Default Never Mind Forest Fires or Firearms: The real danger: Straws

Some California towns will now put you in jail for using a straw. The People's Republic of California is finally addressing an important concern and efficiently using its resources.

California town will jail you for using a plastic straw

In the audio, we are told that EVERYTHING starts on the coast moves to the Midwest.

For people living in California, this law should be the last straw!

Well, as usual. this has a real background, but media specializing in creating fake outrage are making it sound much worse than it is.

Nobody is going to jail for using plastic straws anywhere, including in those few cities in California that seem to have no bigger problems.

The laws are all about prohibiting restaurant owners and food outlets giving out free single-use plastic straws with the food. Just like with bans on styrofoam cups and plastic shopping bags elsewhere, it’ll be inconvenient, but they’ll come up with alternatives.

In the meantime, you can buy and use your own plastic straws to your heart’s content. The headilne “California town will jail you for using a plastic straw” is simply wrong.

When the California SWAT team tosses stun grenades into your restaurant booth and takes you to the detention center and locks you up with the other straw users, do not say you were not warned!:-)

Hmmm. Don't want to get political, but you'd think certain people in California would have something better to do with their time and with their constituents' money. Obviously not. Gotta make something big out of something stupid.

Somebody somewhere recently pulled a straw from a sea turtle's nostril.

The last time I ate in California, I was given a paper straw. I remember when I was a young boy that we had paper straws, no plastic. However, California snowflakeism is a form of mental disease.

Plastic straws have been an ongoing ecological disaster ever since the first one rolled off a conveyor belt at wherever they make the things. Imagine how many billions or maybe even trillions of the things have been made and thrown away.

Lots of places can't even recycle them. We have a multi-million-dollar recycling facility here, but they won't knowingly take plastic straws. The equipment won't process them. So then the city has to pay people to pull them off conveyors if they can spot them. Guess who pays city employees' salaries?

So from the very first day, they've ended up in landfills. They end up in our rivers, streams, lakes, oceans. Don't pretend you haven't seen them. I find them, and every other kind of human garbage, almost every day out in the woods and in the mountains, miles from any human habitat. They'll never go away, never degrade. They'll still be there in the year 3018. They get ingested by wildlife, especially sea life. Guess what? They can't process them, either. They're everydamnwhere, and they're one of the things that'll eventually kill this planet. And us. Luckily, I won't be around to see it.

Bash and make fun of California all you wish. You reap what you sow. We might not, but your great-grandkids and great-great-grandkids will...bet on it.

That sounds arbitrary and capricious to me.
The city council in Santa Barbara has you covered.

Their resolution is helpfully linked in the article above (although the "Washington Examiner" must count on their readers being too lazy to read it, because it disproves their headline).

Apparently, plastic cutlery and stirrers are now treated like sex: they have to ask, and anything but a definite yes from the customer means no!

People who want to use plastic straws in California should be able to buy plastic straw credits from persons who live in states that allow plastic straws but who voluntarily agree not to use them.

I see one person gets it. Our little town recycles. We have a refuse container and a recycle container. Recycle container is placed at the curb every other week. Takes plastic but only certain recycle codes. Takes tin cans and aluminum but not glass. Not that much glass but some like pickle and olive jars. I like the system and use it.

I rarely agree with what the looney Cali politicians do (my knee-jerk reaction is to automatically disagree).....but I do think that stuff (such as straws) that can be replaced with items made of bio-degradable materials just makes sense.

I DON'T AGREE with fining people for using these items (that's just another example of "big brother/nanny state" trying to control our lives...IMO), but I do see the logic of replacing some items with non-plastic alternatives.

Plastic straws, plastic bags, styrofoam cups (and other one time use & then throw away items) can easily be replaced with bio-degradable paper products that are made from a renewable resource.

Just my opinion.

Many beach areas in Florida have "banned" plastic straws

Any plastic packaging is extremely harmful to wildlife.
Thousands of sea turtles, birds are killed by slow death do to plastic.

People are pigs.

This is not the USA but it is the same all over the World.

Maybe now that San Francisco banned straws they’ll ban shooting up heroin in front of police stations and elementary schools, throwing the needles on the ground, and taking dumps on city sidewalks. Hey. Aren’t syringes made of plastic?

Paper straws used to be the norm. Then plastic came along and saved the trees from becoming paper.

You just can't win.

Can they make straws out of the stalks and stems of those weeds so prevalent now on the left coast? Nothing goes to waste, win-win.

Why can't the plastic in straws be recycled like all other plastic? Perhaps we should focus on the litterers instead of the litter itself. Choosing to fight straws is easy, they don't fight back.

Or vote against you, if you put out ideas/pass laws they don’t like!

That's almost funny, and it would be except for one thing. I'd say the majority of people everywhere don't care whether they get to use a plastic straw when a paper one works just as well. It isn't as if plastic straws are some sort of rare commodity or collector's item to be treasured and used over and over, or brought out on special occasions like a finely tuned firearm.

The linked story in the OP is nothing more than click-bait for people who'll get all bent out of shape because they see it as frivolity or California craziness or feel like The Government is taking something away from them.

The story attempts to turn a sound ecological and economical idea into something silly and people are falling for it left and right.

It's a sad state of affairs because the longer the problem of ecological damage continues, the longer and more costly it will be to fix it. Or try to fix it.
