t get stopped and turn around for a hundred yards or so. There was no question in our minds about just driving on.

So I get turned around, and finally get back up the road, and there he is, still trying to run out in the road. GF runs across and retrieves him, and off we go. Only a mile to our vets, we miss her, but the vet tech is just leaving, and she checked him out in the parking lot!! Looks healthy, and he is already sleeping in my lap, and is just old enough to eat kitten food.

Hey, black cat, running out in traffic, on Friday the 13th, what else could we call him but “Lucky”??

I don’t know how folks can put these harmless creatures out along a country road to fend for themselves. Well, I guess he has a good home now.

Best Regards, Les

Plumb proud of both of you for rescuing that little critter. You both got some more feathers added to your wings when you get to the pearly gates.

You're a good man Les and that little fellow's indeed lucky.
You made my wife go "aww, he's so cute."
I told her I would've named him Jason from the Friday the Thirteenth movies.

Les, Ya know the two of you kinda look alike.
Same eyes, noses kinda alike, purt near the same expression.
Both of you are right handsome fellers.

You two are off to a great friendship.

Good job Les.

Thanks, guys, ....every one of our dogs and cats have been "rescues" of one sort or another.

We are "watching" our dog Erma for a friend of the GF's who had to go into a nursing home.....10 years ago. My little kitty Bella showed up here at my camp, probably put out along the road by someone when she was about Lucky's age. She's just over 10 pounds now, and keeps me company when I'm here at the cabin. We have a few old, tired, neutered Tom cats who lay around doing pretty much nothing as well, and each was a rescue.

In fact, they are getting up there in years, and we were worried that they might all pass on and leave us catless, but I guess that isn't going to happen!!

Most of you have seen Bella, but here she is again:

Iggy, thanks for pointing out the family resemblance....

Best Regards, Les

I might be tempted to name a black cat on Friday the 13th Merlin, or Morrighan , if female. Probably a familiar of witches and magicians...

Hmmm...I have a shirt a lot like yours. Did you get that at L.L. Bean?

Thank you and your GF for saving the little dude and giving him a home. He's a cutie! I don't have any pets but I go just about every Saturday to the local Petsmart and see the dogs and cats that are brought in for adoption and visit with them. I've got some nice wounds on my right forearm from an overly rambunctious Calico kitten that got a little "bitey" while playing last weekend.

Les.b, that just warms my heart!

It reminds me of the black rescue dog (female corgi/terrier mix) I got on July 13:

Good on you & the GF Les !

My last 2 cats are 'strays' that were dumped in my friends retirement community in Az. Chloe lives with my GF now & Toby (my all black male) is here with me and the dog.

Don't know how people can do that to helpless creatures.

Yep!! My atavar is Marvin as Lt. Frank Ballenger, from "M Squad", which ran from 1957 to 1960. I watched it when I was a kid, and between it and "The Untouchables", with Robert Stack, I think I was imprinted with a love of police work and gun handling and shooting. Marvin mostly carried a Colt Cobra on the show, but in the photo I use, he has a Smith and Wesson.

By the way, I now have all of the episodes of both series on DVD!!! I still enjoy them as much as when I was a kid, but now understand that they aren't totally realistic. Still good fun.

Both Stack and Marvin knew how to use guns. Marvin was a Marine who was wounded in the Pacific Island campaigns during WWII, and is buried at Arlington.

Anyway, I hit on that photo when I joined the Forum, and still like it.

Maybe if I shaved....

Best Regards, Les

les-

In fact, I have a beard like that and look a lot like you.

I am going to shave. I really prefer the shaved look. But don't take it personally; I'm not doing it to avoid being mistaken for you.

I kind of dread it. The last time I shaved after a couple of weeks, it took almost an hour and I had to use four razors of varying shape and contour.

Thank you Les for you and your GF stopping and rescuing that cute little kitten. I'm sure Lucky will really enjoy having a family to grow up and live with. We get stray cats come and go all the time where we live. We have our inside cats, which stay strictly indoors, but we also have cats that have come by and adopted us and allow us to feed them too. We have 1 outside cat who we call Kitty (my wife ain't the world's most original cat namer) that wandered over as a kitten that has a clubbed left leg. My daughter looked it up and said they call it a bat wing deformity. She probably was discarded out around the house (a lot of that cr** happens where I live) and she is pretty tame with us for a wild cat. We also have a black/white male that hangs around, but the only time he allows anyone near enough to pet him is in the morning when we put out the food. And there is another real skittish young gray tabby type that has been coming around, but she won't allow anyone near her yet.

