Default Considering moving to N. Carolina...

I'm considering a job related move to N. Carolina (Charlotte area), and am wondering what the climate is like there for concealed carry. Of course, I will check the states "carry laws" for myself, but that won't tell me what the "atmosphere" and general attitude about guns is in the state.

That's why I am asking you. Thanks guys and gals!

You might want to start here:

https://www.ncdoj.gov/getdoc/3234429...-gun-Laws.aspx

But. . .Charlotte seems to be, from 200 miles away, another planet.

Maybe some archive articles from the Charlotte Observer newspaper might be helpful.

Here, in the mountains at least, a lot of people pack regularly but here are a lot of places and circumstances where you cannot possess a firearm.

The few times I've encountered LEOs and advise them, as I am legally bound, that I am carrying a concealed handgun they have been pretty much ho hum about it.

And it's concealed handguns only, no SBSs or SBRs, or any other "weapon" as described by statute.

My thoughts regarding concealed carry in the Charlotte area are this: I don't believe anyone pays much attention to it.

I carry concealed every day in and around Charlotte. I don't much care if the gun prints or not; again, no one seems to notice. I don't make a big thing out of carrying concealed, I just do it.

I see people in stores who carry OWB with the gun partially showing. It might rate a glance or two, but I've never seen anyone get upset about it. Folks don't flee in terror.

Charlotte has the typical list of locations where carry of any kind is prohibited. Hospitals, doctors' offices, other medical facilities, government buildings...city and federal, blah blah blah.

Some private businesses prohibit carry. Patronize them or not...your choice.

You can conceal carry in bars and restaurants where alcohol is served, but you can't imbibe while carrying. The previously mentioned private business prohibition can apply to bars and restaurant ownership...it's the owners' decision to make.

North Carolina is also an open carry state. You see it occasionally in Charlotte, but if the carrier isn't law enforcement or security personnel, it's usually young men just showing off. Nuff said about that.

Lots of good LGSs around here. The city's saturated with pawn shops that sell guns...more than I could count.

Gun-related crime in and around Charlotte? I describe it as "rampant". Others may disagree. I don't care if they do or not.

If you have a specific question about Charlotte and/or the surrounding area, I'll try to answer. Otherwise, that's my synopsis.

There's North Carolina and then there's the Great State of Charlotte. About as far apart as two places can be. We've been trying to get South Carolina to annex it for years, but they are too smart.

I'm 30 miles or so N. of Charlotte. Concealed carry will be fine.

I might suggest you look for housing outside of Mecklenburg county though if you will be purchasing. Meck. was the 2nd highest taxed county in the state at one time. Might be the highest now.

Btw, you won't have to register any gun purchases like you do in Michigan!

I just moved to North Carolina and compared to NY where I moved from, it's the wild west regarding carry. I just completed my required concealed carry course, which I happen to endorse, and I'll apply for my CC license upon my return from a babysitting assignment in the Peoples' Republic of Californiastan.

NC is an open carry state but I would personally refrain from open carry in any urbanized area. I've only seen two open-carry guys since moving there and, thankfully, both were using holsters with retention.

Y'all come on down and see for yourself. BTW, it's easy to live in SC and work in that city, as an option.

Yes, but unless I am mistaken, you have to have a “permit to purchase” a handgun from
either a dealer or an individual, issued by the County Sheriff’s Office.

In Georgia, wives generally issue this kind of permit.

As a lifelong resident, shooter, retired LE, and Firearms Instructor, can tell you that NC has great diversity in how guns are viewed, depending on zip code.
Yes, NC is an Open Carry state.
There's places where very obvious OC will elicit barely a yawn.
There's places where it will create a panicked 911 call.
And everything in-between.

Places where you can set up your own range and enjoy a day of shooting. And places where doing so may bring several Sheriff's Department deputies coming to meet with you.

So - it varies greatly.
Charlotte is striving mightily to be the next Atlanta.
If I had to live in the area to work in Charlotte-Mecklenburg, I'd look at a nearby county such as Union Co., or even just over the line, such as Rock Hill, SC.

