I can see a carry barbe-que gathering one where folks will let others handle their guns. I wouldn't be entirely comfortable even with seasoned hands handling my loaded guns. Thoughts?

I agree with you. If letting others handle your gun is on the program, I’d keep it unloaded for sure. And, check it each time to be sure it is empty, when passing it to someone else. And, insist the person you are passing to does likewise. Set up those rules in advance

I have had some BBQ guns. Still do. But, never been to a BBQ with ‘em.

My gun is always loaded and I don't allow other people to handle it.

I think a group show and tell is a negligent discharge waiting to happen. If I was at a BBQ (or similar function) and the guns started coming out I'd leave

Seasoning is great for barbeque. But keep it off your guns. Make everyone wash first.

I've hosted a B-B-Q for several years, for close personal friends and their families. (By invitation only)

Those that want to join in the afternoon shooting activities out behind the corrals were welcome to do so.

All firearms are kept un-loaded till on the firing line, be it sporting clays, pistol or carbine.

Everyone has a good time.....
On the pistol shootin, a saw buck er two has changed hands in the past.
I hope to have another lit'l get together this fall after round-up time.

I like to have an occasion to shoot my BBQ guns.

Sometimes, if I'm feeling really ostentatious, I'll sport a brace.

I will agree, it's not for everyone....Common curiosity and safety just go together.

People with guns scare me.

Really.

I've worked police firing ranges for 30 years. I could write a book on the stupid stuff I've seen over the years. And these are professionals.

The rookies are bad enough, but they listen. The seasoned guys think they know it all.

Every unintended discharge that I know of was from a seasoned officer. I guess familiarity breeds comfort and proper respect for the weapon goes out the window.

This is one example and one of the saddest events and a tragic loss...……...

If I were to have one of these since drinking is a part of barbecue's I'd do the following: All worn guns would have to be unloaded and cable tied and I'd personally check every one as the attendees arrived. This is the procedure responsible gun show promoters have used for years.

Surprisingly, such events don't happen around here. Regardless, I think wearing a loaded bbq gun, with appropriate bbq carry rig, is more than acceptable. Passing the pistol around, loaded or unloaded, not so much . . .

While much of the meat has been rare, NONE of the meat at BBQ's I've been to ever had to be shot.

I enjoy a good gun show & tell as much as the next guy, but If there has been drinking??? NOT A FAN of passing guns around. (even unloaded) I worry about dropping,dry firing, greasy/grubby fingers.

Old habits die hard. So, if my firearm is loaded and some capable person really wishes to see it, I immediately unload it, and hand them the firearm. That's just something that has been ingrained in me since I was a kid.

There is absolutely no reason that I can think of to hand them a loaded gun.

At barbecues, the firearm is unloaded and in the holster until there are some shooting activities.

As to alcohol consumption at those activities? Definitely not! As someone previously mentioned, alcohol and firearms don't mix.

Of course, I stay away from the alcohol anyway because with me, after two 7ups I start rippin' my clothes off and begin dancin' on the tables.

If you bring an unloaded gun to the event for the specific purpose of showing it off, yes please.

But I'll never draw my carry gun for anyone to handle it, unless it's at the range to shoot and I know that person.

To me, that would be called a "paperweight".

Seems pretty silly and even frankly conceited to walk around with an unloaded gun just to show others how pretty it is or wealthy you are. You can do that with your clothing or jewelry, fine by me, but if you're worried about having the gun loaded maybe you should find some other way to show off.

An unloaded gun is a useless gun whether at a BBQ or not. If you're worried about your friends having a negligent discharge, unload it before handing it to them. Just that simple. Also be sure your friends know what they are doing and how to handle the firearms (the 4 rules of gun safety come to mind).

The difference between a private BBQ get together with guns and a public gunshow…

If one goes to a public gunshow, they are required to have said firearms unloaded.
And most folks carry and or set-up to show their least desirable pieces,
keeping the most cherished items at home.

At a BBQ with close personal friends, you get to share your most prized with like minded folks.
(ya don't have to have a loaded gun....We know our friends)

Ya know it's kinda like we do here, with pictures.

These kind of doings is not for everyone.....That's why not everyone gets an invitation.

Are ya friends living in the same house or on the same street? What if ya have to travel to them or they have to travel to ya? Maybe ya don't know if you'll encounter trouble along the way?

Okay...it looks like we're going to have to differentiate a little bit here.

Barbecues in Dave's (keith44spl) part of the country and in many rural western areas usually take place out on someone's ranch.

Where I'm from, that usually includes pit-barbecued beef or pork (we've done elk occasionally), baked beans, tossed salad, homemade bread, and either some kind of sheet cake or pie for dessert...sometimes homemade ice cream. Nothing fancy, just good, stick-to-your-ribs type of food. Everybody invited usually brings something to contribute to the meal.

Now remember, we're talking out in a rural area where barbecue is a pretty serious thing. To give an example, at my old place I had a 5'x4'x5' concrete pit with 12-inch thick walls out in back of the mule corrals strictly for the purpose of pit barbecuing. We aren't grilling Oscar Meyer wieners on a Weber in somebody's 10'x20' backyard here.

