Cat put to sleep
Our 18 year old cat, Leo, was put to sleep today. He always had epilepsy and in the past two weeks even medicine did not prevent attacks any more.
He helped raise our two sons. He will be dearly missed.

Sorry to hear of your loss. Our dogs and cats are truly members of our families, and are sadly missed on their passing.
We had to have our senior cat, Sylvester, put to sleep recently, and I went with him to the vets and held him as he went to sleep. Cried like a baby. We had had him 15 years.
Here he is at 14:
Best Regards, Les

When people say "they're only pets" I can only shake my head and turn away. My wife and I miss our dog we had to put down 6 years ago more than some relatives who have passed.

I'm so sorry for your loss. It hurts when you have to put down a furry buddy that has shared your life. I've had to do so several times in the last 5 years or so, dogs and cats.

It sounds like you gave that kitty a long and happy life. It’s not easy when epilepsy is involved. You did a good job. Sorry to hear of Leo’s passing.

My wife and I are celebrating our 52nd wedding anniversary today. Over the course of these 52 years we've had 3 cats who lived to 15,17 and a few months shy of 20. After putting the last one to sleep we decided not to get another although it would probably outlive us. There were some of the saddest days of our lives and you have our condolences!
Jim

I am so sorry for your loss. Leo was sure a cute cat! I like his yellow eyes and long fur. I agree with Les, that they are family members and it is the hardest thing to have to do. It is done out of love and compassion though. Condolences to you and your family. He will always be in your heart and memories.

Bless you for helping him. I've had to do this so many time myself. Dogs, cats, horses, favorite dairy goats. It's never easy. I miss every one of them.

I am very sorry to hear about that. I had to do the same thing about 10 years ago for a beloved dog of mine for the same reason. Huge loss, that is for sure, and one that people who do not have the ability to love an animal will never know.

What a gorgeous photograph of Leo. How handsome and fierce he looks.

You can tell that kitty has some CHARACTER!!!! The single most rewarding thing my son and I have ever done is becaome involved in feral cat rescue. We have four at home—all rescues and all absolute hoots and members of the family.
Brother SASU when your heart has healed a bit I hope you will be able to reach out to another kitty and enrich his or her life like you obviously did for Leo.

My thoughts are with you in your loss of a wonderful friend, we have all lost or had to put a friend down. Mine were cats and bird dogs, I am 78 years old and I have never forgotten our friends we have had over the last 59 years. It will get better but the lump and the tears are not far from showing. Jeff

Putting down a pet.....
Putting down a pet is an act of unselfish love. It's hard for you but best for them.

Such a sad day when a loved one is put down. I've held three for their last breaths and it destroys me every time.
Thankfully the good memories move the tragedy out of the way as time passes.

They come and go and all are different. They are soothing and comforting and will become as much of your life as you will allow. In time I hope you give another the chance to become the next Leo.

Our precious furry loved ones rely on us for absolutely everything, including knowing when it’s “that time”. And when it is, we have an absolute obligation to do the right thing. Rest well knowing you did exactly what needed to be done. MrsB and I send our heartfelt condolences for your loss. Rest in peace, Leo.

My daughter had her cat Taffy, put to sleep last Sunday, 6/10/18. The old girl had cancer , wouldn't eat, and my daughter didn't want her to suffer anymore.

We put my girlfriends pooch down Friday. It made for a miserable weekend. I feel your pain.

Been there, done that too many times. I feel your pain and am sorry for your loss.
Our last was our mighty Webster, last October. He had a habit of giving my wife a little 'kiss' - a touch with his tongue on her nose, whenever he'd get close to her face. He went downhill very fast with kidney failure, and when he could no longer get up, we took him to the vet. My wife held him, and as the vet put the needle in, Webster summoned his last bit of strength, rose up to give her a 'kiss', then collapsed and died.
Unconditional love. That's what we get from a good pet, cat or dog.
Lordy, I miss him.
Here's mighty Webster, all 17 lbs of muscle, and a little thing I read at times like this to make me feel better. I hope it helps you too.

I am so sorry to hear about Leo. Thank you for the wonderful life you gave him. Most people wouldn't have it in them to take the time and give the love to an animal with epilepsy. I know he appreciated and loved you for the life you gave him.
It is a hard decision to make when it is time to let go. As hard as it is, just know deep down inside you did what was best for him. I know he knows.
Wishing peace for your family.

18 years, with epilepsy - you did a hell of a good job for Leo, including the final duty. My condolences.

Sorry to hear about your loss. I'm sure Leo knew you were with him at his last moments. Those who never had pets will never experience the joy these furry critters can bring into someones life. Be thankful for all the good times you spent with Leo.

Thank you so much for the supportive words and thoughts. They help ease the pain.
Leo had a full life and we provided him everything we could.
We had a veterinarian come to us to put him to sleep. Leo spent the last hours of his life surrounded by the whole family. He did a full patrol of our lot around the house, enjoyed the summer sun, smelled the wind, ate grass, chased a cone, ate his favourite foods. He fell asleep in his own house with the family around him. It is rare even for a person to get such a peaceful and painless farewell. Still it is painful for us.
The photo in the first post is of Leo during his last outing.
