Just saw these special purpose Fords out in the motel parking lot.
They are here for what purpose?

Looks like it is set up for use on train tracks. Why it is in the motel parking lot, I can't say for sure.

Mystery Sighting in Ruidoso
These special purpose vehicles are used by railroads to transport employees and equipment to needed sites. The wheels can be extended for railroad movement or the trucks can be driven on roads.
The employees are staying at the motel for meals and rest.

50 miles or so from nearest railroad tracks.
Cannot find company name on trucks.

There's a "maintenance of way" outfit called Herzog Railroad Services. They operate all over the country keeping the tracks up to spec. Could be some of their guys. Joe

Possibly.
The railroad runs N-S on the West side of the Mountains.
Ruidoso is on top of the Mountains.
The RR Goes through places like - Carrizozo, Tularosa and then Alamogordo.
Several nice motels in Alamogordo.
Several ago when i went to Gordo to see Big Boy 844 from Cheyenne, I was staying at the same motel as the Union Pacific guys.

That setup is called "Hi-Rail". Vehicle drives on the railbed, lowers the wheels onto the track and off they go.

I've seen these in action regularly on a local railroad. The back tires contact the rails to provide traction. Must be a smooth ride.

Yes indeed!
There is a railroad in Roswell.
That’s 75 miles away.
And Roswell has a number of excellent newer motels..

I see those things all time. They're used by the crews that service the dad blasted iron horse rails around here.

As someone said: "It's not a big deal, rail maintenance people use them all the time." Looks to me like a overnight stay, before breakfast and on the road again.
Have a blessed day,
Leon

No: in the spray bottle by the cone. See the first pic, where it's on the bumper. Has a hose.

Pretty sure that's a fire extinguisher. If not, it's a container that can be or is pressurized to spray something during the inspection tours that these vehicles periodically make up and down the rails. They can get out of the way anytime they pass a crossing by lifting the wheels up that run on the rails and driving off on the truck tires. They coordinate with the rail schedules between trains.
If you travel along the BNSF rail line from Farwell, TX across to Belen, NM, you can often see these vehicles in use, especially around the Vaughn, NM area. There is a big maintenance depot there with lots of various kinds of equipment and supplies needed to maintain that stretch of track.

Actually, yes.
Was riding the Rio Grande Scenic Railroad upon Alamosa line with a company VP.
I mentioned to him a tale of CO good old boys who used a railroad to get into some difficult mountain terrain.
He exploded! Started quoting laws and spouting penalties.
It’s actually illegal to stand on Railroad Right of Way,
You is trespassing.
