Default Movie review

We rent and stream a lot of movies from netflix. One of my favorite things is when we get a movie that we enjoy so much that it just blows us away. A total surprise!

I guess most of us have seen at least one Jackie Chan movie. A shallow story boosted by action and some humor. He makes lots of quick furtive moves that happen so fast you hardly have time to see it happen.

And I have never been much of a fan of Pierce Brosnan. But he has finally matured in to a very fine actor. When he was young he was little more than a pretty face and a good haircut and he looked like he was about 16 years old. But he has some serious acting skills these days.

The name of this movie is THE FOREIGNER. Even if you think you are not much of a fan of either of these actors I highly recommend this movie. Jackie Chan has now entered a new level of acting. In this movie he is a study of an older, very serious character. Very quiet and deliberate and VERY determined.

Pierce Brosnon gives a riveting performance. Very powerful.

The concept of the plot is not new but there are very few cliches and it is such a focused story so powerfully and skillfully told you hardly notice.

Yes there is some action but for once Jackie's acting gets on top of the action, at least that is my opinion

I usually send a movie right back after watching it bit I'm gonna keep this and watch it some more before I let it go.

Do yourself a favor and watch this movie...

I saw it when it came out in the theaters last year. I thought it was a very good movie, definitely unlike anything I've ever seen Jackie Chan in before.

The only problem I had with it was the timeline for his character's backstory was a little confusing to me, but that was a very minor issue. I'll probably watch it again on video to see if I just missed something.

Thanks for the heads up. "The Foreigner" just happens to be next up in my Netflix queue.

I saw it for sale on DVD recently as wally world and thought about buying it. Now as I know we have kinship-like tastes in Westerns-I know this will be worth the money spent so--------ill see if they still have a copy for sale and buy it tonight since I have to go there for some other stuff.

Sounds like it might be a good movie. I like both Jackie Chan and Pierce Brosnan. I always thought Pierce Brosnan was a good James Bond, but was given some of the worse movies in the series - with the exception of Goldeneye.

Not sure but I'd guess either PG 13 or R. Some language and some violence so it could be either I guess.

I agree about Golden Eye. The opening scenes where Bond rides a motorcycle of a cliff after a falling airplane and gets inside of it and flies off is the best ever and I don't see how that will ever be out done. Brosnan was a good Bond.

Favorite Bonds always create a lively thread as YMMV.

Here's my Bond ranking: Roger Moore #1, Daniel Craig #2, Sean Connery #3, Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan tied at #4, George Lazenby #5 (only because I haven't seen OHMSS yet).

Well I have always believed that some of the various Bonds brought something to the show. Except for Lazenby. What a total dork! Not cool. Not smart. Not tough. And to make it worse he got to have the very best of the "Bond girls", Diana Rigg.

For example Roger Moore put a little humor into the character. Daniel Craig added intensity. I thought Dalton, a stage actor, over acted some of the time. Not unusual for those with stage experience such as Charlton Heston.

I would order them like this:
#1. Sean Connery. He was the TOTAL package, he had it all.
#2. a toss up for Craig and Brosnan. They were different but both very good.
#3. Roger Moore. He sometimes over did the glib, tongue-in-cheek bit.
#4. Timothy Dalton
#5. The very doofus George Lazenby. And he wasn't helped by the fact that this was the worst of all the bond movies. It was a silly mess.

I very much enjoyed the conflict between Bond (Brosnon) and M (Judy Dench.) She was most excellent in that roll much better than those stuffed shirts that did it before her. Daniel Craig also had his innings with her. She was tough and smart and held her on with both of the bonds...mostly.

BTW, You need to see OHMSS. Good story and great introduction to Craig's verion of Bond

I always wonder...and worry...who will be the next Bond. Daniel Craig has grumbled on occasion about how this latest film might be his last. Hard to believe that any actor would not follow through and see it to the end. I would imagine it's a great honor to play Bond alongside such giants as Connery and Moore.

OK, as were in a mood for picking favorite Bonds-mine are in this order:
Though I did hate View To A Kill, loved the rest.

I grew up watching both, so both are co-equals as Nr 1's.

Dalton and Lazenby are equals as neither made enough Bond films to make a groove for me.
Lastly-the clown that is now Bond. I DO like him but-his politics tick me off.

I actually just watched The Foreigner, and really enjoyed it. Thought Jackie did a real nice job on the "heavy" moments; it was nothing like the usual 'Rush Hour' stuff he's more known for.

And yes, thought the film was quite powerful.

Funny, I've always liked George Lazenby in OHMSS. Maybe it was because Diana Riggs was in it, and that was enough when I was a teen, and still is today. I've got a copy of on DVD.

But then I've never seen a "bad" Bond movie.

I have. Diamonds Are Forever and Live and Let Die never worked for me. Diamonds was just plain bad and Live And Let Die's unlikely combination of 007 and Blaxploitation was a recipe for disaster. JMHO of course.

Diana Rigg carried that film. However, I think Lazenby did a good job in the film. There were two scenes that I think he did perfectly. The first was were Bond was sitting in the skating rink looking very defeated only to be rescued by Rigg, and the other was the ending. As much as I believe Connery to be the best, I don't think he could have shown that more vulnerable side of Bond in those scenes.

Jack:

Based solely on your recommendation here I rented The Foreigner from Netflix. I, too, have never been a fan of Chan or Brosnan. The whole kung fu thing eluded me. Brosnan was always too polished to be believable to me.

However, I must now re-evaluate that view. This was an excellent action film. Predictable in some ways, it nonetheless accelerated at the beginning and never let off the gas. The IRA/Northern Ireland/British dispute seems like ancient history to me, but this nice bit of film fiction brought it up to date. Both Chan and Brosnan were convincing which, after all, is the standard for acting, isn't it?

I will recommend this film to others looking for a good action film. Thanks for the tip. Got any others?

Speaking of Bronan...

Anyone know when/if the next season of 'The Son' is starting? Definitely not the guy you want as a neighbor!

Well, nothing new but I finally watched Wind River and was greatly impressed. The directing, acting and production design were excellent. as well as the screen writing. The dialogue was understated and very dramatic. I heartily agree with all the positive reviews.

Connery and Craig are my top two. Craig's portrayal is almost exactly the book character with the exception the Bond in the books were portrayed as having black hair.

Lazenby was horrible at acting, but the plot of "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" was a decent one IMO that could possibly been much better with Connery at the time.

Jackie Chan was really good in The Karate Kid remake which I saw part of accidentally. It was very dramatic and completely different for him. And Pierce Brosnan is great when he plays twisted or criminal characters. Check out "The Matador" where he plays a hit man really well. A film full of moral dilemmas.

Stayed up late and watched this last night, DVD loan from the library.
Good twist on the old story albeit a bit far fetched but it's entertainment.
An example of men trying to do the right thing but not good guys.
Chan's telling Brosnan's character "You'll change your mind" was an excellent movie moment.

I finally saw It Comes at Night. Nothing like the trailer or marketing suggested, but in a good way. Really well done, tense film.

If a movie doesn't have horses, six shooters, cowboys, Indians, and pretty girls why bother watching it ?

(yes, Jimmy still lives under a bridge )
P.S. I like Glocks

I've never been much of a James Bond fan but did watch some of the original stuff when it came out. Attempted to watch most or all of the secondary actors that played the role. Quite poor by comparison with Sean Connery, an actor with many better roles in a variety of films.

As for Jackie Chan movies...