Les, I hope he bonds well with you and your other rescues and you end up with a long time cuddle buddy and lap warmer.
Enjoy him - they don't stay kittenish long enough.

Hey!! I used to drive through the upper corner of lower Alabama all the time, when one of my buddies used to live in Navarre, FL!!

That's a nice part of the world down there. Unfortunately he sold his house, and moved over north of Panama City, then sold that house, and moved back to WV.

But I enjoyed my time down there.

Best Regards, Les

It is exactly three months to the day that I got my dog. She is Number 7 for me. All of them had been abandoned, and all of them have been wonderful dogs. I wouldn't sell her for a million dollars.

Threads like this reaffirm, to me, that the Bard was correct; "the quality of mercy is not strained."

I'll take these over contentious threads any day.

Again, well done Les.

The 1000 “like” posts just keep coming! I was upset just getting home after my boy’s school pissed away thier homecoming game they had won. Now I am not the slightest bit upset. There is always the next game or season.

Just remember you don't own a cat, it just stays with you as long as it wants!
" What kind of a cat do you have?"
A spoiled one! Was my answer.

Yep you don't train cats.........they train you. I had a friend that was superstitious and if a black cat crossed in front of him he would turn around and take another way to get where he wanted to go.

That kitten was not running in and out of traffic. He was trolling for suckers and looks like he landed one! Rescue pets are always the best. My experience has been that they are always truly grateful to those who rescue them, they just sometimes have trouble showing their gratitude. You and your girl friend are good and kind people.

Good luck with Lucky,

Dave

My wife rescued a cat about 30 years ago. She was on a walk with our youngest daughter and heard some kittens crying. She searched out where the sound was coming from and out behind a local gas station was an unused barn. In there she found 6 tiny kittens (we guessed about 2 weeks old) upstairs, under a loose floorboard who had seemingly been left half starved for a few days. She got a box and brought all 6 home and started to feed them. One died that night but all the rest survived. When they got strong enough we gave all but one to various neighbors. The last we kept. She was spayed when due and we had her for 21 years. By far she was the best cat we ever had. We think she took to us so well because we had rescued her from certain death. She used to lay on pne of our laps, sometimes mine, sometimes my wife's, and in a short time she would crawl up and put her nose under our chin, to one side and piurr so loud we had to turn the TV up if we were watching.
She was an indoor/outdoor cat and she loved to be outside, sometimes overnight. At 21 she went out one night but didn't return when we called (often she would, but occasionally not). She never returned and it was winter, a very snowy one too. We found her that spring where she had laid under the deck, curled up where she died alone. She had no broken bones and She had not tried to get inside. When she wanted to come back in after we had gone to bed, she'd climb a maple tree outside our bedroom and cry for use to let her in just outside our window.
She was by far our best cat ever, and we'd have one or more again, except we found we are both allergic to cats about a year after our "Judy" died.
As far as abandoning cats, back in the 70's, my wife and I were helping my brother and his wife move into an old farm house they had just bought. We looked out just in time to see someone leave something in the mailbox. We knew it should not be mail yet, because the place had been vacant for over a hear and my brother had not had his mail sent there yet. He went to check, and it was a kitten. Had we not seen it, my brother was not going be be fully moved in for several days, as we were making repairs and putting in a woodstove/brick hearth so they would have heat. The furnace was not usable at that time. We're certain the cat would have died before it was found. Over the following years he often had additional cats just show up, apparently dropped off, but at least they were not put in the mailbox. He had a small farm, a few heaffers, one cow, several pigs, a team of draft horses and lots of barn cats.

Lucky is lucky he found you and you're lucky to have found Lucky. Let's hope he continues to avoid traffic and enjoy your lap instead. It's always nice to read of a good deed.

That was a very humane and caring thing you did...rescuing that little kitten.

There are far more people who would not have taken the trouble than there are people like you who genuinely care.

Best wishes to you and Lucky, and hoping you have a long and happy life together.

Good on you!

Thank you for providing for a little life which might otherwise have been cut short.

I'm sure he appreciates what you've done for him.

I'm not a cat person, but good on you for saving a helpless young animal from what would have been a short unhappy life.

If only one could reach into the photo and???.............. :-D Ive always thought I was a good judge of people with great character--well-you prove me correct once again. Hey-are you related to Rusty, Joe, Les, Jack, Paul, Wayne--and the list goes on??

that kitten is also the very lucky one-to find a willing subject such as you-especially on such a day is the 13th. Man, two more days to go till I get mine. :-))
