Default Just because you own a fast car.......

Had a car towed into the shop this week. 2017 Cadillac CTS-V. The V is a hot rod and books between 80 to 100G.
Body damage all over and the rear tires have cords showing. I completed an estimate based on what I could see and I wrote an estimate for $50,000!
While I wanted it to total it will not.

Back story is the owner was doing burnouts. Apparently a lot of them. Later while driving down the interstate a tire blows and it puts him into the wall.

Moral of the story is this, just because you own a fast car does not mean you can drive one.

A friend of mine had a t-shirt that read:

Ban low performance drivers, not high performance cars.

Default Hardly a surprise.

Some people should not drive high performance motor vehicles.

However, the tire did not cause the collision; driver's lack of skill caused it.

Be safe.

Lol. I remember a news story about the first Dodge Challenger Hellcat that was sold here in Colorado. The guy had it for all of about an hour before he crashed into a tree on a small, winding road not far from my house.

Big engine does not equal great handling on curvy roads. Light car like a Lotus or swb like a MINI, however, are a BLAST to drive on curvy roads....

There are dozens of YouTube vids about idiots crashing their Vette, Lambo, Porsche, Mazzerati, etc. Go ahead and show off in your new high performance car and let us know how that worked out. Yep, hold my beer and watch this...It is entertaining though, when it's someone else's car!

Every car is different and if you aren't used to driving at high speeds, it can get away from you.

I saw a clip where an Australian race driver was demonstrating a sporty little consumer car while giving a running commentary about the handling. The he says, "Uh Oh, trouble" and put the car on its roof. He demonstrates how to extract yourself from an upside down car then says, "Well, I didn't mean to do that."

Putting my snow tires on Saturday. Summer tires are shot, after less than 10k miles. No walls for me.

In order to drive a high power car you need very quick thinking and reactions. Otherwise the above happens.
I have seen top fuel dragsters that didn't back out in time hit the wall. You figure when something can travel the 1/4 in just over 3 seconds you don't have a lot of time to react before being out of control.
Some rich guy bought his teenage son a brand new Viper and the kid totaled it within 10 minutes after leaving the dealership. Teenager has no business getting a Viper for his birthday. The kid's father had way more money than brains for sure.

Unfortunately, people who own...and mistreat... $100,000 cars are very often the kind of people who can afford to do so. When you think about it that way, there doesn't seem to be much justice in the world.

On the other hand, the working people at the repair shop are going to make $50,000 of some rich person's stupidity, so maybe there's justice after all.

Back in 69 I had a 68 Firebird I built .. Raced it at local dragstrips and won a few bucks with it .. was still street legal ..

Sold it in 72 and someone bought it for their kid who had it less then a month before putting it through a brick wall and into a lake and drowned late one Saturday night .. the car was found the next day by someone walking their dog around the lake .. authorities estimated the speed was 95 miles per hour when he hit the wall and believe he went air borne with no sign of braking .. No tire marks the last 10 feet before the water .. the engine was pushed back to the bucket seats with the drive shaft broken sticking up through the floor and back seat ..

When I was in school in the ‘60s, there was a waitress in my freshman dorm who had an Austin Cooper S, the hot rod version of the Mini. For some reason, she would freely lend it to me and my friends. I will reserve comment on her judgment there. In any case, we liked to take it up on Grizzly Peak Boulevard and bait Corvettes. Never found one that could keep up.

