I'm that old geezer that drives the speed limit.
People behind me wave hello, with their middle finger,
they honk, and I see them talking to me in my rear view mirror.
Most drivers think those speed limit signs are just suggestions.
Meanwhile a fellow on a bicycle was killed a few days ago.
An elderly lady was killed in a crosswalk. SPEED KILLS!

Zero (0) in 43 years .. legally driving .. drove a farm truck for over a year before that .. so none since 1964 ..

1 parking ticket for parking by a fire hydrant that
I hadn't seen as it was blocked by garbage cans ..

But got pulled over about 2 weeks ago for being a suspicious person .. My wife and I were driving around looking for houses with a for sale sign in the front yard .. As we have decided to move from the country place we have now .. police car pulled up in back of me .. and flashed her lights .. was doing between 12 nd 15 mph .. She laughed when we told her what we were doing .. said she had seen us going very slowly and slowing down then speeding back up .. ..

I had gotten out and looked in the windows of a house and think
someone called the police on me .. she ran my plates and license
after I told her I wasn't carrying at the time .. Had came from the hospital
where conceal carry isn't allowed .. is the reason why ..

I started driving when there was no speed limit in Montana. On the edge of a town there would be a sign that said "end of speed zone". Thats what it meant too. I had a couple of hot rods and then a red 68 Camaro, no speeding tickets, then along came the federal 55 mph speed limit. The fine in Montana was $5 pay on the spot and didn't go on your record. At that time I had a 75 Trans Am with a built 455. Top end was 160mph. I got loads of tickets. I am sure over 50. But, I also got some others like, reckless driving, night time speeding, failure to drive in a careful and prudent manner. Basically, only went past 100mph twice a trip. Starting and stopping. I was living in Montana and working in N Dakota. Had a fleeing a police officer in ND. $500 fine in those days and no driving in ND. I had managed to out run them at night every other time. But, in the flats of central N Dakota a 2-3 mile lead on a Sheriff's Dodge with a 440, doesn't mean much, a little over a minute if he can hit 140 and he could. Turned down road that dead ended in a farmers yard. Bummer. Simple solution to keep driving was get a second license in another name. Yup, I was a speed demon. It wasn't that hard 35 years ago. Finally got caught at that. Revoked for 1 year. Finally sold sports cars. Went to 4x4s. Kept it fairly clean for the last 30 years. Maybe one speeding ticket every 3 years or so for a while then almost never. Have been stopped in Montana a couple times since I moved home but just get a warning. Old guy. I did get one in Idaho though about 5 years ago. Cruising down a 2 lane road at about 65. Just being normal because in Montana 2 lane is 70mph. Just space out that Idaho was 55 on 2 lane.

I still bump 5 mph over sometimes, but that about it and with the speed limit on 2 lane being 70 and the interstate 80 that's fast enough. Here the HPs usually won't stop you at 5 mph over.

WA State Licensing (DOL) Official Site: Driving under the influence

Many times, if people know that others have been arrested or convicted of DUI, they'll see them driving and just assume that they are driving on a free and unrestricted license. Many times, they're just driving with no license. Most, if not all states have a provision to pull your license for 90 days upon arrest for a DUI. In Missouri, if you blow over .08%, you're gonna lose it for 90 days, and for 30 of it, you can't even get a restricted license. Washington looks to be similar. There's an appeal procedure, which it looks like Washington has, but ultimately, at some point, you're gonna get a least a restricted license.

Of course the worst part is that they tell your insurance company right away . . .

From 16 to 20 I did a little street drag racing and got 8 or ten they were all my fault I was in the wrong .My dad was a cop and I guess I stupidly tried to hang with the wrong crowd . I got married at 20 and moved into my own place with my wife traded my chevelle on a 4 door sedan and settled down .My last ticket went off my insurance when I was 25 or so and I only got a seat belt ticket since then. Dad told me back in the day "keep it up son we need all the revenue we can get .Him and mom went up to Virginia to visit some family he got stopped for speeding on the interstate so he must have been running fast . This patrolman asks for his insurance and license information and dad " accidently" let's him see his lawenforcement ID ,this cop asks " so you are lawenforcement " .dad replies oh yea got 3 years to retirement .He gets in this conversation and mentions he went to traffic school in Kentucky come to find out they both know a couple of instructors the cop asks him so did you pass the course dad was like sure he said well sir you should know better than to speed up and down the interstate then while handing him his ticket. Dad was not amused .I was lol . Later he sent a letter to the Viginia State Troopers saying how nice and professional this young man was and he didn't "like" getting a ticket but he was impressed by the officer.I guess he was trying to look out for next time just in case .

