Default Favorite lesser known movies

We all have favorite movies that are well known. What movies do you like that are lesser known “jewels”?
My personal favorite is “Matewan”, about the coal strikes of the early 1900s and subsequent gun battle or massacre in and around Matewan West Virginia.
If you’ve never seen it check it out.

"The Grey Fox" was a favorite, a real feel-good flick shot in beautiful surroundings.

There was one about a Wehrmacht soldier cut off from his unit and avoiding advancing Allied troops that was memorable. It was shot in black and white, and there was no music and no dialogue, just sound. I can't remember the title, and I'm probably one of about seventeen people who ever saw it, but it was truly gripping.

Peter Sellers starred in a nice little flick called "Heaven's Above" (yes the apostrophe is correctly placed, as it was in the title), in which he played an Anglican vicar. It was vastly different from his Clouseau character, and the humor was gentler. Also shot in black and white, as I recall.

The first movie that jumps to mind is Hopscotch starring Walter Matthau who plays a game of cat and mouse as a fumbling ex-CIA agent tormenting his old boss.

Christmas Eve evening I like to watch The Ref, a comedy starring Denis Leary as a cat burglar who takes a bickering couple hostage on Christmas Eve.

Another favorite is The Saint, starring Val Kilmer as the suave international thief Simon Templar.

"Safari", with Victor Mature and Janet Leigh.

"Northwest Frontier", with Kenneth More (not Moore) and Lauren Bacall.

"Watusi" (sic), with George Montgomery and Taina Elg.

I saw all in theatres when young, and I have the DVD's for the first two. Can't find the last on DVD.

"Mad Love" (US title. The Spanish title was, "Juana la Loca", Joan the Crazy. Pilar Lopez de Ayala was the star. Won Best Foreign Picture for Spain at the Oscar ceremony the year it appeared. Has English or French subtitles if you don't understand Castilian Spanish.

"Battle of Britain", 1969 version. Christopher Plummer, Susannah York, Michael Caine, Sir Laurence Olivier, many other major UK actors. I've seen the DVD at low prices. A MAJOR bargain!

"Star 80", with Mariel Hemingway as the doomed model and actress Dorothy Stratten. Cliff Robertson as Hugh Hefner, and Eric Roberts as Paul Snider. I also liked the version of this real life tragedy starring Jamie Lee Curtis, but think it may have been on TV, not in theaters.

"Africa Ablaze". Also had another title. Based on Wilbur Smith's book, "The Train From Katanga." Rod Taylor, Yvette Mimieux and Kenneth More, as the alcoholic doctor.

Almost all of these can be had on DVD.

"A Touch of Larceny", a classic British "small comedy" starring James Mason as a Royal Navy officer who figures out a way to greatly increase his retirement income.

and

"Detour", the greatest "B" movie of them all, starring an unforgettable Ann Savage as the toughest woman you'd never want to meet.

One of my favorites- "State and Main".

Philip Seymour Hoffman, William H. Macy, Alec Baldwin, Sarah Jessica Parker, Charles Durning are a few of the actors.

It's a comedy about trying to make a movie in small-town America. No special effects, just a good story, and I watch it every now and then.

"Being There" with Peter Sellers. This isn't his usual slapstick comedy, like the Pink Panther movies. It's very dry, droll, witty, and low key, incorporating both comedy and drama.

Another one I like is "Barbarians at the Gate" with James Garner. It's about the leveraged buyout of RJR Nabisco and greed.

The last one I'll mention is "The Frisco Kid" with Gene Wilder and Harrison Ford. It's a western with both comedy and dramatic elements.

Must have had a big impact on me as I still recall a movie seen in 1957. We grew up on a ranch in New Mexico and about once a month on a Saturday we would go to the "big town" (Tucumcari) about 60 miles away for grocery shopping, etc. My older brother and I would always go to the movie, didn't matter what was showing (only theater in town) we would watch it. We once seen a movie, "Monkey On My Back" starring Cameron Mitchell. My brother and I watched that movie closely several times and never (repeat never) seen that damn monkey. Found out much later it was a movie about WWII veteran who had been wounded and was addicted to morphine.

“The Gods must be crazy”
The humor ranges from dry to slapstick, some of the scenery is pretty, the quasi-documentary nature of it is nostalgic.

+1 for The Gods. I remember seeing that movie. The bushman (of the Kalahari) main character was a hoot!

Two of my favorites that meet this criteria:

Suicide Kings

The Asphalt Jungle

The Asphalt Jungle was one of, if not the first, credited screen roles for Marilyn Monroe.

Regards,

Dave

PS - I would like to add "Welcome to Collinwood". Starring William H. Macy, and George Clooney has a minor guest starring role. Absolutely hilarious.

Regards,

Dave

I have 2 and they are The Flim Flam Man with George C Scott and Harry Morgan is a great sheriff. It is set in the rural South and one of the funniest movies. The second is Stealing Home with Jodie Foster and a very young Mark Harmon. It is a coming of age movie and I really like it.

This is a car chase from Flim Flam:

The Steel Lady:
A downed airplane crew recovers a buried WW II German tank, which was uncovered by a desert storm, complete with dead crew in the African desert. They get the tank operational and get into a running battle with the natives and finally discover the Germans had looted their treasure and the natives wanted it back. The movie was made in the 50s and I believe shot in B&W on 16mm film. After much searching; I managed to obtain a DVD transfer a few years ago.

Good choices on, MacBeth and, Body Heat. Wish I'd mentioned those. That 1971 movie is the best production of, MacBeth I've seen. Outstanding cast and settings, and younger key actors in some roles.

The mention of, Body Heat reminded me of, Basic Instinct, one of my favoite murder mysteries.

One of my favorites that many never saw (these days, anyway):
"The Flight of the Phoenix"(1965 version) with one heck of a cast, Jimmy Stewart, George Kennedy, Ernest Borgnine, Peter Finch, and others I can't remember at the moment.
....and.... "They Drive by Night" (1940), a classic B&W with George Raft, Ida Lupino, Ann Sheridan, and Humphrey Bogart. Raft out Bogart's Bogart in this one, and you can see where Bogart found his style..... And Ida Lupino prior to her directing career - what an eye full. Another gathering of real talent.