Never forget as a kid some of the stunts we pulled? Why we are still here I’ll never tell you!
I had an Olds 442 great running car, could smoke’em real easy! But as a kid I learned early money doesn’t grow from the trees so we didn’t make a habit of laying rubber.
Now I get the idea this car needs new tires and I put the best handling tire of the day Michelin’s which cost me a pretty penny but they were the best road handlers!
Took this thing on a back country hill run, I mean there were some nasty turns on this road, was doing a lot of up shifting and downshifting with speeds from 50 to 75 miles per hour! I loved every minute of it and these tires held true to course for holding the road.
Nice I enjoyed this little road rally but the friend that was with me did not!
He said what are you nuts! this thing ain’t no MG ya know! I said yeah I know that but one thing I gotta say is I love those Michelin’s

That's really too bad. That would probably be the car I would own if I could afford it. No, I couldn't drive it at the speeds it is capable of and I wouldn't, but it's a lot more distinctive than a Corvette and has the about the same performance, might even be a better sports car in some areas. 640 HP and supercharged. Holy guacamole!

As a person that was a gear head since about age 13 and was the right age to appreciate the muscle car era of the mid 60s till early 70s I have seen and done a lot.

I have always had a vehicle of some sort with serious power. (still do see avatar)

I did drag racing both street and strip, worked on a stock car we ran at local tracks and even worked part time at my buddies speed shop/ garage so this thread got my attention.

Back in the early days we had narrow tires, big torque engines, 4 speed stick shifts and fishtailing at a full throttle start was very common. Most of us learned how to control that and skids in general.

Now the vechicles are loaded with nanny devices that do their best to protect the vehicle. You turn them off and the drivers of today have not a clue on how to drive. I live on a Vette forum and a lot of accidents happen (dumb drivers turn off nannies) as without electronic help many of the younger class drivers are totally lost.

Good driving is a lost skill and the more electronics they add makes a lot of problems worse if things go real bad suddenly.
I have had a couple Vettes that even with the nannies the car has so much power it takes the nannies a bit (second or two) to catch up and by then there is a big accident if you cannot REALLY drive!

As other have said the skill level of a lot of the public is down and they have the money to buy vechicles that contrary to their ego they do not know how to drive. Heck many of the new class drivers now do not know how to drive a stick shift!

The goal of the government is total control, so by controlling (and tracking) everything you do and everywhere you go and how you get there, the data they have is incredible. With driverless cars soon to be the norm in a few years, it will exacerbate the situation that much more.

Yes, I believe in certain conspiracies and no, I do not trust the government to have any free person's well being in mind.

High performance summer tires only last between 10 and 20 thousand miles due to the very sticky yet easily wore away rubber type compound that is used. Just because the cords were showing doesn't mean he was doing burnouts. People do not pay any attention at all when buying cars and some do come with very good yet short lasting tires. Person probably had 20 to 25 thousand miles on them and were worn completely out and did not even notice!

My Cooper S came with Pirelli high speed run-flat tires that lasted about 15K before being replaced. At almost $500/each that got pricey quick.

I got to thinking about these new cars that drive themselves and wondered just how well they could handle a 600 hp Camaro. LOL I can almost see an AI grinning from ear phone to ear phone. I just wonder what their speech program would say to brute power?
I read a story of a man that bought a new Corvette early 2000's and while he was driving around 70 on an interstate the car went into a total donut spinout. It scared his pants full and he had it towed to a dealer for warranty repair. 6 months later the car had been to several dealers trying to find out the cause of the spinout. I am willing to bet something in the traction or braking computer system took a pants full dump.

I mean really how much should we really trust these auto drive vehicles and how in the heck can a car parallel park itself? Is there somebody watching a monitor or is this AI intelligence built into our new cars?

Personally I think electronic steering is a scary thought and I have owned one. Gm had a huge recall on electronic steering failures. They say if the electronics go out then you can still turn the car. I don't agree with that being the case at all.

The car and its ability had little to do with the cause of this wreck. Neither did the drivers reaction time. Being brain dead and not thinking that the burn outs would damage the tires and drriving at sspeed without checking the tires.

You can't fix stupid!

Bolstered seats and peppy handling will never defeat the physics of only a square foot of rubber on the road.

