Question Questions for Forum members living in the Los Angeles area.

My wife and I will be in Los Angeles the last week of July. We will be staying at a hotel on Sunset Boulevard. After our business is concluded we would like to spend a couple of days exploring the city and taking in the sights. I have never been to Los Angeles and have some questions.

What areas of LA should I avoid?
What are some good public beaches?
What are some good restaurants, seafood in particular, which aren’t outrageously expensive?
Is public transportation adequate or is it better to rent a car to move about the city?

I was in the Redondo area for training a long time ago. Nothing struck me as being particularly nice. I was a bit surprised by the beach. It wasn't sand like in Florida, but more of a very fine gravel. The pier was interesting - it extended a very long way out into the ocean.

I'd simply do an internet search for "Tripadvisor Los Angeles Sunset Blvd"; then, page down for the Top 10 things to do list. Browse the hundreds of options with your wife and have a great time.

Is it safe to travel there with a gun? Are visitors allowed a certain time there before they'd have to register it? Concealed carry is a no - no, I'm sure.Does CA recognize any out of state carry permits at all?

I lived in SoCal for 65 years; moved out of CA in 2017. I offer the following:

* If in the Sunset area, don't travel east. Stay out of Hollywood.
* Correct. No CCW for out-of-state.
* If you bring a firearm, must be in a locked hard-shell container, unloaded.
* If a semi-auto, no mags over 10 rds.
* You need a car. Public transportation will make you wish for CCW.
* Avoid Santa Monica beach. Trashy, little English spoken.
* I was a poor school teacher. Don't know any good restaurants.

I could go on but you get the idea. Be careful.

P.S. There is always Disneyland in Anaheim.

I'm not a bit impressed with LA and I doubt you will be, either. Head over to the Palm Springs area for a nice relaxing day. PS has some great restaurants, and Desert Hot Springs has some great places to take a soak and unwind. It's just a couple hours east. You could even go from there up to Joshua Tree National Park.

Just my 2 cents worth!

The Huntington Library in San Marino is nice, the famous paintings Pinky and Blueboy are there. Checkout the Getty Museum, also the La Brea Tarpits is right across from the Petersen Car Museum, really a must see if you are a car guy or gear head.

Left SoCal in 2003, not going back. You will absolutely need a car. Car rentals at the airport will be almost double the cost compared to off-airport locations. Stay out of Hollywood and North Hollywood. The nicer beaches are in Orange County; Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, Balboa Island, and Laguna Beach, somewhere in that area. Expect very heavy traffic, especially on weekends. Parking is a challenge and can be expensive.

If Disneyland is out of your price range, try Knott's Berry Farm about 5 miles away. Less pricey and good food that won't empty your wallet.

If you want to go North a trip to Santa Barbara is a possibility...about a 1 1/2-2 hour ride, but again, avoid the weekends.

Above all, leave the guns at home and don't even think about carrying one.....kind of like being in a foreign country.

Have fun.....

My references are dated (1992 time frame), but if you enjoy people watching, the Venice Beach oceanfront promenade on a Saturday afternoon was unique and fun.

I lived in Manhattan Beach, and it was as good as any for ocean access, but be warned if swimming, the Pacific Ocean in the region is colder than you'd guess it is. We used to ride bicycles along the length of the Ocean Front Walk, from Manhattan Beach, north to Will Rogers Beach, then back south to Torrance Beach. It's a nice ride if you like to bike, but check the pollution numbers first (page 2 of the newspaper). Exertion on smog days can make you feel like your having a heart attack hours later.

A day at Catalina Island might be fun.

The USS Iowa and Queen Mary are in Long Beach. If your down that way, the view from the heights of the Korean Friendship Bell near the old fortress in Angels Gate Park is a peaceful respite from the city.

Homeless people have taken over the streets of Santa Monica.

Bon voyage.

Grew up there, left in 1992. Agree 100%. Pre-1980 it was a nice place to live and visit. Now, not so much.

That alone is enough to keep me from ever going there in my lifetime.

Worked there for many years. Never again.
What a waste it has turned into.
Never visit it again.
However, the High Sierras from Bishop and to the North, is beautiful and Conservative in politics.
But that may change as the "Los Angeles" population slowly creeps North!

Just stay home and watch re-runs of, Baywatch and, Pacific Blue on YouTube.

It's safer and less crowded. And you can watch with your guns present.

I feel much the same about Hawaii. Just watch, Baywatch Hawaii. I'm not a fan of, Hawaii 5-0, especially now that Grace Park has left.

Sad to hear that about Santa Monica...

I have a family friend who did well for himself and said it was paradise...this was a number of years ago however.

On a side note, I am surprised that they would have many issues with crime given the cost of homes in the area. Typical ranch-style home in the midwest would bring $400K give or take, now-a-days.

One of my sisters lives in Burbank, you couldn't buy a house there for $400K. Her 2 bedroom ranch would sell for $800,000+ and the taxes are about the same as my $160k home in Okoboji.
Can you say Proposition 13 (1978) They bought the house in the mid 50's for $18K

I'm not from Ca., but made several trips there a number of years ago. One of the best (IMO) seafood restaurants I have ever eaten at is called Gladstones. It is located at the junction of Sunset Blvd. and PCH 1. Not cheap, but not outrageous either. Just Google "Gladstones Restaurant". They have been there for over 50 years.

Never lived in LA, however my wife grew up there. I've spent quite a bit of time there on business and pleasure. All of my in-laws have moved out, the last one was her older brother that had lived there since the 1950s. He left last year. The house my wife grew up in was in a very very nice neighborhood when she was a girl in the 1960s. By the 1980's, it was beginning to go south - correction - the south was coming north. Today there are junk cars, goats, and toilets in the yards that were once well manicured.

LA was tolerably bad 20 years ago, today, it is intolerable. The dead of winter is the best time to visit, because many of the scumbags don't come outdoors if the temp is below 70.

Guns are illegal, however nearly all of the millions of criminals carry them with impunity. Those without guns carry switchblades dipped in AIDS and Hepatitis.

Good luck

Grew up there. Food is best for eclectic faire. Try Pinks Hot Dogs, Cielo Lindo at the north end of Olvera Street for taquitoes, Tommy's Burgers, Phillippe's for French Dip (these are police favorites, so they are all pretty safe). Mar Mac's for prime rib!

Getty, Huntington, Gene Autry, La Brea Museums are all outstanding. So is Natural History and Science and Industry Museums but not in good areas (USC Rose Garden is nice but right next to the Coliseum which is next to Natural History & Science and Industry). Stay away from Six Flags! Besides Disneyland (hock the kids for the price of admission!), there Knott's Berry Farm.

All the GOOD sports fishing is out of San Diego now. San Diego Zoo (and the Wild Animal Park) are the best around, although L.A. Zoo is pretty good. Steven Burch Aquarium (by Scripps Institute) is second only to Monterey Bay Aquarium.

Laguna Beach for art studios; Farmer Market for "neat shops". All of the above are zoos on the weekends!

I had to visit LA for business when I was working and couldn't wait to get on the plane out of there. There are places in the LA area which resemble third-world countries. I'll sure be glad when the big earthquake slides Calif. into the ocean.

My Wife is from there and I went there 22 years ago, wasn't bad at all. I actually enjoyed it.
Last time we were there was about two years ago and I have vowed to never willingly return.
Just my humble opinion.
