Burn starring Marlon Brando: set in the 17th century, Brando is a British agent fomenting rebellion among the slaves in a Portuguese colony in the Antillies. Great film.
1000 Clowns starring Jason Robards: excellent comedy. Robards plays Murray, fighting for custody of his nephew with social services.

The Ranger, the Cook, and a Hole In The Sky, with Sam Elliott, Jerry O'Connell, Ricky Jay. 1919 or so NW Montana USFS, and a young ranger joins a crew working there.
Good coming of age movie, and the card skills of Ricky Jay are a major part.

"Dinner Rush" is my go to "lesser known" film. Stumbled across it purely by accident when "Shackleton" with Kenneth Branagh was sold out and it was playing on the second screen at the theater. Great little gangster flick, Danny Aiello-a favorite of mine.
No disrespect but, perhaps because I'm a film geek, many of those mentioned are anything but lesser known. Regardless, lots of great films mentioned already, many of my favorites.

Alias Nick Beal
Key Largo
The Bishop's Wife, especially, with Cary Grant, David Niven and Loretta Young. Highly memorable clue is the hymn board behind Bishop as he preaches Christmas Eve sermon. Hymns 12, 268 and 382 for me sum up underlying themes (~ invitation, faith and works - hymns apparently from ECUSA 1940 Hymnal).
Regards,
Dyson

Surprised no one mentioned: The Legend of Evil Roy Slade (John Astin spoof on westerns); Wind and the Lion (Sean Connery (as Risuli) Brian Keith (Teddy Roosevelt and Candice Bergen (kidnap "victim") in US Marine Intervention in Morocco just prior to WWI; The Man Who Would Be King (Sean Connery and Michael Caine Adventuring in unexplored Afghanistan); "Zulu Dawn" to go with Zulu above on same event; Pork Chop Hill (Gregory Peck in Korean War); Caddy Shack, Make Way for Tomorrow, Across the Pacific and many more. Wife complains daily about too many DVDs, too many CDs, too many old beer steins, too many books, too many guns and too much ammo. My reply - Too bad! I tried not to duplicate, but apologize if I did.

To avoid embarrassing him, I won't say who, but a member recommended, The Getaway. But misspelled it, which may prevent someone finding the film. There was a remake years later. Both are pretty good.
I forgot to plug, The Marine 2. Note that that's The Marine TWO. There's also just, The Marine, a much less good film. You want the one with some wrestler turned actor and Lara Cox, who played Finn in the Third Season of, The Lost World (TLW) on TV. Lara is an Aussie but had a voice coach on TLW and fakes a US accent quite well. She plays the hero's wife.
I'm not suggesting this just because I have a sort of crush on Lara. It 's a surprisingly good action movie, in which a US Marine on leave has to save his wife and many others when terrorists occupy a luxury resort in Asia. The film was made in Thailand and the scenery is beautiful. And I mean the literal scenery, not just Lara and a couple of other actresses.
I like it partially because the hero uses a Beretta M-9 9mm, a favorite gun of mine.
I usually avoid simple shoot-'em-up action movies. But I really like this one. And not just for the girl from Canberra. Oh: the guy who plays her boss here was also a guest star on, The Lost World. (TLW, to fans.) As was his daughter, Anja Coleby. Small world...Robert Coleby played the scientist Maple-White, who discovered dinosaurs on the Lost World plateau, leading Prof. Challenger to form his expedition. As long as I'm reciting this, can I plug the DVD's for all three seasons of TLW? Lara as Finn was only in eight Third Season episodes, but you get Veronica and Marguerite in all seasons and some authentic guns for the period. (Disregard Lord Roxton's toy rifle in the first couple of episodes. It was soon replaced with what looks like a .416 Rigby, and I think he referred to it as such.)

Many of the movies listed above are in my favorites memory box. I'll add
Mountains of the Moon - the British search for and discovery of the source of the Nile in the 1800's - a riveting true story
Get Low, starring Robert Duvall - the story of a hermit and the quest by townspeople for why he exiled himself from them. Has more layers than an onion, way under-rated, IMHO.