I've had a few most when I was a teen. Last was in Cody Wy about 5 yrs ago...33 in a 30. Did get stopped last year in Powell Wy. Little problem with my tags. They were over a month expired. Wifes truck. She had the new stickers..in the console in fact..just never put 'em on. He already knew the tags had been renewed. He thought it was kinda funny. Thanked him and put them on when I got to the store a couple of blocks farther on. Most of the time I am doing the speed suggestion or less and get passed by most. I must admit the police don't bother you too much out on the road..Many towns here do have revenue enhancement officers. The town I happen to live near(178 inhabitants) has a part time cop..the next town down the road(pop 190) is his 2nd half of the day gig.

I have been stopped a few times in over 50 years of driving. The first one was coming home from visiting my girlfriend (first wife) at Penn State University in 1969 or 70. It was a Sunday and I was leaving late to get back to NJ for my 10 o'clock shift at he old Shell station. It was about a 4 hour trip and I probably had 3 hours and 50 minutes to make it. I got behind a school bus that seemed like he was driving in a funeral so at the first clear spot I booted it (in my Triumph GT 6) and crossed the double yellow to pass him. Sure enough one of the local officers of the law was there and pulled me over. I explained the cause for my error and he had me follow him to the local judges house. Said if the judge was home, I would have to face the music. IIRC, the judge was either not home or maybe he told the officer to let me go because I don't recall getting a ticket.

Maybe a couple of others over the years. One for running a red light but fought that one because the morning sun completely blotted out the light. Got off. Another time was stopped taking a short cut in my 14' box truck on a road that doesn't allow commercial vehicles over 2 1/2 tons. He also claimed that I wasn't wearing my seat belt. Fought that one too and won because I had a customer in the area write me a letter stating that I was coming to her house to do an estimate for work and that road was the only way to get there.

All in all, I have been stopped way fewer times than I should have been and have driven a few times after parties when I probably should not have. So far my guardian angel has worked overtime and taken care of me.

Been driving 40 yrs now. Knock on wood never had a ticket. Considering all the stupid things I did on the street in my youth; there were times it would have been well deserved. Once i hit my 20’s I stopped racing and quit drinking so avoided most chances for poor and dangerous decision making.
Now i tend to stick close to or at the limit unless in a pack on the interstate when i dont want to get ran over lol.

First speeding ticket was in 1966. Another one in 1968. Written warning for speeding in 2002. Not too bad for 53 years as a licensed driver.

In between, wearing a badge for 24 years, I probably issued 5,000 or more speeding tickets. Unless assigned to work a specific location I always worked residential areas and school zones. My tolerance was 10MPH over the posted limit, figuring that a driver either knew he was speeding or wasn't paying enough attention to drive safely. Never wrote a ticket for less than 10 over. Wrote lots of tickets for 20, 30, even 40 over.

Always tested the radar equipment at the beginning and end of every shift. Once had a radar unit go bad on me, wrote a memo to the prosecutors recommending every ticket issued after the last good test be dismissed.

Probably heard every excuse. Probably heard every argument. Was offered a few bribes. Was offered sexual favors by attractive young women. Was physically assaulted a few times. More death threats than I can really remember. Those who contested the tickets always seemed to get court dates on my days off, while I was working graveyard shifts, or during my vacations (I was required to show up anyway, most of the time without overtime payment).

IMO, speeding is usually just a bad habit that people get into and can't seem to break out of. We have all heard people openly bragging about making "really good time" on a road trip, travelling much faster than speed limits, getting away from a cop, etc. Lots of folks seem to think all of this is normal behavior.

Personally, I tend to drive like a frightened old lady most of the time. On road trips I use cruise control, usually set 2 or 3 MPH below the limit. Other drivers fly by me like I am sitting still, ride my bumper, flash their lights, blast their horns, wave with less than 5 fingers.

