I don't think this bodes well for our country. People say "Oh, just tax it, it's harmless." Look how many impaired drivers there are on the roads now. What will it be like if weed is dirt cheap?

Heck, even at $4 a gram, that's still over $100 an ounce. All I can say is that those growers need to grow under natural light instead of in artificial lighting and cut their growing costs by an order of magnitude if they want to make some profit. I know nothing about growing the stuff or even buying or smoking it as I haven't done any of that since I was in my early 30's, so I have no clue whatsoever that sells for nowadays. But to me it sounds like they are over-engineering this if they can't make a profit at $100+ an ounce.

The law of supply and demand. Not a federal law or state law.

But if you don’t follow this law, there will be consequences.

These people are just learning something farmers have known for eons.

It is a young market that needs to find itself. The states where it is legal will find ways to cooperate and work with the supply and demand problems. Don't worry about it being too cheap, the states will fix that with added taxes. Give it another five to ten years and the you will have the majority of states legalizing it and there will be a national market, it should be interesting to watch.

A good example of the rush to fill a market demand gone stupid with greed.

An interesting example, but only because of the product. Otherwise just one of many, I'm afraid.

Lots of overhead if you're growing and selling legally not too mention the taxes and they are still competing with the black market

Interesting article not that I know much about the subject, but I do remember reading something on a 4473 about something similar.

I and my sister are " two of a kind " in this respect . Neither one of us has ever smoked marijuana , held it etc . We have no tattoo's , no piercings and have never done any kind of illegal drugs . We both had our time riding Harleys , but stayed away from those influences . When it comes right down to it , it's all about " the choices that we make " . She loves to shoot revolvers , her favorite is a nickel S&W 57 , 4" barrel . She is a better shot than her husband . Regards , Paul

Weed is big business. I'm antiquated with a young man who is a foreman on a cannabis farm in California. They provide him with a company truck, company house to live in with utilities and groceries and on top of that, he makes $70,000+ per year.
The down side is that he's on call 24/7. But he's happy with it.

Do like the rice farmers down here do. Store it in the silos until the price goes back up and they can sell it. Meanwhile take the acreage and raise crawfish until the price and demand dictates planting again.. Welcome to farm economics 101!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Our pal Chuck Schumer of New York plans to lead the charge of the Federal legalization of marijuana. Apparently the phrase "the end justifies the means" applies to how you're re elected. I'm 70 and during my lifetime I've seen a 180 degree turn around everything the greatest generation fought for. I hope and pray they can forgive us.

The pot growers need to learn from the big oil companies on how to pretend there's a low supply to maximize profits

I see "greed" mentioned a few times in this thread.

Growing/selling marijuana for recreational and/or medicinal purposes is a business. There isn't anything altruistic about it. The goal of going into business, any business, is to earn a profit. That's a basic concept of capitalism.

I can probably think of a few handguns for which Smith & Wesson overestimated the demand. Ditto for Ruger and Colt.

The growers in Oregon obviously overestimated the demand for their product. So what? That doesn't make them greedy, just makes them not very business savvy.

I spent a lifetime in the produce business. When mother nature is smiling the crops grow lush and bountiful while the price goes in the *******. Too much good stuff.

When mother nature is mad she might send a hurricane through Texas, Mexico or Florida or maybe a flash freeze during blossom setting time. Quality and yield falls and prices go up. The farmer in California that didn't get hit by bad weather fattens up when other regions suffer. Just the nature of the business.

I think pot farming will get it worked out, $4 a gram is still $1800 a pound for a weed. Ought to be a little profit there.

The problem the growers have is they can't import their stuff across state lines. Imagine if the rice or sugar cane farmers could only sell their produce inside of Louisiana Oregon only has so many people who can physically smoke only so much weed. They certainly can't ship it overseas as overseas they grow their own. Producing is only half the business equation-there has to be a market for what you produce or you ain't gonna make a profit no matter how efficient you are.
This is going to be interesting to watch this nationally to see how the economies of the industry shake out. I imagine this will define it more than any federal or state regulation will.

Is that due the federal law banning growing, selling, using marijuana? I'd guess that federal LE could use the Interstate Commerce Clause for enforcement.

The ICC seems to be one of the most widely used (and abused) parts of the Constitution.

Working for a defense contractor, I have been reminded that we are subject to federal law. If we happen to be in a state where marijuana is legal, we are STILL subject to federal law and random drug testing and should refrain from partaking. We risk fines and termination if we were to test positive.

I work in the oil drilling industry and we are also subject to the same laws and rules. It doesn't matter where you live or what the laws are like where you live. If you light up hot on a pee or hair follicle test, you are terminated.

This thread's already walking on a tightrope. I'm gonna go out on a limb here with a wild guess and say I don't think we want to get into talking about street prices for dope in different parts of this country on this forum.

It won't be very long before weed is subsidized like everything else and farmers will get paid not to grow it. I hate the corn/gasohol thing, what a waste of taxpayers money.

Something else for consideration. The insurance companies will not insure you. Get hurt on the job and test positive for weed no matter when you smoked it and guess what???? No medical bills paid, no comp indemnity weekly benefits paid, no nothing plus you are out of a job for violating the mandated (by the insurance companies in order to even get comp cpverage in the first place) company zero tolerance policy. Unfair...perhaps but you work for da man you play by da man's rules........

Always has been a lot of money in weed. I would bet some have made enough to retire early.

Absolutely, considering how much some people pay for Scotch, Bourbon,Gin and expensive Cigars.

But of course that is OK cause it is legal now.

"I don't think this bodes well for our country. People say "Oh, just tax it, it's harmless." Look how many impaired drivers there are on the roads now. What will it be like if weed is dirt cheap?"

What's one more thing?

Alcohol, Sativa/Indica, Prescription Drugs legal/illegal, newspapers, breakfast/lunch/dinner, cell phones, texting, non licensed individuals, beautifying oneself while driving, non signaling drivers, speeders etc.

At least the potheads will probably slow everything down on the highway.

Send this guy up to Oregon, he'll help take care of that overgrowing.

Wish I could say the same. That's excellent.
Can you honestly say you've never deserved one?