They were, but I thought the remake was much better. Not only because of Kim Basinger, but she sure didn't hurt the movie!

The Marine 2: Part 1 video
Oh, look! I found The Marine 2 that I mentioned above, on YouTube. Says this is Part 1. Guess they have later parts, too. ??
The DVD has much better resolution, but this is free and will let you have a feel for the movie.
The star is Ted DiBiase, and I already mentioned Lara Cox as his wife. Another hot chick is a Russian, and I think another girl is Filipina. Lara and the man who plays her boss are Australian, but use fake US accents.
Enjoy!

Many interesting suggestions-some I am researching. Thanks, all.
I saw these movies 20-30 years ago and they brought good memories. Many things have changed since then. Would love to find them again one day:
Savannah Smiles-no big names, and unfortunately, the star of the show is no longer with us, but just a beautiful story of how love can overcome.
Trapped in Paradise-another one where the love of good people triumph. Starring Nicolas Cage, Dana Carvey and Jon Lovitz.
Finnegan, Begin Again-starred Mary Tyler Moore and Robert Preston. Was made for HBO way back when. Anybody else recall?

Cape Fear (the original)
A Man Called Horse - IMHO one of Richard Harris' greater movies. That Sun Dance scene is incredible.
Did I mention The Princess Bride? "Hallo"

Lone Star-In the Texas border town of Frontera, Sheriff Sam Deeds (Chris Cooper) digs up the past when he finds an old skull in the desert. As he traces the murder of Sheriff Charlie Wade (Kris Kristofferson) 40 years earlier, Deeds' investigation points toward his late father, the much-loved Deputy Buddy Deeds.
The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada-When brash Texas border officer Mike Norton (Barry Pepper) wrongfully kills and buries the friend and ranch hand of Pete Perkins (Tommy Lee Jones), the latter is reminded of a promise he made to bury his friend, Melquiades Estrada (Julio Cesar Cedillo), in his Mexican home town. He kidnaps Norton and exhumes Estrada's corpse, and the odd caravan sets out on horseback for Mexico. As Estrada's body begins to rot, Norton begins to unravel, but Perkins remains determined to honor his vow.

If you like a light hearted comedy, "Beer For My Horses" is hard to beat. The credits read like a who's who of outlaw country music.

"Death Rides A Horse." Completely overshadowed by the Leone films, and suffering from video/audio quality, it is a "diamond in the rough" and it still probably deserves a spot in the Top 10 Spaghetti Westerns of all time.
Some crazy good shootin at 9:20 LOL.

RE: "The Thing"=Both the original B & W and the John Carpenter. NOT the third. BTW: NOT obscure!
Many of these are not obscure! For instance: "Point Blank" with Lee Marvin.
Good one: "The Tracker" with Kristofferson.
RE: "The Ranger, the Cook, and a Hole In The Sky", with Sam Elliott, Jerry O'Connell, Ricky Jay. Written by Norman MacClean who also wrote "Young Men and Fire" about the Mann Gulch tragedy in the late 1940's==redone as "Red Skies of Montana" with Richard Widmark. Great read!

Sailor of the King, 1953 and Brown on Resolution, 1935. Both based upon the 1929 C. S. Forester novel Brown on Resolution, about a British sailor who held a German warship captive while anchored next to a small island. The German warship was attempting to complete repairs after battle damage during the encounter with Brown's warship. Brown used a rifle from high up in the islands rocks to keep the German work parties from doing their work. Both movies very good, as is the novel, but the 1953 version stars Jeffery Hunter and is a little more modern, using WWII British warships and in the Pacific.

We rented it on VHS not long after it came out and must have backed it up to watch the end of that scene 20 times!

"Onionhead" 1958 with Andy Griffith, Felicia Farr, Walter Matthau, James Gregory, and Joey Bishop.
If I had watched it prior to joining Uncle Sam's Cool Group, I might have been better prepared for boot camp
