Ever notice how gun people tend to eat their own?
I see on many sites many gun people tend to attack their own side when they don't agree on a subject. Marijuana, politics, even what guns are good. I have seen so many arguments over a Taurus 92 is as good as a Beretta 92 just cheaper or its the biggest POJ ever made and you are an idiot if you don't agree. I have seen many older shooters who have dumped their NRA membership because AR15s are not something anyone needs, but just think of taking my wingmaster and you are in for a fight.

Trying to get gun owners to all think alike is no different than trying to get owners of red cars to be on the same team :-)

I have, long ago, given up trying to convince others of ANYTHING! I’m not good at it and I don’t enjoy it. I do enjoy reading this forum, mainly because most of those here are somewhat free of that “if you don’t agree with me...” brutality. I don’t mind sharing my experiences and don’t mind reading others who are doing the same. When the soapboxes come out, I’m ready to read something else.

Sometimes fishing forums can get contentious, but hunting forums are even worse. Maybe it’s a gun thing.

Unlike the "Other Side", we have no Party Line, no Party Control Commission, no Thought Police to ensure correct thinking and punish those who deviate. And many of Us believe as fervently in the 1st Amendment as we do in the 2nd.

Some posters in the comment area of Car and Driver and Motortrend (since removed) crack me up. A new car is announced and there is usually at least one millenial (I assume) who will be foaming at the mouth because there is a visible gap between the top of the tire and wheelarch. Apoplexy follows when they discover you cannot order it with 20" wheels. ROFLMAO!

My theory on internet debates is that we are usually not trying to convince the "other guy" that our opinion is correct. We are mostly trying to reassure ourselves that we are right. I frequently get into fights on Youtube over .357 snubs versus 9mm semi autos. One day, while typing an essay on the merits of revolvers, I suddenly realized that I wasn't trying to win anyone over at all...I was just trying to reassure myself that I had made the right choice when I sold off my Glocks and replaced them with wheelguns.

Umm ... i wish that were the case, but if you go to the lounge of some gun forums where political discussions are welcome, you’ll find out otherwise. Someone throws out a bait phrase, and everybody else just adds their own variant of frequently uninformed mean-spiritedness. If you dare to dissent, especially on 2nd Amendment topics, you get ripped to pieces. No actual discussion.
Group-think is a big problem in this country, and we are not immune.
I’ve taken to using the term “assault rifle” whenever I can, just because I know it ticks off the self-appointed guardians of pro-gun political correctness
That’s why I appreciate this forum so much. The rules and the attentiveness of the moderators spare us most of that nasty business.

Guess I'm old & set in my ways. Still hunt with a 30-30 Win. Carbine & a 16 Ga. double. They have put meat on the table for over 70 years. So has my old Colt SA 44 Special.

Any more, I wouldn't be surprised if little old ladies over in some "Knitting and Sewing" forums are at each others throats.

I think the civility of this forum comes from the fact that most of the folks here are more mature and have life experiance that only comes with well living life.It seems people here can disagree in a gentlemanly fashion most of the time .I truly admire the way SWCA members especially can disagree on something but it doesn't turn into a "Your an idiot" type of thing they generaly end up saying well with S&Ws anything is possible and move on .

Like any forum we have a few folks that just enjoy a good argument and will argue with most any subject. A few who think their opinion on anything is the only one worth listening to. And a few who are really over the edge, I've noticed those don't get to stay and play with us very long, the mods here give lots of rope but there is a limit. I like it here and apparently a lot of others do too. Diversity makes it interesting.

It's complicated. Understanding why men do what they do, is a lifelong study.
Example; My Dad was a military man and believed in 1935 haircuts. You know, whitesidewalls. He even shaved twice-a-day.
He gave me the devil when I was a teen for my shaggy hair. He had to sign for my first driver's license and made me stop off at the barber for a crew-cut before we went to the motor vehicle place. No haircut, no driver's license! I still have the picture somewhere.
Long story short, I got sent home from school because of my shaggy hair. The principle was a Normandy veteran.
My Dad immediately grabbed me up and we went to the principal's office. He blessed out the principle "Who was he to tell his son how to wear his hair!"
I'm still trying to figure that one out!

