STRIPES!
Watching one of my favorite Bill Murray movies on BBC America right now. Stripes is right up there with Meatballs, Caddyshack, Ghostbusters - all from Bill's golden age of the early 1980's.
Anybody else a fan of his work back in the day?

IT'S GROUNDHOG DAY!
I saw Bill Murray at the Groundhog Day celebration in Punxsutawney, PA in 1992. He stayed hid until the ceremony was just about over, then he came out. There was a video made of his appearance and one of the Inner Circle put a top hat on him and Bill Murray actually got to hold Punxsutawney Phil for a while.
The movie was in production at that time, and the story is that Bill Murray went back to Illinois and did a re-write on the movie script based on what he saw from being at the Groundhog Day ceremony. I know for sure that Phil's proclamation read in the movie is identical to the proclamation the Groundhog Club read at the actual ceremony in 1992.
My dad and stepmother also were interviewed on that video. It was their first big date before they got married. The video also included the Groundhog Club dinner from the night before where I received my appointment as an Ambassador of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club.

I was best man at a wedding where Caddyshack was filmed. Rolling Hills. Another friend worked in the lawn equipment repair shop. Good times.
Stripes, Tank Hill Ft. Jackson S.C. More good times.

P.J. Soles and Sean Young aren't half bad either.
I especially liked Young in Blade Runner. She was pretty good in Dune too.

Yeah, Candy was a great comedic talent gone too soon - just like Belushi, Radner, Kaufman, Williams...

Bill Murray is a pretty versatile actor. He was the lead in a remake of "The Razors edge". I was surprised to see him in that particular roll. He did a much better job than Tyrone Power in an earlier version of the same story.

Caddyshack is in my top 5. Ted Knight and Rodney Dangerfield make that movie though I love the scene were Bill is clipping the flowers, He has a 198 yards, it's in the hole.

Saw it the other night . I still laugh at those movies and can watch them over and over . Too bad they don't make them like that anymore , or have actors like we used to .

The really ironic thing about Caddyshack is it was never expected to be a commercial success. Other than a few actors who, at the time, had a little name recognition it was a real low-budget production.
IIRC I believe the studio execs thought that at best it would do a little more than break even, and at worst it would be a tax write off.
Instead it became an almost cult-classic. Another prime example of how out of touch Hollyweird can be with what the public really likes and will pay to see.

Yes, Bill is in it.
No spoiler alert, but hardcore Bill fans might not like it!

Bill Murray has very recently and publicly supported the gun control efforts of the Parkland students . . .

Very unfortunate. But it doesn't change the quality of his comedy 30 years ago, and boycotting 30 year old movies on TV over a recent position would of course be pointless.
Thanks for making the point though. Guess I won't be watching much of his new stuff - assuming there is any. FWIW the quality of his comedy started going downhill 20+ years ago anyway (after Groundhog Day).
No big loss not to see his newer stuff IMO.

Agreed. Apparently Zombieland 2, with the original cast, is finally in the works . . .

When a person is getting too serious about something I say:
“Lighten up Francis”. Then I usually have to explain the reference..

That's pure nonsense.
If anything, so many movies today portray
over-the-top masculinity.
What is different, is more women are
portrayed as able to knock bad guys
and good guys for very nasty loops.

My departed mother always thought I was too intense and should not be watching action movies. She gave me a little known Bill Murray movie for Christmas one year. The Man Who Knew Too Little, it's a hoot!

A good movie. It didn't make me wanna go enlist, but many good lines. (BLOWN UP SIR), Warren Oates played a great part.

Stripes is a great movie but other than that I didn't care much for him.
The movie does have some great lines.
When someone at work is being to dramatic I tell them to "settle down francis"
or, if someone mentions a high profile name "that guy owes me money"
Touch my desk "if any of you ***** touch my stuff...…...I ki ya"

"My steak still had marks on it where the Jockey was hitting it!"
"Hey doll, wanna' earn twenty bucks - the hard way?"
"You musta' really been somethin' before electricity!"
"Last time I saw a mouth like that there was a hook in it!"
"Now I know why tigers eat their young!"
"That must be the worlds ugliest hat... but it looks good on you though!"
"Yeah? Well I'm no doorknob either!"
The whole movie was good, but Dangerfield stole the show. One of my all-time favorites, for sure.

One of my favorite all time movies. I have a friend who was stationed on the base where Stripes was shot and he got to hang with Bill Murray some-said he was a great and funny guy who spent time with the guys on base.

Stripes was filmed in Louisville KY when I lived there. I remember them closing down streets and a bridge to film. (For those familiar, they closed the 2nd street bridge). I also recognize FT Knox throughout most of the movie.
Still, I've never been a huge Stripes fan.

I have seen the back of Bill's head at a Xavier University basketball game where his son is an assistant coach.
Top that.
