Mike, since you brought up Giant Steps, here is one of my absolute favorite bassists Henrik Linder. Fast forward to 1:15.

Notice his 'true temperament' frets. They don't affect playability but provide almost perfect intonation. I don't think they are quite necessary but do provide that MC Escher look.