One of my fondest memories was being at the Aintree Race Track (For LV Steve, there used to be a race track around the Grand National Course in Liverpool) in 1966 watching a race between Ford Galaxies, Corvettes and Mini Coopers. The winner to no "Limey's Surprize" was the mini. It effectively could turn square corners. The local Police in Brighton used to use Mini Coopers with the badges off and catch speedsters as the only difference visually from the rear was the 2" diameter exhaust pipe on the Cooper. AH those were the days!! Dave_n

When Ford came out with the new 5.0 32 valve dohc engine in the last generation mustang. Me and my dad was on the way to town one day. We saw this brand new high end mustang. Strips and all. Still had the temporary plates and stickers on the window. The car was covered in mud and the front of the car was crushed. It was limping to town. We pretty much have an idea of what happened to it.

When I first got my 1968 Torino GT. It was my first 4 speed car with a V8 and Holley carburetor. my parents took me to a rarely driven country road to teach me how to drive it.
It was both scary and awesome. The Torino kept fish tailing and sliding. No anti lock brakes and electronic traction control. I had to truly learn to drive it.

A WHP officer told me a this summer that there are plans for driverless 18 wheelers on I-80 some time next year.

If you have ever been on I-80 thru southern Wyoming in a blizzard, the thought of driverless trucks give me nightmares.

I would not want anything with more than 400 HP. That's plenty for me. I prefer handling over horsepower when it comes down to it. Much more fun to drive that way.

Reminds me of a local story from some years back. Local Chev. dealer's body shop took in a Lamborghini for minor repairs. Shop manager decides to take his son out for a ride. They miss a curve at an estimated 150-170mph (speed limit on the road in question was 45). Car rolls several times and then bursts into flame. Both killed.

I suspect the car's owner was NOT happy. He was probably well compensated by the dealership, though.

Yes. Just the bottom-budget 270. I don't even want the 620R or even the 420. And the original-spec, cheapest donut tires possible.

I was at the gas station yesterday and there was a plain Jeep Cherokee there with plates that said 427 Hemi. Not a very good handling package for that much power but it sure sounded cool.

In 69 while stationed in Alaska a guy had his old Jeep brought up on a flatbed .. He had a 327 Chevy engine in it producing close to 400 HP.. He would take it down on the beach and do burnouts in the sand .. cooking the sand till the top layer turned to glass ..

That is TILL .. always seems that "TILL" Pops up its ugly head ..

Well he had wheelie bars on the back of the Jeep and with the light weight could easily do wheelies on pavement with all that horsepower .. on the beach one day playing around cooking the sand he popped it a bit much when it hit some hard sand/rock mix and did the wheelie till the wheelie bar on one side suddenly sunk about 14 inches into a hole filled with water (quicksand).. torqueing the frame tearing the wheelie bar off the welded bracket it was fixed to and flipping the Jeep over sideways and backwards on its top .. bending the frame !! Totaling the Jeep that he had over 5000 dollars in it .. a whole lot of money when a new firebird was less then 3 grand at the time !! he tried to drive it but it wasn't safe over about 20 miles an hour .. he finally parted it out getting less then a grand for the tires and engine and racing seats .. and few other things off it ..

Come to find out he had done about the same thing to another Jeep he and his dad had built when he lived at home before he even had a license and before joining the AF .. but just took everything transferring parts to another frame he bought the one he had just destroyed .. In Alaska he couldn't find a bare frame for a reasonable price anyway !!

So he never did learn anything from it !!

He also wrecked a truck while up there before I left also .. his family had money and he was a only child which explained some of his actions ..

Default I'm gonna get a Ferrari......

....but I won't drive it over 25 mph so I can pick up young women. It can have a Volkswagen engine in it for all I care.

Drivers don't know what they don't know. I instruct/coach weekly at a local road racing track (Palmer Motorsports Park)and am absolutely amazed how poor the driving "skills" are for many who attend lapping day events. It does not matter how exotic the car or how powerful..it is their right foot and brain connection that get most of them in trouble. I usually don't go out in the first session to avoid the carnage. After lunch, most of the wannabe fast and furious sorts are either wadded up..or had enough of being passed and have left. Always an entertaining day to say the least.

