I like watches...
...but not all are the same. Take a look at these two:
I've had both of these for about two years. Now, I'm hard on watches because I wear them all the time. Because I like to do a lot of outdoor stuff, they tend to get whacked from time to time.
I like the digital because it is synchronized to the WWV signal and is always on the right time. It's also solar powered. So, no batteries and no need set it. It also has timer, stop watch, altitude and barometer functions which I use more often than you might think. But I've never been a real big fan of digital watches.
The analog one has tritium hands and marks. It's really easy to read in low light or no light. I can't read without my glasses, but I can tell where the hands are at a glance.
Even though these cost about the same, they are clearly not the same build quality. Take a closer look:
Casio ProTek
Luminox Recon
The Casio has no scratches on the crystal. It's just got a few smudges on the glass. I should have cleaned it before the pic. But when you look at the bezel, it looks like it's been through a war.
On the other hand, the Luminox looks relatively new. If you look closely, there's a tiny dent in the 24hr ring right near the 24hr mark. Other than that, it doesn't look like there's a mark on it. I don't know what this watch is made from, but it's tough.
I'd buy either of these again, but the Luminox is really a good watch.

Question; You said the Luminox has Tritium hands and hash marks... I didn't think civilians could get the good stuff any more. Could they be phosphorescent instead of radio active?
Ivan
ETA:The thread is about liking watches; Yes, I like watches! My favorite is a Vietnam era Hamilton watch issued to my best friend. It has Tritium hand and hour pips. (they are dark now days, when I'm done with it I'll probably have the National Guard service depot dispose of it.) When my kids were teenagers, they thought I was kidding when I said it had to be wound up every day! It would lose about 5 minutes a month, if you kept it wound.
I had a used Rolex Presidential (day/date) with a Jubilee band, it got absconded with by my jeweler. He spent a few years as a sex toy in prison, very bad decision on his part! I would set the watch with the navigation shortwave radio on January 1st every year and check again on July 4th, mine gained about 35 seconds every 6 months. That would last about 5 years and then need serviced and cleaned, which was why my jeweler had his hands on it in the first place.

I use copies of military issue watches(might be surplus or Timex) tough and keep good time. Have a dress watch but never use it . Have to have hands on them so I can read them.

I have worn a Victorinox Swiss Army for over the last 20 years. I bought it NIB at a garage sale for about $10 back in the mid-90s. It has kept perfect time (it gains a couple of seconds a month) and has never needed any attention other than replacing the battery every 3-4 years. It's on its third band (which is on its last legs), but I already have the 4th band waiting. The crystal shows a lot of minor scratches but it's still OK. Why would I need a Rolex, except to show off?

I remember that my father had one of the first digital watches from the early 1970s, a Hamilton LED. It was very expensive, I think it was around $1000. He bought it as a retirement present to himself. I sold it several years ago for about $100, it was pretty beat up.

Citizen Eco Drive watches are great. No batteries. Have worn one daily for ten years with no problem. Also have a Caravelle by Bulova and a Pulsar by Sieko that were service awards from my work that have held up well for years.
Question: Does anyone wear their watch on the underside of their wrist rather ( like me) rather than on the top? My dad a WWII and Korean War vet always wore his that way and I guess that's how I picked it up. Maybe an old school or military thing?

Forty-dollar Timex here. I like the Indiglo dial, very handy in a dark tent. I have some mechanical Russian military-style watches, probably not the real thing and way too clunky to wear.
One watch I would like to own is the Movado Museum watch, but I never wear a suit any more; it would look way out of place with Carhartts.

Back in 1994, I decided to treat myself and bought a Cleveland Indians watch made by Bulova. It has a picture of Chief Wahoo right on the face of the dial so there is no question of who I root for. I have worn in every day since and all I've had to do is change a lot of batteries. I guess it will be more valuable after they stop using Chief Wahoo in 2019.