The whole process starts around 4:30 in the morning when the big fire in the pit is started. When it finally burns down to coals a few hours later, about 300 pounds of chuck roasts are placed on the coals, the lid put on, covered up with dirt, and left for about 10 or 12 hours. Even building the fire is a social activity with a few of the ol' boys getting together, firing up the pit, then sitting around solving the world's problems while the fire burns down to coals where you can finally put in the meat. Like I said...serious.

Standard dress for men normally consists of Wranglers, a nice button-down collar dress shirt, a quality beaver-felt hat, and a nice handmade pair of boots, unlike a city-type barbecue in the backyard where most people are wearing flip-flops, Hawaiian shirts, and Bermuda shorts.

Because you're located quite a ways from anywhere, it's perfectly acceptable, and often expected, to have some kind of shooting contest.

Now granted, this is definitely not the norm in major metropolitan areas and would most likely get the police called in a matter of minutes.

At these rural type barbecues, if the police or sheriff are there, it's because they were invited with their families and they're actively participating in the shooting activities, too.

If you've never been to one of these barbecues, you're missing out on one of the finer things of life, in my opinion.

The only objection I have to THE OP's scenario is the concept of breaking out the guns for show and tell. It doesn't even have to be stupidity all it takes is one well intentioned mistake and someone is passing around a loaded gun.

A shooting contest is a different thing. That's a range and all range rules (hopefully) apply

I do not leave my home unarmed period. I've been to BBQs and church picnics and company picnics and as I said above I was armed. I try not to make an issue where none exists. If I need to tell you I'm armed you don't know me well enough for me to tell you I'm armed.

The last time I went to the range one of the guys I was with had a Glock 26. I was considering buying 1 so I asked if I could try his. We went to the fiddle table, cleared our weapons and switched out. He got my Glock 19 and I shot the rest of the class with his gun while he shot mine. That's about the only way I'd do that.

This didn't happen at a BBQ, but...

My police partner and I were patrolling the downtown area in our cruiser. We encountered one of our new officers driving a three wheel Cushman in an alley. We got out of our vehicles and talked a bit. I asked the new guy what he was carrying. He pulled his blue M19 out of his holster and handed it to me, loaded. I looked at it and then passed it to my partner, with the cylinder open, still loaded. My partner looked at it, closed the cylinder and then fired six shots into the air. He then handed the empty gun back to the shocked new guy and we drove off.

We did some dumb stuff back then.

To the OP, all safety rules apply, all the time everywhere.

Life & socials are sure different way out on the rural route.

I guess, I forget not everyone resides in a firearm friendly communities.

When I'm at the place in Kentucky, all the neighbors enjoy shooting, we
don't shoot at one another or act like bunch of fools.

Down at the home place in Texas, same thing, folks like to shoot.
Local gun fire is....is the sound of freedom !

Boys, it ain't the wild west, no one's shooting out the lights or duelin' in the road, Gees.

The area of the country were gun totin BBQs take place, folks are dinning
on brisket and or pork cuts smoked for hours and hours, with all the fixins,
not beanee weenees and frozen hamburger patties cook'd on a gas grill
on someone's concrete patio in the city limits.

Most attendees are at least half a century old, several have saw the elephant for real,
can handle a gun, can ride and shoot straight.

Men and women I could trust with the lives of my grand children, they can fondle my engraved pistols anytime.
We don't drink alcohol, or handle loaded guns. Safety First.
It's a gunshow with good food and better friends.

There might be one or two on this thread that could rank an invite...

But, there's a heck of a lot more that I wouldn't want to be caught in the same territory with.

As close as we get around here are Larry's twice a year....North East Ohio Bunchings...........start at 9am ...... good lunch..... ( Larry maybe we should start grilling/BBQing some beef or pork)..... lots of S&Ws ...... no beer...... finish up around 3pm..... lot of BBQ qualified guns on display!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Some talk of getting together the night before at a local eatery for dinner and adult beverages....... as Larry has attracted a lot of Out of Towner's...... aka Steeler Fans.......

A full blown BBQ would be cool ....... but IMHO someone would show up "loaded" and a "shoot off" would be inevitable .....

Both Chip and Dave explained what a rural barbeque is much better than I ever could. Think of it this way the rural barbeque is the equivalent of the urban Sunday brunch. It’s about spending quality time with Trusted Friends and families. Life doesn’t get much better than that

Dang, Dave! I don't know if I would ever get the privilege of being invited to one of your barbecues, but if so, you definitely wouldn't want me to be handlin' that firearm. I'm afraid I'd be droolin' all over those beautiful ivories.

Then again, I'm sure Ms. Judy wouldn't let me fondle those ivories anyway. She'd give me the ol' "stink eye," shake her head with that warning look and drag me away somewhere behind the potato salad to keep me from ooglin' over that lovely little lady engraved in ivory.

Of course, I do have a couple of nice barbecue guns...complete with rigs that you made me.

She is beautiful.But my wife has a rule about touching.Looking is ok but touching could result in amputation.However to brag a little while my guns may not be as pretty I do have two BBQ rigs from Dave.I wear them to family BBQ’s and around some to show off beautiful leather.

He loves to tell the story on me of pulling those stocks off'n John's revolver right there on their gunshow table.