After my employer went out of business in my younger days and was driving around on Central Parkway in Cincinnati, thinking about what to do next, I was pulled over and further impoverished by my first speeding ticket. I was not paying close attention and did not notice the reduction in the speed limit from 50mph to 35 mph. My next one was maybe 10 years ago in the City of Lockland, Ohio. There is a short part of an otherwise 35 mph secondary road that is at 25 mph with a curb indentation just big enough to park a car. After an hour with my children crying and a number of other policeman arriving on the scene with lights flashing, apparently because I had Texas plates, the original LEO (after appreciated direction and argument from his colleagues) "Let me go" with a ticket for doing 35mph in a 25mph zone.

I've had one. Not saying I haven't deserved others, but that's the only one I've ever gotten or even been stopped for.

These days, it's just under the limit, on cruise control. Feel free to pass anytime.

In five decades of driving I can recall a total of five tickets. After getting a ticket by radar I broke down and bought an Escort telling myself no more tickets. Since then I got nailed by laser on an Interstate and an airplane while driving on the Interstate. I honestly believe in all cases I was driving safely in minimal traffic. Speeding tickets are selective enforcement of unrealistic driving laws.

Long ago I developed the habit of scanning carefully ahead, slowing down going over hills and curves, and watching my mirrors. Lucky enough not to get caught by something like an unmarked Mustang. On the Interstate when somebody flies by me at high speed, I kick it up following them from a safe distance. Have to watch when they turn off so I'm not the leader.

Last one I got was in 1987. Got written up by a PFC MP at Ft. Bliss for really burning up the road, 22 MPH in a 15 MPH school zone on a Saturday with no school in session. The kid was in 7th heaven, A PFC getting to write up a Sergeant Major. I just mailed the fine in to the Federal Magistrate Traffic Court, no fuss, no muss. When I told my CO about it, he cracked up.

Not saying how many years I've been driving, but only 2 speeding tickets.
Last one was 35 years ago. Could have/should have been a lot more. I've almost always had sports/fast cars. I still "push the envelope"

Skated on several possible whiskey tickets in my 20's. Figure my luck on that was used up long ago so no driving impaired.

Was 1998 I had just gotten of a 12 hour shift was on the interstate 45 minutes from home. Had my 1988 Mustang GT when this guy in a Corvette pulled along side me and gave me the "Nod" Off we went about 30 seconds later the Red and Blue were in the rear view.. I Trooper sped past me after the Corvette the second Trooper pulled in behind me.. Ran up to my window and in a very LOUD VOICE "STAY HERE" and got back into his car, and took off. Almost an hour later Trooper pulls up behind me and asked why am I sitting on the side of the interstate I informed him I was waiting for the trooper to return. Guess I got off lucky because the Corvette made the local news being stolen and all.

I too use a cruise control, when there is one, to keep from speeding. BUT I set it app 5 over & still get the tail gaiting & waves. IMO setting it for UNDER the limit is just asking for trouble. At that speed hazard lights & staying permanently in the right lane might be a good thing. We have enough "father figures" out there.

I had my share of “performance driving awards “ in my younger day. Inherited my heavy foot from both parents. Now that I’m old I drive the speed limit just to be obstinate. Speeding ticket, how many you got?

My SO’s mother quit driving at age 95 with a perfect record.

Talking WHILE ON A SNOWMOBILE!

AT age 16 (1973?) while snowmobiling at twitchel lake in the Adirondacks, me & 2 other underage buddies went into town for beer/supplies. Snowmobiles were the only way to get around. A "guy" in a green Parka pulls out directly in front of me & my Evinrude that had no brakes & a case of beer lashed to the seat. Ramming him into a nearby snow bank I began shooting off my big teenage mouth Until he pulls back his parka revealing a badge. Ignoring the underage beer possession he asks for a registration. I think I came back with a snappy remark like HUH, what registration. My first run in with the law in a motorized vehicle! He must have felt sorry for my sorry butt & simply said "get out of here". I offered to help pull his machine out & he said "leave before I change my mind". Beginners luck I guess. 27 Years later these 2 jokers I was with were both best men at my wedding (1 was needed to TRY & KEEP the other in line). Upon first meeting my future wife they told her to NEVER let me drive. She got that same advice from plenty others & she still doesn't.