When I played face to face a large percentage of players where obnoxious. Part of that percentage are psychopaths and part of that percentage are serial killers that, 'never fit in'.

I don't know, but sometimes seems gun owners are, unfortunately, pretty quick to throw other gun owners under the bus. Not just on relatively trivial disagreements about what this or that is best, or worst. That's all just good clean fun, IMHO, that many, myself included, obviously enjoy bloviating about. But I see that same attitude toward some pretty serious issues, like legislation and regulation. This, by folks who may view their own firearms interest as somewhat more socially acceptable than others. Those "others" likely being folks who are interested in evil black rifles, high capacity or semi-auto anything, or guns considered too powerful, or too small by media, politicians, etc. Firearms owners who don't seem particularly concerned, and may actually be supportive, when there is a push for any restrictive firearms legislation that does not affect their area of interest, and the firearms related to that interest. After all, new anti 2A legislative proposals and regulations are predominately aimed at those guns, as a neighbor once told me, that "we don't need". My neighbor, who professed to being a gun owner, was referring to ARs and similar. That type of eating our own, is the most dangerous to 2A rights, no matter our endless disagreements as to what is the best or worst firearm/ammunition/accessory/training, etc.......ymmv

Well say that gun people aren't argumentative, and if you disagree, let's take it outside!
Knife fanciers can be pretty damn contentious too. Carbon steel versus stainless, drop point or clip point, lockback-linelock-frame lock, and on and on.
I stick around here and dropped my other forums because civility is the rule rather than the exception. Some of that is damn good management, but I think Caj is right. Most of us are mature if not actually overripe, and have learned to behave ourselves when discussing differences.

I stick around here and dropped my other forums because civility is the rule rather than the exception. Some of that is damn good management, but I think Caj is right. Most of us are mature if not actually overripe, and have learned to behave ourselves when discussing differences.

Indeed. The problem as I see it is not contentiousness. It’s actually more the opposite: The inability to have a good argument with someone of a different viewpoint without feeling insecure and attacked. I think that’s where a lot of the nastiness comes from, but also the general lack of real discussion.
Take the fellow above who apparently feels “thrown under the bus” if someone does not share his particular position on gun restrictions. As was pointed out, there is no party line, and a different view on certain aspects of gun laws should be a cue to have a healthy debate, not to imply disloyalty to the cause. If somebody doesn’t like my views about an issue related to gun rights, they can either try to convince me otherwise, or watch out for the bus

On a reloading note
Down here in Georgia, white tail deer season is something like September 15 through January 30 of next year. For the last few years, my bullets have killed 20 to 30 deer each year. I personally am still working on Deer #1. Maybe I should go deer hunting more often, because of my age the hunting license is free.
The people I know spend days in deer stands, days scouting their hunting grounds, plant feed plots, and are really good shots. I am unwilling to be that bored, that long to shoot a deer.
Yesterday I watched 2 fawns with spots and stripes, grazing at the tree line where the grass had been cut along side the highway. There was a pickup truck with vegetable stand parked just off the road. The guy said he had been watching the fawns for a week. Mom must have been just inside the tree line. Kind of took the edge off deer hunting.

I don't think it's unique to guns. I've heard strong arguments between Ford and Chevy lovers.

I don't know about the Knitting & Sewing ones, but jewelry ones can get wicked.

I got into the same discussion a few years ago with members of a local gun club. The club is by far trap and skeet oriented. Many bays and launchers for that type of shooting. One 25 yd range (and from what I was told they only built it for pattern testing.
The group that was talking in their clubhouse only cared about shotguns. No care for any type of handgun, and very little for rifles of any type. I was astounded.

It's not that we don't like each other, it's that we fall into that category of people who are highly passionate about our beliefs.
I've gotten into many of spirited "conversations" over the lunch table at our outdoor shooting range. But the differences stay at the lunch table. Out there in the range & elsewhere, we're buddies again...
