Our 18 year old grand daughter was supposed to enter college next week.

She was a top honor student in high school with a 4.0+ GPA.

Planned to be a teacher.

She was admitted to a top college. And given a big scholarship.

But a week before HS graduation she suffered some kind of mental breakdown.

No one knows the cause or solution.

She can barely talk. Can't write. Does not respond when you talk to her.

I don't know what God has planned for her -- perhaps nothing.

Pray for her.

Very sad.

I can't imagine the agony that's descended on your family, but I'm in tears at the thought.

I'll keep her in my thoughts and prayers.

Will be praying.

Very sad, and I am sure you are doing all that you can for her. Hopefully this is a temporary setback and nothing more. There is a lot of pressure on the kids of today, both by their peers, and themselves. A 4.0 GPA while admirable is very stressful. I do hope that it is nothing more than a temporary psychotic break. I wish you and your family the very best of news and a quick recovery for what seems to be an amazing young woman

A former co-worker’s son developed such an issue about ten years ago. It happened every summer for about three years. No explanation for his depression and withdrawal from society. Then it stopped and never came back.

Two things occurred at that time. The young man’s girlfriend sold her horse and my co-worker sold his cabin cruiser. The young man spent a lot of time on the boat and at the stable. Looking back, they believe he was in contact with toxic molds from either or both places.

Look into her surroundings.

More prayers here. From what I understand, things like this are likely to work out - stay positive and remember that as the grandfather, you're most likely to be able to keep everyone focused on the long view, which is probably the most reassuring one to have. God bless all of you who are having to deal with this scary experience.

My daughter had a breakdown going into 10th grade . All started with losing a spot on the dance team at school . Began not eating and this led to an eating disorder . Home schooled for a year , then to a small private school . She is now set to graduate college next year . Good psychiatrist , life coach , made the change in her . I will never forget when we were taking her to a treatment center . She was so week , I had to carry her up to our motel room in my arms . I have tears in my eyes writing this . All I can say is it can get better , but it could be a long road . My prayers are with you !

Being a huge success in the high school then realizing that you effectively have to start again in college has to be extremely stressful. Unfortunately it sounds like your granddaughter has folded under the weight of her own expectations, or maybe those of others. I wish her a speedy recovery.

All psychiatrists/counselors are NOT equal. I went through several until I found one where we could both relate to each other. Then progress was good.

...and pulling for her recovery. Taking time to get straight is the important thing. Get out of the rat race for a bit.

My sis had ALL of the work done to finish her PhD. Her mentor begged her to just write it up, she'd get all the help she needed. Forget it, she's out of business, burned out. That was a long time ago. She's created her own college chemistry class in the high school she teaches in and she's happier than she's ever been in her life.

I 'survived' a health breakdown and a subsequent mental breakdown I had to go on disabiility. Big adjustments. But SOME good did come out of it. I was able to spend time at home when our boy was growing up, now I"m helping him with his business now and I'M happy as a clam too.

So there is hope, but it may need a change of plans.

My daughter had a break down when she joined the high school soft ball team. She had looked forward to playing softball there for years. She went from straight A's to D's and F's. She slept in her room whenever she could no matter what time of day and withdrew from her friends. She stopped caring, she was bullied viciously at softball practice and games because she was good - she had the highest batting average in her league several times and did everything well but pitch. Her mother was at every game through grade school and junior high and I went to those that I could. The high school team had mostly poor players that would be at home in the LPGA. The coaches did not care. They still have not won a game. We had to take her out of school for a few months to recalibrate. She slowly re-emerged and got back to a B student and doing things with her friends. Sadly, I doubt she will play softball again. After a life time of encouragement and success, she feared that she had now some how failed and let us down when not accepted on the team. It took incredibly long to set her right again. I am not qualified to analyze anyone, but I will bet there is fear of failure in there somewhere that can be overcome with time, patience and love. Maybe she needs a year or two off and some loving fun with family. Good luck.