In 1962 I had occasion to drive a '62 Corvette with a 427ci engine. 4-Speed with a spring loaded floor shift. While going about 50 mph I down shifted and stomped it. The car immediately got sideways and I just avoided an accident by the skin of my teeth. The car was way and gone over powered for it's weight.

As Clint Eastwood says, "A man has got to know his limitations." That was the day I learned mine. Fast, high performance cars are not for everyone.

I sold my 1868 elCamino SS clone to a college aged kid who ran it through a houses brick fence/wall and broke a telephone pole in half left it in the woman's yard and ran. I know this because the kid never had the title transferred into his name and somehow kept getting paper tags to drive it, without insurance.

Guess who's house the authorities came knocking on... I got to talk to the police chief tho, nice guy.

Kind like give a bunch of people powerful guns and turning them loose on the range.

Default I'm no expert...

... but I read that the early Mustangs were not high performance cars and were marketed mainly to young women. When everybody wanted one and had to have more power, it was said that the car was capable of high speed but the chassis tended to go in different directions.

1868 huh? I bet that had some real horsepower!

I had a 1995 Firebird Formula. The previous owner had done some mods to it and it was an 11 sec car. It was fun to drive, but could use some upgrades to make it a good handling car.

Fast forward to today and I have a 2008 Mini Cooper S. Not only is this car fast, but it handles like nothing I've ever driven. hands down the most fun car I've ever driven.

That said, I learned some time ago, going really fast on public roads is not wise. I'm usually not in a hurry anyway.

I may have had some moments of really poor judgment in my younger days. I did learn, and have been driving relatively modest cars for most of the last 30+ years. Even in these, I know I could get in trouble if I wanted to ... glad I don't.

62’s came with 327’s.
66 vette was the first one to have a 427 option afaik, in 65 the 396 was the “big block”.

The 327 was no slouch.

Only muscle car I owned was a mopar police interceptor. Can't remember the exact year but it was a 70's car. Best my nerves would allow was 140 in a chase on the interstate. I was later issued a big block Ford galaxy 500 but it did not compare to the mopar.

Most of my cars have been 6 cylinder, or small block V8s nothing high performance. In my youth the most important part of the car was the back seat.

My brother was the one into fast cars, I remember he had a 64, IIRC, Mercury Park Lane that garnered him several trophies at the drag strip.

I had a new 1969 Chevelle SS396 , my first new car. Eighteen months later I sold it to three guys who each came up with $900 cash. Three months later One of them killed himself in the car, attempting to run from the cops.

Fast forward to 1977. Sold a 1970 Nova SS with a 383 Cu inch small block. Four speed, good suspension, 4:88-1 rear, etc. It was a real eleven second car with slicks. Sold that to a friend of a friend who I'd once given a ride in the car...and ran it through the gears. He was impressed, so later bought it. He was at 100+, lost control and went airborne, hitting a phone pole. Also killed himself.

There are a lot of drivers that NEED the nannies we have now; traction control, abs, etc.

Post-Civil War El Caminos aren't as cool the earlier classic models. Just kidding, and all in good fun. I make typos all the time.

I got my driver license in '62 which was the start of the muscle cars. I have had & still own at least one vehicle which POWER. When I was younger I was the only one that turned a wrench on my cars and trucks.

I went through 442s, Mustangs, Cameros, Firebirds, Vettes, Chargers, Cudas, and just anything else that was Hi performance. I still have my '71 Hemicuda I bought in '71 and a totally restored all original matching numbers '69 Boss 429 Mustang I bought from the original owner (my uncle) about 15 years ago. The most fun high performance car I owned was a 62 Chevrolet Corvair Monza Spyder (this was my first car that I bought new) the turbo in thing upped it horse power by 100 ponys and with the way it handled it would get a little hairy driving this thing all out.
