There is a story, possibly apocryphal, that when Charle de Gaulle visited Great Britian, he asked Winston Churchill if, in the interest of better Franco-British relations, the London train station at Waterloo could not be renamed.

Sir Winston is reported to have replied that it might be possible, did Le Generalle prefer London-Crecy or London-Agincourt.

If it isn't true, then it should be.

That sounds like the greatest man of the 20th century. From what I've read, engage him in repartee and you lose.

Lady Astor: Winston, you are drunk.
Sir Winston: And you, madam, are ugly. But I shall be sober in the morning.

Lady Astor: If I were your wife I would poison your coffee!
Sir Winston: And if I were your husband I would drink it!

Even though his way of thinking may have fallen out of favor a bit in the 21st Century, I continue to admire Winston Churchill for his diplomatic fortitude and his unwavering sense of his own destiny and his supreme self confidence.

For me, he was the premier example of "statesmanship".

I was still in high school when he passed away. It made me incredibly sad.

Thank you for the reccomendation. Picked up a copy on Sunday, just finished it. Would definitly recommend it.

Loved the part where Caxton Street's first foray into false documents resulted in a set of passports with consecutive numbers. Oops.

I remember reading somewhere that deGaulle was such a primadona jerk during the war that the British SOE seriously considered killing him off in the interest of having the war effort go more smoothly. No idea of it is true or not, but it is sure a good story.

You have to give the guy credit, though:

I don’t think anyone else would have had the chutzpah and persistence to turn the France of 1940 into one of the four “victorious Allies” in 1945. DeGaulle aggravated everybody, but it worked. Not only did he get France a seat at the table and her own occupation zones in Germany and Austria, but also “great power” status as one of the Big Five in the new UN.
