Simple Pistol Rack Made From Cardboard
(Note: Template in post 34)
I have a few guns....and I was tired of the pistols and revolvers lying around on the shelves in my safe. I priced various pistol racks, and either I did not like what I found or what I liked I deemed too expensive.
Amazon shipping boxes are now ubiquitous, so I thought I'd try to make a pistol rack from cardboard.
Success! The box is about 5.75" deep, and 3.5" high. Each slot is 1.5" wide.
The only material costs are a few dabs of glue and some duct tape - pennies. The trick is to cut small slots in the bottom and side of the box where the dividers go, and then have long tabs on the dividers that extend through the bottom and side of the box. Fold the tabs over, glue and tape. Very sturdy.

I would worry that Amazon doesn't use archival quality, acid free cardboard in their shipping boxes. I fact I would about guarantee it.

Seems the cardboard could absorb moisture and have acids... would be a better idea to do with KYDEX... yes... that would be fantastic! But you'll get the royalties since you're the inventor!

Hmm, that I did not consider. I could probably line it with the multiple sheets of S&W paper that I've collected over the years. I have more than a few of those sheets....

How about that that corrugated plastic they make the cheap signs out of? It looks just like cardboard, but it’s plastic. If I can find some around the house, I’ll post a picture.

Staples sells a whole array of file or envelope organizers , in both metal or plastic. You could just lye them all nose down without the need to cut a barrel notch for each one.

Great Rack!
Keep thinking boys, but it's going to be very hard to beat his cost, the small foot print for that many guns, it is frame size adjustable, and all mistakes can be used for heat in the shop stove! I just did the numbers for one made of oak and the space loss in my safe from the foot print is not acceptable!

Great idea in the OP. I would think that this a prototype and take a look at some of the suggestions for alternate materials. If you're dead set on using cardboard, you could research non-acid paper, tin foil, clinging plastic wrap, whatever works best to line it with.

What is "tin" foil?
You mean Al- O- Min- E- Um (English version)
But then there would be dissimilar metals and possible electrolysis.
But when in doubt, Black Spray Paint!

I did not yet read all the good suggestions so far, and this may be a duplicate but I would make the bottom section at least double thick so if you wish to take out all the guns at once, you can just pick up the box.
Is that picture a "C G I" ? or do you actually have ALL the J frames ?

Make the next one a double decker. Twice the guns on the same footprint. Spray paint with black bed liner.

I know there are engineers here that can make this difficult.
Who uses "shellac" these days other than old world wood work restoration?
Spray Poly or clear coat.

Here you go....
The box template with cuts for folds and slots for spacer (I made this box with 1 5/8" slots instead of 1.5" slots.

After I finished, I removed all tape, cut some additional pieces of cardboard to cover the back and sides and glued them to the back and sides. I then sprayed with polyurethane spray. After drying I sanded the interior sufaces with 1000 grit paper to get rid of rough surfaces. End result is a pretty sturdy little rack.

I started doing that with my cardboard boxes out in our unheated, unairconditioned shed. Holds papers, books, whatever. It has helped them last better in that environment.

Nice idea. I find it funny how we will have what 3-4k in the six guns, but we don't want to spend any money on a rack. Don't get me wrong I am not hating here because I do the exact same thing. I remember watching a guy burn 1k at the **** table in Vegas in about 15 minutes. His wife walks up with a shopping bag and as he walks away I hear him saying, what the he** are you wasting money on that for ? Funny stuff.