Best of luck.

You only need a permit if you don't have a concealed carry license. With a CCL there are no permits, background checks etc. Even from my wife!!!

Allthe above also relates to the High Point area. No one runs screaming and running and pulling heir hair if they see you open carrying. However you don't see a lot of it. But it just isn't the younger guys here, one of the Pharmacists at the drug store I use carries open all the time.

I'm about three hours west of Charlotte, in the mountains of Transylvania Co. Carrying under CCW as well as LEOSA is about as good as it gets.
The sheriff's office makes things a breeze.

The only time I ever open carry, (and very rarely at that), is late at night walking our dog along our unlit gravel forest roads during periods of high bear, coyote or feral dog activity.

Default A Little More Negative Information

I'm about 50 miles North of the "Queen City" which is ruled/goverened by POLITICIANS and the major highways are under construction leading into it (I-77 & I-85) and plum filled with exciting driving experiences if you venture out on them at High Usage Times. North Carloina is a fine state and you will be welcome to join us but do your homework before you choose your place of residence. The Gun Ownership Laws are or have been very friendly and we are hoping that will continue. Others have given you the finer points of our laws so I'll not bore you with repetitions. Crime is not completely under control as there is some type of gun violence occuring every day and has begun to spill over into many of the surrounding "Metrolina" neighborhoods.

I'll probably be moving/relocating to NC,not soon but eventually. Got a friend(from grade school thru high school) from up here in Ohio that is now there in the Salisbury area. He's been bugging/suggesting that I move down there to him. The many times I've visited him,the area seems nice,to the west towards Statesville and Mooresville. Carowinds would satisfy my need to ride rollercoasters, currently Cedar Point. Good gun shows in Charlotte,Concord, and Raleigh. Only thing lacking down there,as I'm a car nut,is the automotive scene. Up here in NE Ohio, you could go to a car show/cruise in everyday of the week and there are so many that you could do one everyday and not go to the same one during the season from May thru October. And I'd need to get used to the warmer atmosphere. And travelling/driving to Florida for their car events would be closer.

Oldman, don’t worry about

“Only thing lacking down there,as I'm a car nut,is the automotive scene”

When you feel an urge, just scamper over the hill to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. We have a car show a week, all summer long!

I'm 150 east of Shar-lutt, and it's plenty gun-friendly around here.

The Fort Bragg soldier who thoughtlessly open-carried his AR and some accessories to the local mall for a photo shoot did create a bit of a ruckus, though.

Personally, I don't think you'd like North Carolina, Protected One. Being from Michigan, you won't see the cold temps and snow that you're probably accustomed to. And the hurricanes here....oh the hurricanes....fear and trembling for Tar Heels from May through November or so. Definitely not the place for you.

Most of my family originally came from North Carolina. The ones still there tell me that there seems to be another invasion from the North in that area and that a lot of these folks bring their politics and Yankee attitudes with them. Now I don't care that you don't like collard greens, squirrel stew and things like that, but don't go messing with the way we do things down here once you get here. We've done all right without you and will do OK with you as long as you don't get pushy or rude. You'll see a Confederate monument in front of just about every court house in the South. Some folks call them second place trophies. They are not there to offend, nor is our beloved Confederate battle flag. It's all about Southern heritage. If ya'll don't mind, we would like to keep some of it. I'll be the first to admit that race relations weren't that great in the past, but we have more elected black officials down here than ya'll do up North simply because we vote for the best candidate. We've all got our problems with folks misbehaving but I think we have fewer of them down here than ya'll have up there or out on the left coast. I treat folks like they treat me, I don't care who they are. What I'm saying is if you come down and somebody is rude to you, look at yourself first. Most of us aren't as dumb as a lot of our Northern brothers and sisters think we are. Hollywood and the media have mistakenly portrayed such. Ya'll come on down. We'll be nice to you if you're nice to us. I'm just glad that most of ya'll haven't found out how cheap it is to live here in Mississippi even though a lot of retirees have.