They can keep.....
They can keep digital watches, I don't care how they look. First, I need a watch with hands so I can tell what time it REALLY is. Second, mechanical watches are even more incredible to admire than good workmanship in a gun. I've spent some time watching videos of people making those them by hand. I was amazed at the geometric method they used to space teeth around a gear wheel.
I have some pocket watches and a few nice clocks, but I would just like to have ONE really good Swiss watch.
Make it a pocket watch. I don't wear anything on my wrists anymore.
PS: An Audemars Pignet would be nice, but I may be shooting a little high. Their cheapest watches would equal a new car.

I always buy watches with Roman numerals on them. It's fun to show a young person (and a lot of older folks too) the watch when they ask the time. Always get a double-take.

Unboxing my Seiko SNZG15 Seiko 5 Sport Automatic Watch a little over a year ago. I've been wearing it nearly everyday since. Only time I don't wear it is when hiking, biking, camping or anytime I think I need to wear my Garmin gps watch.
It's usually accurate to within a minute a month. Works for me.

Count me in. Got the Seiko black and orange monster models. Right now looking at the new Seiko model SRPA-21 PADI diver with turtle case. Better movement and also auto with wind. Many dive watches from the past selling for good money on E-Bay.

I'm hard on watches, too. That's why I buy the cheapest Timex and Casio. They seem to last longer than the expensive ones and I don't cuss when I break them.

"One watch I would like to own is the Movado Museum watch"
In the 1980s I had a Seiko which very closely resembled the Movado Museum watch, and from any distance, anyone seeing it would assume it was one. It lasted about 10 years, not worth the cost of having it fixed when it gave out. Back in the 1970s I wore a Seiko Auto 5 (a mechanical auto-wind) I bought for peanuts when I was working in Colombia. A good watch, but after 7-8 years it got so it wouldn't run reliably, and again, at least to me, it didn't seem to be worth the cost of getting it cleaned, which was more than I paid for it new. It went into the junk drawer until I sold it on eBay a few years back.

I only have 4 watches. My favorite is a Movado Moon Phase. I have a Raymond Weil that is pretty much my every day watch, a Jubilee self winder that Mrs gave me on our wedding day in 1976, and one off brand that I can't remember buy we really liked the metal band. None of them have numbers on them for the hours.

Heck yeah I like watches. Co-workers used to ask me why, when cell phones are so prevalent. But, I don't have a smart phone, and I noticed they would always ask me what time it was the few seconds a day they weren't glued to theirs.
This Casio G-shock is 20+ years old, I still wear it when shooting, kayaking, or working outside.
Before I retired, I used these two manual wind Chinese watches. Both of them have sapphire crystal faces and backs. Over the years I have come to prefer arabic numerals and no date:
My sporty casual watch is a Glycine sub:
I guess I don't have pictures of the two I were most often these days since I retired. A Casio Pathfinder (I think they changed that to Pro-Trek) PAW 2000, because I'm lazy. Solar battery, syncs via radio wave with the atomic clock each night, always ready to go when I wear it once a week. For the rare social occasion, a Grand Seiko Spring Drive. Somebody is always willing to argue (and I am not ), but most watch people consider it the first really new movement since the quartz watch.
A Week On The Wrist: The Grand Seiko Spring Drive Snowflake SBGA211
I have a couple of others, but I'm getting embarrassed by how much stuff I have.

“Takes a lickin’ and keeps on tickin’!”
Timex Ironman Triathlon—well over 10 years old I think. The hunks gnawed out of the bezel are from my cats chewing on it when I am petting them in my lap. I never take it off. All our cats like to gnaw on it on my wrist for some reason.
A lot of the lettering is worn off, and the night illumination no longer works, but I think I have gotten my $20 something bucks out of it.

I have not worn a watch since I got a cell phone. I have large hands and wrists, mechanical bands hardly ever have enough extra inserts to let them fit with any slack at all. Most straps either tore when I worked in them or my sweat was salty enough they wouldn't last 18 months. By then the crystals were scratched enough they were tough to read. I also needed to be precise about time when dealing with work reports as well as needing a second hand or stop watch to calculate flows.
I tried one last week after 9 months of retirement and it only lasted 3 hours. Call me less than full dressed or what ever but they are not for me.

