Just spent a delightful afternoon watching the Altoona ‘Fish’ play the Bowie Baysox. Weekday noon game. Does it get better than that?

Official team name is the ‘Curve;’ many refer to them as the Fish...obviously.

Some of the corniest promos between every inning. All got big laughs, regardless. Kate Smith sang ‘God Bless America’ at the 7th inning stretch. A WWII Army veteran was honored in person. Bless him and all who served...and the entire Greatest Generation.

2:25 minutes between innings; 15 seconds between pitches...20 seconds if man on base. 30 seconds between batters. All timed on the scoreboard. Lotsa action and a tidy game in just a bit over two hours.

$14 for a 4th row seat on the aisle behind home plate; field level. $4 for a PBR 24 oz. can. $5 bucks for two tasty hot dogs.

I watched the All-Star pre-game last night. 30 MOH recipients were honored followed by a stellar choral rendition of the National Anthem. I had a lump in my throat.

The game was hard fought and close going to ten innings.

Baseball and its fans both won.

A Country Boy Can Survive

Last month I went with a group to watch the minor league team down the road in Frederick, MD, the Frederick Keys. It turned out they were playing the Lynchburg Hillcats, a minor league team for the Cleveland Indians, my favorite team. The Keys team has now been in town for 30 years, so it is good to see that it has been supported by the community. It's good to see the young players trying to make a name for themselves.

Used to go there back when we had a houseboat at Raystown lake. Sold it along with the slip. What an *****uhydg move that was.

I loved minor league baseball growing up in Great falls, MT. They were then the rookie league affiliate of the San Francisco Giants (Great Falls Giants). You could get right down near the players. As young fans we would get down near the opposing bullpen and give the pitchers warming up so much grief I wonder how we weren't banned from that side of the field. I got to see the Amazing Peter Falcone pitch. YOU KNEW he was special from the outset. A fastball that made the mitt POP. HOF'r Jack Clark made some super human catches against the old wooden fence. AAAAAH those were the days.

I have many great MLB memories but some of the happiest, carnival-like experiences have been at Durham Bulls, Mud Hens and Louisville Bats games.

Minor league towns put the 'fan' in fanatic.

When the Twins moved into the Metrodome, my friends and I started driving down to Iowa for Class A ball. Cedar Rapids, Waterloo, Clinton, Burlington, Quad Cities. Tripla A ball in Des Moines with the I Cubs.

In 1993, when Mike Veeck brought the Saints to Saint Paul, we got season tickets, and started going to about 20 or 30 games a year. Veeck had become notorious for his promotions in Chicago. Disco Sucks Night deteriorated into a riot to go with the bonfire of disco LPs. He started doing a lot of promotions in Saint Paul. A lot of the wacky promotions you see now in minor league parks took their inspiration from Veeck, who also deserves a lot of the credit for the resurgence in interest in minor league ball.

Not in jail.

Been a Memphis Redbird, the Triple A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals, season ticket holder since 2000. Pretty cool seeing the stars before they were stars. Several times a year the season ticket holders get to meet the team. I remember talking to a very young and quite shy Yadier Molina about his future around 2003.

So far we're having a much better year than the Cardinals.

LIVE FROM THE DAWGHOUSE

The Sugar Land Skeeters ballpark is close enough to hear the Friday after game fireworks going off. I went to the game a couple years back with my best friend when the Skeeters were playing the league All Star team. Front row seats by the opposing teams dugout were $40 a pop. I love the atmosphere at these minor league stadiums. Much more family friendly and the jerks who cuss and scream get taken care of quick. Baseball at its best.


You never know who you will see playing there.

Love going to the game, ordering a fat slippery dog and a cold one. Only been a few times but it's just Americana, and I'm not even a big sports person.

Harrisburg, PA hosts the Senators, AA affiliate if the Washington Nationals.
I recall the best hotdogs, made by The Spot, formerly a Greek hotdog joint in Hbg. city...... Some of the best food available in the city prior to closing....

I am 60 , and I went to my first baseball game a couple of weeks ago . Went to Tampa to watch them play the Nationals . I tell you , I really enjoyed myself . Of course the stadium is enclosed and air conditioned which really helps in Florida . I was with my father in law and a friend of his , and they are both baseball freaks which helps because I know nothing . They told me I was lucky , in the eighth inning they put the pitcher on first , put him in the outfield , and brought in a new pitcher . He struck the guy out and everyone went back to their original position . They told me they had never seen it before . Pretty good first game .

Just got my Staten Island Pizza Rats hat and T shirt in the mail today. One of the funniest videos I've ever seen.

Used to enjoy going to Richmond Braves games with my first wife (the Good One). Saw many players from there move up to the Atlanta Braves. At one time, there were 6 Braves starters who I had watched play at Richmond.

Her late father was a scout for the Mets. Every game, the big wigs would come over to say hi to her.