In May 2018 I discovered that Virginia is for speed traps. It was 1 in the morning, driving from Michigan back home to my place in Winston Salem. Only one other car, coming up in the left lane with his brights on, and we were on a long downhill. I looked down at the speedometer and realized that I had coasted to 80 mph on the gauge. Hit the brakes to slow down ---------- and lights came on from the ditch and he pulled out. I wasn't sure if he was after me or the guy in the lane who was closing on me, but he got behind me and let him pass by.

He claimed that he got me on radar at 84 mph, but I never saw that on my speedometer (so I still think that he had the other car). He told me that in Virginia anything over 10 is automatic reckless driving so he only wrote the ticket for 80 in a 70. Within days I had letters from 4 attorneys offering to represent me on the speeding ticket.

Paid one attorney $90 to handle it and the ticket was changed from speeding to "defective equipment" so no points or moving violation. When the cop came up he asked me how long since my last ticket and I told him that he was going to find that after over 40 years of driving my record is clean.

Last one I got was when I was 19. I was driving a private cab back from LaGuardia airport( dropped off my usual ride)headed to the Bronx at 3am on the Buckner Expressway.
No one was on the road.....but me and a Highway 1 cop hiding on the on ramp I was doing 85 in a 45, but he cut me a break @ 60. I was shocked, those guys would give their mother a ticket with no break.
I’ve never gotten a speeder since.

Got 2 in the same place on the same day once. Going to see the girlfriend and coming home. The second one the officer didn't even ask to see my info, said he already had it. Been married to that girl for thirty five years now.

When I was commuting to work the morning talk show I listened to blew the whistle on a county in Maryland that was running the school zone flashers in the middle of the night and ticketing drivers. I'll let you draw your own conclusions as to their motivations.

Only ticket while operating a motor vehicle that I got was for a dead headlight. Now one night got off work at 1am. Cranked my Dodge Dart with the 318 engine on the parkway. Had it up to 115 and spotted the dreaded gumball way back in the distance. just took my foot off the gas until I got to the 55 miles per hour. Cops pulled along side my car and I heard one say "that's not him" Talk about being relieved. Frank

I was up for a promotion which meant I would have to move out of the sole charge station and police house I was living in. My wife said she would refuse to move back into her house unless she had a new stove and dishwasher installed, so on a Sunday morning I drove over an hour to the "local" appliance store in my diesel 4X4 wagon.

At the store I found I could only get one of the two boxes into the rear compartment. I was leaving town thinking about having to make an other trip back on another day off. I just wasn't thinking and thought I was in the 70 km/h area so accelerated.

Luckily the speedo in that vehicle read high because I came around a corner and found three local cops with a laser. I got a ticket for 67 in a 50 km/h area.

My wife was indignant that I didn't play the cop card to get out of the ticket. I just shut up, paid the fine and was very careful of my speed for the 2 years I had the demerit points recorded against my license.

But I have given out a few tickets in the last 34 years, and some of the excuses make me smile. When I drove an unmarked car I would see a vehicle coming up behind me in the mirror and switch the radar to same lane mode as the driver overtook. As the car came into the radar I would lock the reading and hit the red/blues/siren. Even the bright yellow safety vest I was wearing didn't seem to register with most drivers.

One day I passed some speed reduction advisory signs where I knew the speed reduced right before a school. It was 8:30 on a weekday morning, so I slowed down to the reduced speed in the advisory zone. A car came roaring past me as I came past the school gates. He demanded to know why I had slowed down before the official signs. When I told him it was because of the school he said "What school"?

These days I set my cruise control right on the limit, even when I know the speedo is reading high, and just cruise along. I tend to get overtaken a lot though.

Got two tickets . Both times by the state patrol . Once in Minnesota driving a Triumph Spitfire and the other in Wyoming in a Pontiac station wagon. Was guilty both times.

I did get stopped in Wisconsin driving a Corvette Indianapolis 500 pace car that my brother was delivering to a dealer in Chicago. In that case I was not speeding . I am extremely careful in Wisconsin because I know how strict they are in that state. I think the patrolman probably thought that two young guys driving a car like that must have something illegal in the vehicle.

