Default New WiFi Router Strength Spoils Me

The Old Apple AirPort Extreme router finally died, and several internet reviews recommended the ASUS RT-AC88U which I selected.

User friendly setup wizard and graphical interface, and tons of wiz-bang features made installation a breeze. The wireless range is leaps and bounds better than the old router. Every part of the house and property (about 125' signal distance) locks in a strong signal now.

I don't know why the signal is so much better, but it has four antenna and a feature called "Beam Forming" that supposedly focuses the signal at the receiving devices. Whatever the reason, it just works.

If your WFi router is old with marginal signal coverage or bandwidth, consider a new router to fix the issue.

Last year we switched from Verizon to Optimum/Altice and the new Altice system does not have a Router - at least in the sense of a separate component. The Router is built-in to the main Cable Box and the entire system, all cell phones, computers and printers work off of it. Works quite well and there is no separate Router to deal with.

I'm one to leave well enough alone, as long as your satisfied with that setup.

Most people probably have that combined configuration now, because there are very few separate routers sitting on store shelves anymore. My in-laws and children all have the combined units, and all except my son have some annoying holes in the wifi coverage somewhere in their homes.

...it may work like the beam antennas that ham radio operators use...four elements...and directional...so the transmission can be directed in a desired direction...

Yes, but the ham beam antenna has a rotator to change the direction of the beam. A router would need the same. Otherwise, we would need an omni directional antenna to cover all locations in the house/property.

Best,
Rick
