Default Hot 300SL

This heist would make a good movie:

Rare Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing Stolen From Nurburgring Hotel | Carscoops

He should've had a locator device on the car. On the other hand, today's sophisticated high-end car thieves probably have scanners to find the device.

That classic was not taken for a joy ride. Best bet it will never be seen again.

One of the legendary cars of my youth. There is a story, perhaps apocryphal, about a local guy of German extraction named Holzer, who had a Mercedes repair facility in town.

Story has it he was running his 300SL down US12 near Black River Falls when a Highway Patrol aircraft timed him at 120 mph. A trooper at the side of the road waved him down.

“Do you know how fast you were going?
“Hundert ant tventy.”
“Do you know what the speed limit is?”
“Reasonable and proper.” (This was in the late fifties, in the days of prima facie speed laws.)
“Do you think 120 is reasonable and proper?”
“Vell, I stopp vere you vanted me.”

History does not record whether a citation issued.

Good grief. The article says the most likely fate of the $2M car is that it will be sold for parts.

(Also says $284K reward is being offered for its whereabouts, so keep your eyes peeled!)

My doctor from age 10 to age 40 had one, and his grandson who inherited it still has it stored away. I do the Dr. had been clocked in excess of 120 mph one time in it. I wish he would get it out and run it once in awhile, I don't think it has been on the street in 20 years.

Default Missed Out

I was home on leave in Cleveland in 1964. On a used car lot sat a nice silver (what else?) 300SL Gullwing for $6K. I looked at it but didn't drive it. Had the fitted luggage, too. Had I only known................