I argued with him and got a warning .

Been driving for 37 years, everything from emergency vehicles, motorcycles and commercial vehicles and never a ticket of any kind - over 2 million miles, 330,000+ on a motorcycle. Not saying I haven’t earned one, just never received any; conversely, I’ve written thousands.

Edit: Now 40 years ticket free.

I received a warning ticket for speeding when I was 16. That was 60 years ago and haven't received another speeding warning or ticket since then.

Sure! Had dozens of tickets, mostly 10 to 15 mph over the posted speed limit and not that proud of them either.
Until I got to be about 30 and figured out it was a lot less stressful
just to comply.
On a special note, I once was complimented for pulling over quickly in front of a sheriff who had just nailed me on a wide open two lane country road for exceeding the 55mph sign and he told me I was the first person he didn't have to chase down that day.
Haven't had a speeding ticket for over twenty years now.

A friend once told me "You drive like Ben Hur."

A few weeks after getting to the US I was driving an unfamiliar large pickup truck. New American buddy said I drove, "like his granddad what with my careful speed and both hands on the wheel". As the words came out of his mouth we crested a rise and looked straight down the barrel of a radar gun. Without changing the tone or cadence of his voice he continued, "Not that it's always a bad thing", which, naturally, put us both into convulsive laughter, much to the puzzlement of the cop as we drove by.

Being retired I often get bored so to mitigate my wrestlesness, I occasionally pull wiggle wagons (triples and Rocky Mountain doubles) around Nevada and Utah.

I have had my share - but I do not think I have any in the last 25 - 30 years. In the mid 1980s i think I had maybe 4 or so within 15 months. I got a letter from the Mississippi Highway Patrol requesting that I visit them at the Sunflower County Sheriff's office on an appointed date and time. I did so, and after talking with them, they told me my driver's license was being suspended for two weeks, but they were "suspending the suspension" - so I kept on driving. I have sometimes wondered if my license was actually suspended.

Got my first drivers license in 1959 (about 59 years ago). For 11 years I was a sales rep for Gerber Products Co. ( yeah, the Baby food company. Had a new company car every year. Drove from 30K to 40K every year during that tine.

I've always believed that the more miles you drive the more "opportunities" you have for: Flat tires, running out of gas, breakdown...and SPEEDING TICKETS. Guess I proved that rightly enough. On two separate occasions I got letters from the state advising me that should I receive one more moving violation in the next 6 months that I would have to go before a judge and show a reason why I should not lose my driving privileges.

Other than that I have probably averaged about 8K to 9K per year while I worked for Shell Oil Co... 25years. I only live 2.5 miles from the plant. Since I retired in 2000 I average 5K to 6K. Cars, motorcycles pi9ck-up trucks, light trucks and vans.

I know there is a number out there somewhere but I couldn't even get in the ball park with a guess. Lets just say it was a bunch and call it a good guess.

I'm pretty hard headed but the State of Texas FINALLY taught me the wisdom of obeying the traffic laws of our great state. My Last ticket was about 12 or 13 years ago.

Four of them stand out in my memory. here's the short versions:

.on the loop 610 (during the CB radio craze {I was KCR-6795, The Mongoose}). I called for ba :smokey report. The Weight Watcher came back, "Clean and Green Mr. Mongoose. You shake the trees and I'll Rake the leaves".

I pot my foot in it.

The Weight Watcher turned out to be the WAIT Watcher...a Texas DPS officer. He was waitin' and he was watchin. Got me.

.Goin' east o I-10 about 25 miles from Shreveport, La. in my yellow 1977 Monte Carlo. I whizzed by a DPS cruiser who was facing the other way. Had my trusty CB on ch 19 and suddenly some guy comes on and yells "Hey, did'jall see that smokey bear come out of the median!?!? Man, he was slingin' dirt and grass everywhere!!!"

Another guy comes on and says "Yeah, He's hot after that yellow Monte Carlo!"

I just sighed, slowly shook my head and pulled over to the shoulder. He got me.

.Driving my 4-cylinder Ford Maveric *** company car in a strange neighborhood at 10:00AM one morning. Looked in the rear view and saw a huge ford Grill about a foot off my rear bumper. Tailgater? I sped up some. That's when he hit me with the siren.

