Default Tri-focal reading glasses

I'm of the status that now focusing on iron sights is somewhat difficult and I've been starting to shift over to optical sights. But I don't want to drill and tap what could be collector pieces. So one day I was in Staples looking at the reading glasses rack and saw reading glasses that had three bands in the lenses. The middle band was for the listed strength and was specified for computer work. The bottom band was a little weaker and was for regular reading. But the top band was at half the stated power and the focus was stated as being "across the desk." To me that represented arm's length plus a gun barrel. These glasses were somewhat more expensive than most reading glasses but I had a coupon and I keep reading glasses in all my coats and vests so I bought a pair.

Today I went to my club's indoor range and I took the glasses and an iron sighted .22 target pistol. When I aimed without the new glasses, I couldn't maintain a focus on the front sight. But when I put the glasses on, the front sight had somewhat of a blur but it was stable and the focus I had on the front sight was constant during the whole string of fire. I was shooting groups with iron sights that I hadn't been able to shoot in a long time. The new reading glasses are now permanently contained in my gun box.

Make sure those glasses offer enough eye protection for you. One day at my range, I forgot to put on my safety glasses, and just wore my regular prescription ones. Although my regular glasses are shatterproof and met my range's standards for eye protection, they had an Achilles heel. I discovered it when a hot ejected shell lodged in the open space between my eyebrow, the lens frame, and the temple piece, almost touching my eye. I've not forgotten my safety glasses since. If you can insert a finger into the space between the hinges of your glasses and your eyebrow, the glasses are not offering sufficient coverage, so be sure to wear safety goggles over them.

It sounds to me like you need to see an optometrist. Find out just what your needs are and many will address the "front sight" problem, and can make you lenses that focus on the front sight. I once took my competition air pistol to the the office and he set up a lens to directly focus on the front sight.

I had cataract surgeries on both eye's and need almost no correction for distance, but I still can't see clearly anything 8-10 ft and closer clearly. I was carrying 3 pair of glasses around, one to read by, one to see items on a store shelf, and sun glasses. after I got frustrated I just had no line self darkening trifocals glasses made up like I had been wearing for 30+ years.
