You Gotta Be Kidding
As I posted earlier, I am going to have to buy a new laptop. I have decided on which one to buy, but now I find that I have to re-buy Microsoft Office. That doesn't really surprise me, and if I buy it as I buy my computer, I get a $20 discount. Then, I realize that what I would receive is actually only a one year subscription! What does that mean? Does that mean that after the year is up, if I try to create a new excel spreadsheet for my new Registered Magnum collection that I will not be able to do it?
I bought the latest version of Office with every other computer that I have bought. But, that was good for years!! It might not be the newest version, but I did not care. YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING!
Am I misinterpreting my situation? What options, if any, do I have? Thanks.
Rant Over.

OK, calm down, this is not as bad as you think. Now, Microsoft Office is what it always has been. However, they offer a service, since 2015, Office 365 Home, where you have: A subscription to Office 365 Home, which includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Outlook, Publisher and Access, for installation on up to five PCs/Macs and five phones -- is $100 per year.Sep 22, 2015

Load the free LibreOffice suite. Runs all your office documents. Been loading it on computers for years.

If you insist on sticking with MS and can live with only Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote, get the "Home & Student" for a one time purchase of $149.99.

Bought a copy of MS Office back in 2010 with a new computer. It came with the ability to load it into three devices. Now reached that number so no more ability to load onto a new device.
I got Office for Mac with my Mac Book Pro, but only a one time use
Version.
And that is why I don’t want to buy a new laptop.

You can try the free LibreOffice that I mentioned in the previous post. Above the "Download" button is popup menu of operating systems it installs to.
I run it on my MacBook. Older releases are available but the current download supports OSX 10.8 and newer.

Get a chromebook.
(Granted, my needs are relatively simple, but I've never missed Windows since buying one a few years ago and there are a tremendous number of workarounds for those needing specific apps or types of apps.)

I've been using OpenOffice for at least 10 years. It does all that I need for my home use.

I still run MS Office 2011 on my Mac. It apparently only works on one machine at a time. When I moved it to another Mac, I had to activate it again. It then disabled itself on the new Mac.
I don't think it is tied permantly to a single specific machine, but can only be active on 1 machine at a time. I don't know if the Windows version is different.

If download LibreOffice for free you will hardly notice the difference. Another great open source program.
You can't BUY anything nowadays, only SUBSCRIBE to it. You lose track of where your money goes and trying to get them to stop 'automatic renewal' can take months because they don't want you to unsubscribe from them taking money out of your account and putting it in theirs.
PS: Be sure to get it from libreoffice.org and not a third party that has added their own garbage to it.
PPS: I do all of my word processing on the built into Windows Wordpad.

You do not have to buy a new version of Office just because you bought a new computer.

I plan to keep using my Windows 7 laptop with MS Office 10 as long as it will work. I only need excel, word, and Outlook. I bought a copy years ago for up to 3 machines, and have loaded it on both my Granddaughters machines when I gave it to them when the grad from high school. Still going strong on all 3.

There are aspects that aren't compatible. However, those things are aspects of Office that most people don't even know exist and some instances of formatting.
I use the full version at work and can get it at home for a fraction of the retail cost.

if you have 'used' your prescribed number, you can call microsoft and still have it activated. I have re-used my copies more than the 3 or so times, because i have had to 'erase' and reload office on the same machine. Microsoft is just trying to keep people from using the same copy (serial number) scores of times.

Actually, they don't care how many times an individual uses it. What they do care about is giving it away to all your friends or trying to sell it yourself. That's why they put a limit on it.
Like you said, a phone call will usually get it activated again. Just takes a little effort on your part.

So, nobody here would likely notice.

Well, you've actually been riding the edge for about 3 years, and you might get another 3. . .

How would we know? We don't know everyone here or how they use it. Maybe they will, maybe they won't. It all depends on how much of a power user they are. I use things like Word and Excel every day. I take advantage of a lot of the powerful features in these programs. If they aren't compatible, it could cause issues.
The point is, Open Office is not completely compatible with MS files.

I believe you can still buy a new version of Office that won't expire in a year. I bought a new Mac in 2016, bought a download version (with a $20 discount with a new machine), and we're still running it. They also provide updates you can download at no charge.
