At this stage in my gun collecting/shooting career, the guns that interest me are older, somewhat rare and in relatively good condition. All of the foregoing tends to make the guns I want not cheap (at least to me) and my purchases are few.
When I search online for the kind of guns I like, it often seems that all the ones I might be interested in are listed by high end dealers at high end prices. For example, a gun listed at $4,000 but which, in my estimation, would only fetch half of that on Gunbroker. There are no certainties with collectables, but I would be willing to buy such a gun if I was fairly confident that I would only take a 5-10% hit if I decided to sell quickly. But I do not want to buy a gun for $4000 if I thought I was paying a $2000 premium over the market price.
With the Internet, overhead for an FFL operating out of their home is merely the carrying cost of inventory, and not even that if the guns are on consignment. Do these online dealers actually get their advertised prices or is it just an invitation to deal and actual purchases at these seemingly inflated prices are few and far between.
P.S., if it would work, I would want tell these dealers that I am interested in a particular gun, and I will give them 10% more than any bona fide offer they have received in the past year.
