Degenerative Peripheral Motor Nerve Scare, My Thumb Stopped Working
Most here know of my degenerative peripheral motor nerve condition and that I'm doing what I can to deal with it.
Anyway, a few days ago I woke up and my right thumb had stopped working altogether. Before that, I could move it a bit, at least enough to cut a cigar and twirl it while toasting the foot.
My whole right hand and wrist have very limited movement and as my neurologist put it, "profound weakness." If I brace my wrist, it helps to make my hand a bit more useful. I've learned to do a lot of stuff left handed. My right lower leg, ankle and foot are affected with a bit of involvement in my left side.
After a coupla days my thumb started to wake up again and now it's pretty much back to normal, well the new normal anyway.
I gotta admit, I was a bit concerned that my condition was going to worsen and wondered what could be involved next.
I've lost the feeling in my right foot for a few months before and my wife would check it to make so there's no injury. It's fine now.

Snubby, that must be terrifying. Scared me and it’s not my thumb!
Glad it resolved for you.

Glad that it is better. Maybe you had a temporary case of cigar thumb.

Glad to hear that you've made a recovery. I know how scary a sudden impairment can be. One morning while I was sleeping my mouth dried out and one side of my mouth wouldn't move and I thought I was having a stroke. I fought to wake up and found out I had a dry mouth and was not having a stroke. But it certainly was frightening because my grandfather had multiple strokes during his life.

Good luck with your long term health. I have had a lot of temporary malfunctions too. Like my grandfather said at 93, getting older is not for sissies. You just keep moving along. Best of luck!

Les, Isn't that a oxymoron, Snubby getting back to normal?
Oh, you mean physically normal....
That's what we want to hear about Snubby, he's getting back physically normal. . . . . . . . . .
Best wishes Snubby from me, on your getting back to to "Normal" from your scare.

Every now and then my condition throws me a curve. I either havta learn to live with it or, like my thumb, it eventually gets back to "normal."

That's the thing. I'm only 55 and otherwise very healthy. That's what's made it possible for me to work on getting back and staying on my feet after my neurologist mentioned "wheelchair."

The other day I was thinkin'. What if my right hand did get worse and stay that way?
I've already learned to do lotsa stuff left handed, including shootin'.
My wife already helps with cutting and stitching leather.
'Bout the only thing I still need 2 hands for is cutting and toasting the foot of a cigar. My favorite cutter's gimpy hand compatible and I hold the lighter in my left hand.
While we were out hiking the other day, I asked my wife if she'd cut my cigars if I wasn't able to do it myself one day. She looked at me as if I was crazy for asking such a thing, "of course I would," she replied.
How cool it that? I got me a good one.

When I do a project I really get into it and sometimes ignore when I accidentally slam into an object, bang a body part etc. A day or two days later I'll be in pain and not really know why - until really thinking about it. Then I recall what I did when involved with my project. Duh!
Since you are very active you might have injured yourself while camping, hiking, bicycling, or similar and not payed much attention to it at the time. It happens..... Obviously it could also be related you your nerve condition but as long as it's getting better - that's a good sign! As you say....... Keep on Chooglin'!

Hmm, I did recently change up my workouts at the Y. Even though I wear double wrist wraps, the weights are still pushing on my hands in a different manner. Could've fatigued my poor old gimpy thumb.

Well, it's back to where it was before it stopped working.
I know that's the most I can hope for.
It'll always be gimpy like my right hand and wrist. My hope's that it doesn't get any worse.