Turns out I was in a school zone that was in effect until 10:15AM. All the ones around my area ended at 09:45AM.

Huge old guy in HPD uniform Pulled me out with his gun drawn and spread me out on the hood of my little Maveric. Said I was trying to run. I asked him if he really thought I was trying to out run his big police interceptor in a 4-cylinder ***. Didn't phrase it very well. He shook me and put the muzzle of his revolver against5 the back of my neck.

We went back and forth a bit and I pointed out that I was unable to see his light bar because he was so close behind me, shoot, I coudn't even see the top of his hood. He got me.

He was pretty mad but I think he believed me. He gave me a ticket for 30 in a 20....but he didn't tell me to have a nice day.

.I-45 north bound going through Huntsville in my Chevy Nova *** company car. Passed a DPS officer on the side of the road pointing his radar gun at passing traffic. A ways farther up two officers were waving some us over. One came up tome and while he was writing my ticket I could hear on his police radio, "Brown Caddy inside lane...Blue Ford Pick-up center lane...".

I Pointed out that I was barely over the limit and many cars were going lots faster than me. He asked me if I'd ever seen one on those nature shows where a lion is chasing a heard of deer. I told him I had. He asked me if I noticed which one he targeted.

Together, in unison we said...THE SLOWEST ONE. He got me

Back in the UK as a "brash young fellow" I was accused of driving a 1948 MG TC at 65 mph in a 50 limit. Bear in mind this was in the late 1950s and the car could not do 65 downhill with a following gale! I told the magistrate this "fact" and asked if I could have a signed letter from the cop attesting to my excessive speed as it would help me sell the car! He was laughing so hard at my "cheeky response" that he simply told me to get lost in so many words. Needless to say, the local constabulary were not amused as they reckoned that I was "taking the mickey out of them". SteveLV will understand. Dave_n

Well hows that story go? One time I was caught crossing from a main street of a large town into a smaller more exclusive community, 35 mph to a 20 and a older cop walks up to my pulled over work truck and it's during a light rain storm. He starts writing
out my earned ticket, however his ink pen decides to **** out and the officer politely ask my if I have a pen. I had second thoughts but complied with his request and then I had more second hand thoughts.

Not sure if the police still do this, but for a long time they would drive about 5 under the limit. Everyone was too chicken to pass him and queued up behind. I always passed them, being careful to not go over the limit. Never got a ticket for passing a police car.

Got one once in a school zone though.

One. New Hampshire in 1973. Went to the Exxon gas station, paid the judge the $10.00 fine and filled my gas tank.

New Hampshire was a lot different back then.

I learned how to beat the radar system while in court. I fixed the officers car, he fixed my ticket about 50 years ago. I learned my lesson.

Back in the UK the motorway cops used to cruise between 55 and 60 in the slow lane because that way they saved the taxpayer money and had more time to see stuff. This caused the inevitable knot of traffic that refused to go faster than 65. I came upon one of these knots at 75 (70 limit) and just blew by unabated because I knew he wasn't interested. I was right, but the funniest thing was watching a father in the center lane point at my car and obviously indicating that I was about to get pinched. His kids must have been very disappointed.

I figured out it was easier to not get caught speeding than it was to have to pour and finish concrete patio's for friendly officers.

I never received a speeding ticket myself, but did give a bunch. I usually allowed 10 over the speed limit except when in a school zone and it was 8 over. I also usually issued a warning if the driver had a clean driving record, however if they were untruthful regarding their driving record they were slammed for the full amount. Passing a school bus loading or unloading children never, never got a break, my personal pet peeve.

I've had a few and may have another in the mail. Was up in BC last week and went through a RCMP photo radar setup. I'm hoping there were too many bugs on my front plate to ID my truck.

In the last 30 years or so none! That includes a few years of driving a large CDL type truck delivering building supplies when I retired from my union and a Vette on the road for 6 months of each year.

In the past, street racing in Albany was a big thing in the 60s early 70s and I did my share, got a couple way back then. I should have got quite a few more, but 6 cylinder cop cars that Albany had then could not stay up with our 4-550+ HP V8 cars.

In the between times got a couple, and quite a few serious tongue lashings!