I like watches, but I've never been able to afford a really nice watch. A Hamilton automatic field watch is on my want list. I don't know if they still offer it, but West Coast Time was offering a frankenwatch automatic a few years ago that pretty much met all my needs/wants in a watch. Couldn't afford it, though.
I do have a Luminox watch. It's not one of their diver watches, though. It's more like a military field watch. Stopped working. At first I thought the battery needed changing. As it turned out, I guess it got bumped one time too many and the hands started rubbing together, keeping it from running properly. I had a local repair shop I trust fix it, but it happened again. I probably should've sent it back, but I decided to just get another watch. I'm not interested in getting another Luminox. From what I've seen, customer satisfaction seems to be a bit mixed on the brand.
My current watch is a Casio G-Shock. I like it because I don't have to worry about it getting dinged up and I can change the battery myself. I got an adapter so I could use a nylon NATO-style wrist band (I don't like resin bands). I also have a Timex Expedition analog with a leather band that I like, but it's been dinged up a bit. I haven't worn it much since getting the G-Shock.

The cost to tune up the Rolex is more then the 3 other watches cost!
And the Citizen watches keep better time and never need batteries and
get up dated from WWV.

I have the opposite problem. I have relatively small wrists, and most of the larger men's diver watches (watch face bigger than 36-38mm or so) I've tried on looked like a novelty item on me because they were so big.

My 2 old mechanical Heuer are from before Tag came along. And I do wear them.
Safe Queens are not my forte, not even in firearms.

I think mine's a pre Tag auto chronograph. I'll try to get a pic later.

Luminox is the best!
I’ve had My Luminox so long that the tubes are starting to fade(13 years). The bezel and case are scratched up some, but the face looks like the day I bought it. I found a place in Hong Kong that will replace the tritium tubes, but they want $200 to do it and have a healthy disclaimer that if they mess it up, it’s not their fault. It’s still readable in a dark room after my eyes are dark adjusted, and that’s the only time I need the illumination. I can’t read the date any longer without my glasses, so I don’t even bother changing it at the first of the month.

Here's another one. I don't know why I do it, been doing it forever.

VaTom: my Dad was career AF (33 years) and I remember pilots wearing their watches on the underside of their wrists. It was so they could tell the time without taking their hands off the yoke (steering wheel), especially in combat.

My Dad did that also......somewhere I heard/read it minimized the 'glow in the dark" hands exposure .........

I have an older Tag Heuer, thinking about upgrading to the Tag Formula 1. Also have an Omega Seamaster that I like. Looked at the Steve McQueen Tag Monaco for an investment piece; it's kind of neat. The Rolexes get a little pricey for me but they are nice.

And here is my first watch bought with my own money back in 1976 and that went down with me at 118 mph in my Kawa 900 in 1983.
Still ticking after all these years.

The new Monaco is a pale image of the real deal.
And maybe you can find a real 1970s Monaco cheaper then the reproduction.
The first reproductions of the Carrera I were much closer to the originals.

I have probably a half dozen, couple Seiko's, Casio, fake Rolex and a Glycine Airman 24 hour watch. I haven't worn a watch since I retired 6 years ago.

I collected RR pocket watches for several years. I hardly ever look at them these days. It may be time (time get it) to move them on. Any suggestions as to a fair and reliable dealer of must I sell through the popular auction site. I didn't maintain my membership in the NWACC.

The Citizen EcoDrive in the center is my everyday work watch. Counterclockwise from it is my 1920s Elgin that is my "stepping out" watch. It is in excellent condition and keeps very good time. Next is a Majestime that belonged to one of my grandparents. The movement is in excellent condition but the case and crystal are broken. I hope to someday find a new case for it. Last is my maternal grandfathers Buren. He drove a grader in WWII and for twenty years after that. It looks beautiful but unfortunately does not run. I have already tried getting it fixed with no luck so it will become a shadowbox watch with some other pieces of his.
